    Code Needs Comments: Enhancing Code LLMs with Comment Augmentation

    The programming skill is one crucial ability for Large Language Models (LLMs), necessitating a deep understanding of programming languages (PLs) and their correlation with natural languages (NLs). We examine the impact of pre-training data on code-focused LLMs' performance by assessing the comment density as a measure of PL-NL alignment. Given the scarcity of code-comment aligned data in pre-training corpora, we introduce a novel data augmentation method that generates comments for existing code, coupled with a data filtering strategy that filters out code data poorly correlated with natural language. We conducted experiments on three code-focused LLMs and observed consistent improvements in performance on two widely-used programming skill benchmarks. Notably, the model trained on the augmented data outperformed both the model used for generating comments and the model further trained on the data without augmentation

    Do obese patients with type A aortic dissection benefit from total arch repair through a partial upper sternotomy?

    BackgroundMinimal research has been performed regarding total arch replacement through partial upper sternotomy in patients with acute type A aortic dissection who are obese, and the safety and feasibility of this procedure need to be further investigated. The present study investigated the potential clinical advantages of using a partial upper sternotomy versus a conventional full sternotomy for total arch replacement in patients who were obese.MethodsThis was a retrospective study. From January 2017 to January 2020, a total of 65 acute type A aortic dissection patients who were obese underwent total arch replacement with triple-branched stent graft. Among them, 35 patients underwent traditional full sternotomy, and 30 patients underwent partial upper sternotomy. The perioperative clinical data and postoperative follow-up results of the two groups were collected, and the feasibility and clinical effect of partial upper sternotomy in total arch replacement were summarized.ResultsThe in-hospital mortality rates of the two groups were similar. The total operative time, cardiopulmonary bypass, aortic cross-clamp, cerebral perfusion, and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest times were also similar in both groups. The thoracic drainage and postoperative red blood cell transfusion volumes in the partial upper sternotomy group were significantly lower than those in the full sternotomy group. Mechanical ventilation time was shorter in the partial upper sternotomy group than that in the full sternotomy group. Additionally, the incidences of pulmonary infection, hypoxemia, and sternal diaphoresis were lower in the partial upper sternotomy group than those in the full sternotomy group.ConclusionThis study showed that total arch replacement surgery through a partial upper sternotomy in patients with acute type A aortic dissection who are obese is safe, effective, and superior to full sternotomy in terms of blood loss, postoperative blood transfusion, and respiratory complications

    Enhanced room-temperature Na+ ionic conductivity in Na4.92_{4.92}Y0.92_{0.92}Zr0.08_{0.08}Si4_{4}O12_{12}

    Developing cost-effective and reliable solid-state sodium batteries with superior performance is crucial for stationary energy storage. A key component in facilitating their application is a solid-state electrolyte with high conductivity and stability. Herein, we employed aliovalent cation substitution to enhance ionic conductivity while preserving the crystal structure. Optimized substitution of Y3+ with Zr4+ in Na5YSi4O12 introduced Na+ ​ion vacancies, resulting in high bulk and total conductivities of up to 6.5 and 3.3 ​mS ​cm−1, respectively, at room temperature with the composition Na4.92Y0.92Zr0.08Si4O12 (NYZS). NYZS shows exceptional electrochemical stability (up to 10 ​V vs. Na+/Na), favorable interfacial compatibility with Na, and an excellent critical current density of 2.4 ​mA ​cm−2. The enhanced conductivity of Na+ ​ions in NYZS was elucidated using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and theoretical simulations, revealing two migration routes facilitated by the synergistic effect of increased Na+ ​ion vacancies and improved chemical environment due to Zr4+ substitution. NYZS extends the list of suitable solid-state electrolytes and enables the facile synthesis of stable, low-cost Na+ ion silicate electrolytes

    Functional building blocks for scalable multipartite entanglement in optical lattices

    Featuring excellent coherence and operated parallelly, ultracold atoms in optical lattices form a competitive candidate for quantum computation. For this, a massive number of parallel entangled atom pairs have been realized in superlattices. However, the more formidable challenge is to scale-up and detect multipartite entanglement due to the lack of manipulations over local atomic spins in retro-reflected bichromatic superlattices. Here we developed a new architecture based on a cross-angle spin-dependent superlattice for implementing layers of quantum gates over moderately-separated atoms incorporated with a quantum gas microscope for single-atom manipulation. We created and verified functional building blocks for scalable multipartite entanglement by connecting Bell pairs to one-dimensional 10-atom chains and two-dimensional plaquettes of 2×42\times4 atoms.     Evidence of cure for extranodal nasal-type natural killer/T-cell lymphoma with current treatment: an analysis of the CLCG database

    Survival from extranodal nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) has substantially improved over the last decade. However, there is little consensus as to whether a population of patients with ENKTCL can be considered “cured” of the disease. We aimed to evaluate the statistical “cure” of ENKTCL in the modern treatment era. This retrospective multicentric study reviewed the clinical data of 1,955 patients with ENKTCL treated with non-anthracycline-based chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in the China Lymphoma Collaborative Group multicenter database between 2008 and 2016. A non-mixture cure model with incorporation of background mortality was fitted to estimate cure fractions, median survival times and cure time points. The relative survival curves attained plateau for the entire cohort and most subsets, indicating that the notion of cure was robust. The overall cure fraction was 71.9%. The median survival was 1.1 years in uncured patients. The cure time was 4.5 years, indicating that beyond this time, mortality in ENKTCL patients was statistically equivalent to that in the general population. Cure probability was associated with B symptoms, stage, performance status, lactate dehydrogenase, primary tumor invasion, and primary upper aerodigestive tract site. Elderly patients (>60 years) had a similar cure fraction to that of younger patients. The 5-year overall survival rate correlated well with the cure fraction across risk-stratified groups. Thus, statistical cure is possible in ENKTCL patients receiving current treatment strategies. Overall probability of cure is favorable, though it is affected by the presence of risk factors. These findings have a high potential impact on clinical practice and patients’ perspective

    Cross-oncopanel study reveals high sensitivity and accuracy with overall analytical performance depending on genomic regions

    BackgroundTargeted sequencing using oncopanels requires comprehensive assessments of accuracy and detection sensitivity to ensure analytical validity. By employing reference materials characterized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-led SEquence Quality Control project phase2 (SEQC2) effort, we perform a cross-platform multi-lab evaluation of eight Pan-Cancer panels to assess best practices for oncopanel sequencing.ResultsAll panels demonstrate high sensitivity across targeted high-confidence coding regions and variant types for the variants previously verified to have variant allele frequency (VAF) in the 5-20% range. Sensitivity is reduced by utilizing VAF thresholds due to inherent variability in VAF measurements. Enforcing a VAF threshold for reporting has a positive impact on reducing false positive calls. Importantly, the false positive rate is found to be significantly higher outside the high-confidence coding regions, resulting in lower reproducibility. Thus, region restriction and VAF thresholds lead to low relative technical variability in estimating promising biomarkers and tumor mutational burden.ConclusionThis comprehensive study provides actionable guidelines for oncopanel sequencing and clear evidence that supports a simplified approach to assess the analytical performance of oncopanels. It will facilitate the rapid implementation, validation, and quality control of oncopanels in clinical use.Peer reviewe

    Nanoarchitectured Array Electrodes for Rechargeable Lithium- and Sodium-Ion Batteries

    Rechargeable ion batteries have contributed immensely to shaping the modern world and been seriously considered for the efficient storage and utilization of intermittent renewable energies. To fulfill their potential in the future market, superior battery performance of high capacity, great rate capability, and long lifespan is undoubtedly required. In the past decade, along with discovering new electrode materials, the focus has been shifting more and more toward rational electrode designs because the performance is intimately connected to the electrode architectures, particularly their designs at the nanoscale that can alleviate the reliance on the materials' intrinsic nature. The utilization of nanoarchitectured arrays in the design of electrodes has been proven to significantly improve the battery performance. A comprehensive summary of the structural features and fabrications of the nanoarchitectured array electrodes is provided, and some of the latest achievements in the area of both lithium‐ and sodium‐ion batteries are highlighted. Finally, future challenges and opportunities that would allow further development of such advanced electrode configuration are discussed

    A Quaternized Polysulfone Membrane for Zinc-Bromine Redox Flow Battery

    A quaternized polysulfone (QNPSU) composite membrane is fabricated for zinc-bromine redox flow battery. The structure of the membrane is examined by FT-IR spectra and SEM. The conductivity of the membrane is tested by electrochemical analyzer. After a zinc-bromine battery with this composite membrane is operated at different voltage while charging and at different current while discharging to examine the performance of the membrane, it is found that the discharge voltage was 0.9672 V and the power density was 6 mW/cm2 at a current of 0.1 A, which indicated that the novel composite membrane is a promising material for the flow battery

    Evaluation of the safety and efficacy of therapeutic bandage contact lenses on post-cataract surgery patients

    AIM: To evaluate the safety of therapeutic bandage contact lens for post-cataract surgery patients and to illustrate its efficacy on post-operative comfort and tear-film stability. METHODS: A total of 40 participants were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. Group one was instructed to wear bandage contact lenses for a week and use antibiotic eye drops for a month since the first day after surgery. Group two received sub-conjunctival injection of tobramycin and was asked to wear eye pads on the first day after surgery and then were instructed to use antibiotic eye drops as the first group did. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, slit-lamp microscope examination of tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein score (CFS), tear meniscus height (TMH) together with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and corneal topography were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: The subjective feeling (P=0.004), TBUT (P<0.001) and TMH (P=0.02) post-surgery had improved in patients who used bandage contact lenses compared with those who did not at 1wk post-surgery. Until three month postoperatively, the comfort degree (P=0.004) and TMH (P=0.01) of group two were still worse than group one. Moreover, TBUT (P<0.001) and CFS (P=0.004) of the group with eye pads got worse than the results before, whereas the group with bandage contact lenses recovered to normal. None of these patients had infections or other complications. CONCLUSION: Wearing therapeutic bandage contact lens after cataract surgery, compared with traditional eye-pads, is a safe method to improve tear-film stability and reduce post-operative discomfort without hindering corneal incision recovery
