Priests and heateachers 'doing theology: exploring insights from paired reflection to develop leadership priorites for vision and ethos in two Church of England primary schools
This thesis reports on a study undertaken in two Church of England primary schools, which engaged priests and headteachers in the practice of paired theological reflection. It employed an experiential methodology with two distinct strands; a research method based on the ‘Doing Theology Spiral’ (Green, 2009) and narrative theological inquiry, through which the author interpreted participants’ experiences. The resulting thesis contributes to the emerging knowledge and evidence base around church school leadership, proposing how theological reflection, rooted in the practical and everyday, might guide educational practice.
The study used ‘Ordinary Theology’ (Astley, 2002a, 2002b, 2013a, 2013b) as a conceptual framework, focusing on individuals’ stories and the interaction between Christian tradition, doctrine and the participants’ lived experience. Insights from Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and capital (Bourdieu, 1977) assisted in revealing individuals’ dispositions and examining social influences on participants and their interactions. Data analysis, underpinned by a system of coding, uncovered patterns and connections within individual narratives and experiences, with meaning derived through a process of narrative thematic analysis.
In this thesis, the author explores the issue that priests and headteachers will encounter questions relating to their own role and ministry whilst discerning how theology inspires vision, ethos and leadership in schools with a Christian foundation. The findings arising from the data inform considerations for designing a new approach for priests and church school leaders to engage in theological conversation as an ongoing learning event. The author, as Director of Education for an Anglican diocese, also proposes initiating a collaborative process with schools and parishes with the intention of developing and piloting this process of inquiry and reflection in their specific contexts.
The conclusion of the study is that as priests and headteachers draw deeper into the life of their shared community, the richness of experiences, insights and responses as they develop new situations from learning and doing theology together could be truly transformational
HFPK 334: An unusual Supernova Remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) radio-continuum and
XMM-Newton/Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) observations of the unusual
supernova remnant HFPK 334 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The remnant
follows a shell type morphology in the radio-continuum and has a size of
20~pc at the SMC distance. The X-ray morphology is similar, however, we
detect a prominent point source close to the center of the SNR exhibiting a
spectrum with a best fit powerlaw with a photon index of . This central point source is most likely a background object and cannot
be directly associated with the remnant. The high temperature, nonequilibrium
conditions in the diffuse region suggest that this gas has been recently
shocked and point toward a younger SNR with an age of years.
With an average radio spectral index of we find that an
equipartition magnetic field for the remnant is 90~G, a value
typical of younger SNRs in low-density environments. Also, we report detection
of scattered radio polarisation across the remnant at 20~cm, with a peak

EPOCHS VI: The Size and Shape Evolution of Galaxies since z ~ 8 with JWST Observations
We present the results of a size and structural analysis of 1395 galaxies at
with stellar masses
9.5 within the JWST Public CEERS field that overlaps with the HST CANDELS
EGS observations. We use GALFIT to fit single S\'ersic models to the rest-frame
optical profile of our galaxies, which is a mass-selected sample complete to
our redshift and mass limit. Our primary result is that at fixed rest-frame
wavelength and stellar mass, galaxies get progressively smaller, evolving as
up to . We discover that the vast
majority of massive galaxies at high redshifts have low S\'ersic indices, thus
do not contain steep, concentrated light profiles. Additionally, we explore the
evolution of the size-stellar mass relationship, finding a correlation such
that more massive systems are larger up to . This relationship breaks
down at , where we find that galaxies are of similar sizes, regardless
of their star formation rates and S\'ersic index, varying little with mass. We
show that galaxies are more compact at redder wavelengths, independent of sSFR
or stellar mass up to . We demonstrate the size evolution of galaxies
continues up to , showing that the process or causes for this
evolution is active at early times. We discuss these results in terms of ideas
behind galaxy formation and evolution at early epochs, such as their importance
in tracing processes driving size evolution, including minor mergers and AGN

A New Measurement of the 1S0 Neutron-Neutron Scattering Length using the Neutron-Proton Scattering Length as a Standard
The present paper reports high-accuracy cross-section data for the 2H(n,nnp)
reaction in the neutron-proton (np) and neutron-neutron (nn)
final-state-interaction (FSI) regions at an incident mean neutron energy of
13.0 MeV. These data were analyzed with rigorous three-nucleon calculations to
determine the 1S0 np and nn scattering lengths, a_np and a_nn. Our results are
a_nn = -18.7 +/- 0.6 fm and a_np = -23.5 +/- 0.8 fm. Since our value for a_np
obtained from neutron-deuteron (nd) breakup agrees with that from free np
scattering, we conclude that our investigation of the nn FSI done
simultaneously and under identical conditions gives the correct value for a_nn.
Our value for a_nn is in agreement with that obtained in pion-deuteron capture
measurements but disagrees with values obtained from earlier nd breakup

High-resolution observations of low-luminosity gigahertz-peaked spectrum and compact steep-spectrum sources

We present very long baseline interferometry observations of a faint and low-luminosity (L 1.4 GHz < 10 27 W Hz -1 ) gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) and compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sample. We select eight sources from deep radio observations that have radio spectra characteristic of a GPS or CSS source and an angular size of Φ <~ 2 arcsec, and detect six of them with the Australian Long Baseline Array. We determine their linear sizes, and model their radio spectra using synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) and free-free absorption (FFA) models. We derive statistical model ages, based on a fitted scaling relation, and spectral ages, based on the radio spectrum, which are generally consistent with the hypothesis that GPS and CSS sources are young and evolving. We resolve the morphology of one CSS source with a radio luminosity of 10 2 5WHz -1 , and find what appear to be two hotspots spanning 1.7 kpc. We find that our sources follow the turnover-linear size relation, and that both homogeneous SSA and an inhomogeneous FFA model can account for the spectra with observable turnovers. All but one of the FFA models do not require a spectral break to account for the radio spectrum, while all but one of the alternative SSA and power-law models do require a spectral break to account for the radio spectrum. We conclude that our low-luminosity sample is similar to brighter samples in terms of their spectral shape, turnover frequencies, linear sizes, and ages, but cannot test for a difference in morphology

We present the results of a size and structural analysis of 1395 galaxies at 0.5 ≤ z ≲ 8 with stellar masses log (M*/M⊙> 9.5 within the JWST Public CEERS field that overlaps with the HST CANDELS EGS observations. We use GALFIT to fit single Sérsic models to the rest-frame optical profile of our galaxies, which is a mass-selected sample complete to our redshift and mass limit. Our primary result is that at fixed rest-frame wavelength and stellar mass, galaxies get progressively smaller, evolving as ∼(1 + z)−0.71 ± 0.19 up to z ∼ 8. “Affimer” synthetic protein scaffolds block oxidized LDL binding to the LOX-1 scavenger receptor and inhibit ERK1/2 activation
In multicellular organisms, a variety of lipid-protein particles control the systemic flow of triacylglycerides, cholesterol, and fatty acids between cells in different tissues. The chemical modification by oxidation of these particles can trigger pathological responses, mediated by a group of membrane proteins termed scavenger receptors. The lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LOX-1) scavenger receptor binds to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) and mediates both signaling and trafficking outcomes. Here, we identified five synthetic proteins termed Affimers from a phage display library, each capable of binding recombinant LOX-1 extracellular (oxLDL-binding) domain with high specificity. These Affimers, based on a phytocystatin scaffold with loop regions of variable sequence, were able to bind to the plasma membrane of HEK293T cells exclusively when human LOX-1 was expressed. Binding and uptake of fluorescently labeled oxLDL by the LOX-1-expressing cell model was inhibited with subnanomolar potency by all 5 Affimers. ERK1/2 activation, stimulated by oxLDL binding to LOX-1, was also significantly inhibited (p < 0.01) by preincubation with LOX-1-specific Affimers, but these Affimers had no direct agonistic effect. Molecular modeling indicated that the LOX-1-specific Affimers bound predominantly via their variable loop regions to the surface of the LOX-1 lectin-like domain that contains a distinctive arrangement of arginine residues previously implicated in oxLDL binding, involving interactions with both subunits of the native, stable scavenger receptor homodimer. These data provide a new class of synthetic tools to probe and potentially modulate the oxLDL/LOX-1 interaction that plays an important role in vascular disease
Attenuation of Vaccinia Tian Tan Strain by Removal of Viral TC7L-TK2L and TA35R Genes
Vaccinia Tian Tan (VTT) was attenuated by deletion of the TC7L-TK2L and TA35R genes to generate MVTT3. The mutant was generated by replacing the open reading frames by a gene encoding enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) flanked by loxP sites. Viruses expressing EGFP were then screened for and purified by serial plaque formation. In a second step the marker EGFP gene was removed by transfecting cells with a plasmid encoding cre recombinase and selecting for viruses that had lost the EGFP phenotype. The MVTT3 mutant was shown to be avirulent and immunogenic. These results support the conclusion that TC7L-TK2L and TA35R deletion mutants can be used as safe viral vectors or as platform for vaccines
Polycomb Group Protein Bmi1 Is Required for Growth of RAF Driven Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer
Background: We have previously described a RAF oncogene driven transgenic mouse model for non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here we examine whether tumor initiation and growth requires the stem cell self-renewal factor Bmi1. Principal Findings: In order to evaluate Bmi1 function in NSCLC two founder lines that differ in incidence and latency of tumor formation were compared. Ablation of Bmi1 expression in both lines had a dramatically decreased tumor growth. As the line with shorter latency matched the life span of Bmi1 knock out mice, these mice were chosen for further study. The absence of Bmi1 did not decrease the number of tumor initiation in these mice as only the size and not the number of tumors decreased. Reduction in tumor growth resulted from an increase in cell death and decrease in cell cycle progression that corresponded with up-regulation of the p16 INK4a and p19 ARF. Significance: The data identifies Bmi1 as an important factor for expansion but not initiation of RAF driven NSCLC
