The Design of Pumpjets for Hydrodynamic Propulsion
A procedure for use in the design of a wake adapted pumpjet mounted on the aft end of a body of revolution is presented. To this end, a pumpjet is designed for the Akron airship. The propulsor mass flow is selected to minimize kinetic energy losses through the duct and in the discharge jet. The shaft speed and disk size are selected to satisfy specified limits of cavitation performance and to provide acceptable blade loading. The streamtubes which pass through a propulsor mounted on a tapered afterbody follow essentially conical surfaces. A method is provided for defining these surfaces as a function of shroud geometry, rotor head distribution, and the energy distribution of the ingested mass flow. The three-dimensional effects to which the conical flow subjects the cylindrical blade design sections are described and a technique is presented which permits incorporation of these effects in the blade design procedure
Carbon Monoxide in type II supernovae
Infrared spectra of two type II supernovae 6 months after explosion are
presented. The spectra exhibit a strong similarity to the observations of SN
1987A and other type II SNe at comparable epochs. The continuum can be fitted
with a cool black body and the hydrogen lines have emissivities that are
approximately those of a Case B recombination spectrum. The data extend far
enough into the thermal region to detect emission by the first overtone of
carbon monoxide. The molecular emission is modeled and compared with that in
the spectra of SN 1987A. It is found that the flux in the CO first overtone is
comparable to that found in SN 1987A. We argue that Carbon Monoxide forms in

CULTURAL CAPITAL AND SCHOOL CHOICE PARTICIPATION: WHO CHOOSES WHAT? EVIDENCE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF 2009
This study examines the role of parental cultural capital as it pertains to whether a student attends a chosen school and whether the quality of the school a student attends is a function of cultural capital. Three theory-based factors representing cultural capital and three factors that represent facets of school quality were created using principal components analysis. Logistic regression was used to determine that cultural capital does play a role in whether a student attends a chosen school. In fact, one aspect of cultural capital, institutional engagement, is the strongest predictor of whether a student attends a chosen school. Linear regression models shed light on the role that different forms of cultural capital and choosing may play in the quality of school that the student attends. While the results are complex, I am able to conclude that cultural capital and choosing do play a role in the quality of school that a student attends, but community and school district characteristics, as well as parental socioeconomic status may play a stronger role. Models control for student and school district characteristics and school clustering effects. Suggestions for future research and implications for policy are discussed.Urban Educatio
Search for Free Decay of Negative Pions in Water and Light Materials
We report on a search for the free decay component of pi- stopped in water
and light materials. A non-zero value of this would be an indication of
anomalous nu_e contamination to the nu_e and nu_mu_bar production at
stopped-pion neutrino facilities. No free decay component of pi- was observed
in water, Beryllium, and Aluminum, for which upper limits were established at
8.2E-4, 3.2E-3, and 7.7E-3, respectively

This interview is one of series conducted concerning the Oral History of Appalachia. At the time of the interview, Mr. Gearhart was a County Attorney for Boyd County, Kentucky. The interview begins with an autobiographical discussion, including life in Floyd County during the Great Depression and early school. Infection and venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing colorectal surgery: what is the relationship?
BACKGROUND: There is evidence demonstrating an association between infection and venous thromboembolism. We recently identified this association in the postoperative setting; however, the temporal relationship between infection and venous thromboembolism is not well defined
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the temporal relationship between venous thromboembolism and postoperative infectious complications in patients undergoing colorectal surgery.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed using data for patients undergoing colorectal surgery in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project 2010 database.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measures were the rate and timing of venous thromboembolism and postoperative infection among patients undergoing colorectal surgery during 30 postoperative days.
RESULTS: Of 39,831 patients who underwent colorectal surgery, the overall rate of venous thromboembolism was 2.4% (n = 948); 729 (1.8%) patients were diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, and 307 (0.77%) patients were diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. Eighty-eight (0.22%) patients were reported as developing both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Following colorectal surgery, the development of a urinary tract infection, pneumonia, organ space surgical site infection, or deep surgical site infection was associated with a significantly increased risk for venous thromboembolism. The majority (52%-85%) of venous thromboembolisms in this population occurred the same day or a median of 3.5 to 8 days following the diagnosis of infection. The approximate relative risk for developing any venous thromboembolism increased each day following the development of each type of infection (range, 0.40%-1.0%) in comparison with patients not developing an infection.
LIMITATIONS: We are unable to account for differences in data collection, prophylaxis, and venous thromboembolism surveillance between hospitals in the database. Additionally, there is limited patient follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings of a temporal association between infection and venous thromboembolism suggest a potential early indicator for using certain postoperative infectious complications as clinical warning signs that a patient is more likely to develop venous thromboembolism. Further studies into best practices for prevention are warranted
Rates of lobar atrophy in asymptomatic MAPT mutation carriers.
IntroductionThe aim of this study was to investigate the rates of lobar atrophy in the asymptomatic microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) mutation carriers.MethodsMAPT mutation carriers (n = 14; 10 asymptomatic, 4 converters from asymptomatic to symptomatic) and noncarriers (n = 13) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging and were followed annually with a median of 9.2 years. Longitudinal changes in lobar atrophy were analyzed using the tensor-based morphometry with symmetric normalization algorithm.ResultsThe rate of temporal lobe atrophy in asymptomatic MAPT mutation carriers was faster than that in noncarriers. Although the greatest rate of atrophy was observed in the temporal lobe in converters, they also had increased atrophy rates in the frontal and parietal lobes compared to noncarriers.DiscussionAccelerated decline in temporal lobe volume occurs in asymptomatic MAPT mutation carriers followed by the frontal and parietal lobe in those who have become symptomatic. The findings have implications for monitoring the progression of neurodegeneration during clinical trials in asymptomatic MAPT mutation carriers
Analysis of exchange terms in a projected ERPA Theory applied to the quasi-elastic (e,e') reaction
A systematic study of the influence of exchange terms in the longitudinal and
transverse nuclear response to quasi-elastic (e,e') reactions is presented. The
study is performed within the framework of the extended random phase
approximation (ERPA), which in conjuction with a projection method permits a
separation of various contributions tied to different physical processes. The
calculations are performed in nuclear matter up to second order in the residual
interaction for which we take a (pi+rho)-model with the addition of the
Landau-Migdal g'-parameter. Exchange terms are found to be important only for
