    Quasiconvex Constrained Multicriteria Continuous Location Problems: Structure of Nondominated Solution Sets

    In this paper, we consider constrained multicriteria continuous location problems in two-dimensional spaces. In the literature, the continuous multicriteria location problem in two-dimensional spaces has received special attention in the last years, although only particular instances of convex functions have been considered. Our approach only requires the functions to be strictly quasiconvex and inf-compact. We obtain a geometrical description that provides a unified approach to handle multicriteria location models in two-dimensional spaces which has been implemented in MATHEMATIC

    Predictive model creation approach using layered subsystems quantified data collection from LTE L2 software system

    Abstract. The road-map to a continuous and efficient complex software system’s improvement process has multiple stages and many interrelated on-going transformations, these being direct responses to its always evolving environment. The system’s scalability on this on-going transformations depends, to a great extent, on the prediction of resources consumption, and systematic emergent properties, thus implying, as the systems grow bigger in size and complexity, its predictability decreases in accuracy. A predictive model is used to address the inherent complexity growth and be able to increase the predictability of a complex system’s performance. The model creation processes are driven by the recollection of quantified data from different layers of the Long-term Evolution (LTE) Data-layer (L2) software system. The creation of such a model is possible due to the multiple system analysis tools Nokia has already implemented, allowing a multiple-layers data gathering flow. The process starts by first, stating the system layers differences, second, the use of a layered benchmark approach for the data collection at different levels, third, the design of a process flow organizing the data transformations from recollection, filtering, pre-processing and visualization, and forth, As a proof of concept, different Performance Measurements (PM) predictive models, trained by the collected pre-processed data, are compared. The thesis contains, in parallel to the model creation processes, the exploration, and comparison of various data visualization techniques that addresses the non-trivial graphical representation of the in-between subsystem’s data relations. Finally, the current results of the model process creation process are presented and discussed. The models were able to explain 54% and 67% of the variance in the two test configurations used in the instantiation of the model creation process proposed in this thesis

    THE HEROIDES IN ALFONSO X\u27S GENERAL ESTORIA: TRANSLATION, ADAPTATION, USE, AND INTERPRETATION OF A CLASSICAL WORK IN A THIRTEENTH-CENTURY IBERIAN HISTORY OF THE WORLD

    My dissertation analyzes the role of Ovid’s Heroides in Alfonso X’s General Estoria, a massive historical compilation in six volumes that the “Learned King” commissioned in 1272. The way in which eleven of these fictional epistles were incorporated by the Alfonsine translators sheds light on how ancient texts were perceived by medieval scholars. According to the study, King Alfonso relies on Ovid as an accurate historical source and uses the epistles of the heroines as historical documents while preserving their literary dimension. The thesis is divided into six sections. Chapter one introduces the topic of translation in relation to history and literature and argues for the use of a culturesemiotic perspective in the study of medieval translations. Chapter two looks into the General Estoria in order to frame the generic register/s to which the Heroides and Ovid belonged in Alfonso’s historic discourse. Some of these issues include literature and its historical value, and how the ancient past (in this case the times of characters in the Heroides) was used in order to investigate and interpret the concerns of the present, and form decisions about the future. Chapter three speculates on the bearing that the habitus or socio-cultural conditioning of a potential translator like Archbishop Jiménez de Rada could have had in the Alfonsine approach to translation. Chapter four analyzes the uses of and references to Ovid as a writer and his works throughout Europe in order to recreate the position both him and his works held in the socio-cultural milieu of thirteenth-century literature, history, epistolography, and rhetoric. Chapter five focuses on how the Latin text was initially adapted and segmented according to translation patterns and norms. This observational analysis of the Heroides in the GE approaches the text from the perspective of the discipline of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). My research does not seek to propose or refute any theories but, rather, to make a contribution to DTS in the form of an observational analysis

    Beneficial microorganisms and water stress influence quercus ilex seedlings’ response to phytophthora cinnamomi rands

    Root rot affecting holm oak is a cause of high ecological and economic losses in the Iberian Peninsula, highlighting the relevance of developing disease control methods. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of a biological treatment composed of beneficial organisms (Trichoderma complex, T-complex) on holm oak seedlings infected by Phytophthora cinnamomi in two contrasted holm oak ecotypes, one considered highly susceptible (HU) and another considered tolerant to the pathogen (GR). For this purpose, a complete multifactorial test was carried out in a greenhouse, and seedlings were monitored for survival analysis and morphological and physiological attribute evaluation. Mortality began earlier in the susceptible (HU) than in the tolerant (GR) ecotype, and survival showed different trends due to the inoculation with beneficial microorganisms depending on the ecotype of the plants. The tolerant ecotype showed a high survival rate and better response to the treatment with beneficial microorganisms. GLM showed that the main reason for differences between treatments was ecotype, followed by T-complex and irrigation, and a weak interaction between ecotype and P. cinnamomi was found. The linear relationship between photosynthesis (A) and transpiration (Tr) showed an increase in the A/Tr rates for infected and inoculated plants under drought conditions for the GR ecotype. The tolerant ecotype was benefited more by the beneficial microorganism treatment. The understanding of the genetic diversity of Q. ilex and water stress influence on the efficacy of biological treatments against root rot provides useful information to develop environmentally friendly disease control methods to address the holm oak decline

    The multiscenario lot size problem with concave costs

    The dynamic single-facility single-item lot size problem is addressed. The finite planning horizon is divided into several time periods. Although the total demand is assumed to be a fixed value, the distribution of this demand among the different periods is unknown. Therefore, for each period the demand can be chosen from a discrete set of values. For this reason, all the combinations of the demand vector yield a set of different scenarios. Moreover, we assume that the production/reorder and holding cost vectors can vary from one scenario to another. For each scenario, we consider as the objective function the sum of the production/reorder and the holding costs. The problem consists of determining all the Pareto-optimal or non-dominated production plans with respect to all scenarios. We propose a solution method based on a multiobjective branch and bound approach. Depending on whether shortages are considered or not, different upper bound sets are provided. Computational results on several randomly generated problems are reported

    Evolution of Surface Roughness in Grinding and its Relationship with the Dressing Parameters and the Radial Wear

    Grinding is a machining process specially indicated for finishing operations in hard materials, in order to obtain low surface roughness (Ra 0.1 ÎĽm to 2ÎĽm) and tight tolerances. The cutting tool is the grinding wheel which is formed by abrasive particles attached in a bond. The wear of these abrasive particles modifies significantly the roughness obtained in the workpiece. In this work, the evolution of part roughness has been continuously monitored as the grinding process progresses and the wheel gets worn. The roughness evolution is then related to different process variables such as the dressing parameters, the grinding conditions, the grinding forces and the radial wear of the wheel
