    Rotor balancing using high breakdown-point and bounded-influence estimators

    In industrial field, one of the most important practical problems of rotating machinery concerns rotor balancing. Many different methods are used for rotor balancing. Traditional influence coefficient method is often employed along with weighted least squares in order to reduce vibration amplitude, typically at selected rotating speeds like critical or operating ones. Usually the selection of the weights of the least-squares algorithm is manually made by a skilled operator that can decide in which speed range the vibration reduction is more effective. Several methods have been proposed in order to avoid operator's arbitrariness and an automatic procedure based on robust regression is introduced in this paper. In particular, the analysis is focused on high breakdown-point and bounded-influence estimators. Theoretical aspects and properties of these methods are investigated. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed balancing procedure are shown by means of an experimental case using a test-rig

    Analysis of the 2007/8 Defra Farm Business Survey Energy Module

    Key points This study has delivered an invaluable baseline estimate of energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on commercial farms in England. Energy use and GHG emissions associated with particular commodities were quantified and results broadly agreed with those derived by Life Cycle Assessment, but with much scatter in the environmental performance of farms.Direct energy use on farms was generally less that indirect (embedded) energy use, except for horticulture, which is dominated by heating fuel use. In contrast, most GHG emissions are incurred on farms, rather than as embedded emissions.Scatter in both environmental and economic performance underlies the somewhat disappointing finding of no clear positive link between farm financial performance and energy use or GHG emissions. However, the mere existence of these ranges shows that there is scope for improvement in both financial and environmental performance and that there is no apparent barrier for both to be achievable in harmony. The recording of such farm-level energy data is essential for the future, as it should enable improvements to be made in efficiency of energy use. The improved UK agricultural GHG inventory will depend on high quality energy data on agricultural activities. This study will be invaluable in identifying the level of detail needed. Future data requirements include: contractor work rates and fuel use per unit area and per unit time, fertiliser and pesticide use by brand name, enhanced output data, especially animal live weights, and horticultural produce recorded by weight rather than by value

    On model updating of turbo-generator set

    Models can be applied for simulating dynamical behavior of rotating machinery or specific faulty conditions. Efficient model updating techniques could be very useful for increasing model accuracy. Model updating of rotor systems is significantly different with respect to the well-known model updating techniques and related modal analyses performed in the field of vibrating structures. This paper investigates both the difficulties and the conditions of rotor vibrations measurement tests as well as the approximations introduced in the rotor model. Some experimental cases of turbo-generator machines indicate the difficulties and problems in the identification of eigen-frequencies and damping modal parameter. In the second part of the paper uncertainties and non-linearity of the model are investigated. An example of updating of some shaft and bearing parameters by means of an evolutionary algorithm, for fitting the natural frequencies of a shaft line, is presented and discussed. Model updating techniques of bearing coefficients are also discussed and a procedure is proposed to avoid misleading results of widely-used model updating approaches

    Two-Dimensional Laser-Doppler Velocimetry in Turbulent Flows

    Localized measurement of the velocity of flow In fluids may be accomplished by detecting the Doppler shift In frequency from coherent, monochromatic light scattered from micrometer sized contaminant particles within the flow. The versatility of applications of this technique, first used several years ago, has been expanded by recent research. The basic geometry of measurement, in which the scattered energy is recombined with light energy at the original frequency on the face of the photocathode of a photomultiplier tube, can be rearranged in many alternative configurations to meet the needs of the experimenter. By using a single laser, additional arrangements are possible for obtaining two- or three-dimensional measurements of velocity components. Several different velocimeters are described for making two-dimensional flow measurements, including both backscatter and forward scatter systems. Effects of flow system geometries on capabilities for measuring specific components are investigated. Effects of laser beam polarization are discussed and conclusions reached on methods of optimizing signal strength in each of two orthogonal measurement systems. Results of the application of a two-dimensional measurement system used for obtaining velocity profiles in turbulent flow in a smooth walled four-inch diameter pipe are presented. Operating at a Reynolds number of about 1.1 x 106, relative turbulent intensities were measured in the axial direction and normal to that direction. Standard techniques were utilized. A second readout system was employed to make a measurement of this parameter without the requirement of adding scattering centers to the flow

    The effect of N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate and N-acetyl-aspartate on white matter oligodendrocytes

    Elevations of the levels of N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate (NAAG) and N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) are associated with myelin loss in the leucodystrophies Canavan's disease and Pelizaeus-Merzbacher-like disease. NAAG and NAA can activate and antagonize neuronal N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, and also act on group II metabotropic glutamate receptors. Oligodendrocytes and their precursors have recently been shown to express NMDA receptors, and activation of these receptors in ischaemia leads to the death of oligodendrocyte precursors and the loss of myelin. This raises the possibility that the failure to develop myelin, or demyelination, occurring in the leucodystrophies could reflect an action of NAAG or NAA on oligodendrocyte NMDA receptors. However, since the putative subunit composition of NMDA receptors on oligodendrocytes differs from that of neuronal NMDA receptors, the effects of NAAG and NAA on them are unknown. We show that NAAG, but not NAA, evokes an inward membrane current in cerebellar white matter oligodendrocytes, which is reduced by NMDA receptor block (but not by block of metabotropic glutamate receptors). The size of the current evoked by NAAG, relative to that evoked by NMDA, was much smaller in oligodendrocytes than in neurons, and NAAG induced a rise in [Ca^{2+}]i in neurons but not in oligodendrocytes. These differences in the effect of NAAG on oligodendrocytes and neurons may reflect the aforementioned difference in receptor subunit composition. In addition, as a major part of the response in oligodendrocytes was blocked by tetrodotoxin (TTX), much of the NAAG-evoked current in oligodendrocytes is a secondary consequence of activating neuronal NMDA receptors. Six hours exposure to 1 mM NAAG did not lead to the death of cells in the white matter. We conclude that an action of NAAG on oligodendrocyte NMDA receptors is unlikely to be a major contributor to white matter damage in the leucodystrophies

    Exceptionally Preserved Cambrian Trilobite Digestive System Revealed in 3D by Synchrotron-Radiation X-Ray Tomographic Microscopy

    The Cambrian ‘Orsten’ fauna comprises exceptionally preserved and phosphatised microscopic arthropods. The external morphology of these fossils is well known, but their internal soft-tissue anatomy has remained virtually unknown. Here, we report the first non-biomineralised tissues from a juvenile polymerid trilobite, represented by digestive structures, glands, and connective strands harboured in a hypostome from the Swedish ‘Orsten’ fauna. Synchrotron-radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy enabled three-dimensional internal recordings at sub-micrometre resolution. The specimen provides the first unambiguous evidence for a J-shaped anterior gut and the presence of a crop with a constricted alimentary tract in the Trilobita. Moreover, the gut is Y-shaped in cross section, probably due to a collapsed lumen of that shape, another feature which has not previously been observed in trilobites. The combination of anatomical features suggests that the trilobite hypostome is functionally analogous to the labrum of euarthropods and that it was a sophisticated element closely integrated with the digestive system. This study also briefly addresses the preservational bias of the ‘Orsten’ fauna, particularly the near-absence of polymerid trilobites, and the taphonomy of the soft-tissue-harbouring hypostome

    Use of a novel dataset to explore spatial and social variations in car type, size, usage and emissions

The 'MOT' vehicle inspection test record dataset recently released by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) provides the ability to estimate annual mileage figures for every individual light duty vehicle greater than 3 years old within Great Britain. Vehicle age, engine size and fuel type are also provided in the dataset and these allow further estimates to be made of fuel consumption, energy use, and per vehicle emissions of both air pollutants and greenhouse gases. The use of this data permits the adoption of a new vehicle-centred approach to assessing emissions and energy use in comparison to previous road-flow and national fuel consumption based approaches. The dataset also allows a spatial attribution of each vehicle to a postcode area, through the reported location of relevant vehicle testing stations. Consequently, this new vehicle data can be linked with socio-demographic data in order to determine the potential characteristics of vehicle owners.This paper provides a broad overview of the types of analyses that are made possible by these data, with a particular focus on distance driven and pollutant emissions. The intention is to demonstrate the very broad potential for this data, and to highlight where more focused analysis could be useful. The findings from the work have important implications for understanding the distributional impacts of transport related policies and targeting messaging and interventions for the reduction of car use

    Cannabidiol Affects Extracellular Vesicle Release, miR21 and miR126, and Reduces Prohibitin Protein in Glioblastoma Multiforme Cells

    Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive form of primary malignant brain tumor in adults, with poor prognosis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are key-mediators for cellular communication through transfer of proteins and genetic material. Cancers, such as GBM, use EV release for drug-efflux, pro-oncogenic signaling, invasion and immunosuppression; thus the modulation of EV release and cargo is of considerable clinical relevance. As EV-inhibitors have been shown to increase sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy, and we recently showed that cannabidiol (CBD) is such an EV-modulator, we investigated whether CBD affects EV profile in GBM cells in the presence and absence of temozolomide (TMZ). Compared to controls, CBD-treated cells released EVs containing lower levels of pro-oncogenic miR21 and increased levels of anti-oncogenic miR126; these effects were greater than with TMZ alone. In addition, prohibitin (PHB), a multifunctional protein with mitochondrial protective properties and chemoresistant functions, was reduced in GBM cells following 1 h CBD treatment. This data suggests that CBD may, via modulation of EVs and PHB, act as an adjunct to enhance treatment efficacy in GBM, supporting evidence for efficacy of cannabinoids in GBM
