On Automorphisms and Focal Subgroups of Blocks
Given a p-block B of a finite group with defect group P and fusion system on P, we show that the rank of the group is invariant under stable equivalences of Morita type. The main ingredients are the construction, due to Broué and Puig, a theorem of Weiss on linear source modules, arguments of Hertweck and Kimmerle applying Weiss’ theorem to blocks, and connections with integrable derivations in the Hochschild cohomology of block algebras
Measuring and explaining farm inefficiency in a panel data set of mixed farms
This paper aims to estimate a translog stochastic frontier production function in the analysis of a panel of 150 mixed Catalan farms in the period 1989-1993, in order to attempt to measure and explain variation in technical inefficiency scores with a one-stage approach. The model uses gross value added as the output aggregate measure. Total employment, fixed capital, current assets, specific costs and overhead costs are introduced into the model as inputs. Stochastic frontier estimates are compared with those obtained using a linear programming method using a two-stage approach. The specification of the translog stochastic frontier model appears as an appropriate representation of the data, technical change was rejected and the technical inefficiency effects were statistically significant. The mean technical efficiency in the period analyzed was estimated to be 64.0%. Farm inefficiency levels were found significantly at 5% level and positively correlated with the number of economic size units.Technical efficiency, stochastic frontier approach, agricultural economics, frontier productions, farm efficiency
Cambio tecnológico y reconversión industrial
Technological Change and Industrial Reconvertion. This paper explores some of the short time effects of technological change on income and welfare when adjustment costs of the production level are not null. The model rests on two hypotheses: technological change involves the reduction of the production cost but demands the increase of the production scale, and the exit of factories from the market does not take place immediately after losses appear if this situation can be rationally considered as transitory. The model generates short time equilibria characterized by productive capacity surpluses and generalized loss and suggests that the factorie' s selection process depends on their capacity of financial resistance. These facts correspond with what is generally observed in industrial markets.
