    A Descriptive Study of Public School Programs for Students With Serious Emotional Disturbances in the State of Virginia

    The purpose of this research study was two fold. First, the researcher wanted to determine from which conceptual model regarding classroom management techniques Virginia \u27s SED teachers predominantly function . Second, the use of physical restraint as a behavior management technique in the public schools was investigated. Both of these issues were addressed by 154 of Virginia\u27s SED teachers in a questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire consisted of opened ended questions, likert scales and fifteen scenarios designed to determine the predominant conceptual model used by SED teachers. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the information recorded on the questionnaire. The results of this study provided several important points to be considered. From the responses on the fifteen scenarios the psychoeducational model was reported to be the predominant model used by SED teachers. Lastly, the reported lack of training and established guidelines for the use of physical restraint within the schools must be addressed immediately by school administrators

    Use of Art Therapy in Treating Children with PTSD

    This article reviews the use of Art Therapy to treat children who suffer from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. It explores the clinical need for addressing trauma, including PTSD, and then reviews the effects of trauma on the brain, and how Art Therapy affects the brain. It also identifies mental health characteristics and needs for children diagnosed with PTSD. A historical background on Art Therapy is given. Art Therapy techniques are defined and described, and in the final section of the review, the use of art therapy is discussed specifically as it pertains to the treatment of children suffering from PTSD. This paper concludes that there are multiple reasons to strongly consider the use of Art Therapy when working with children whom have experienced trauma, but also acknowledges that there are some limitations in using art therapy as a diagnostic framework. Art Therapy paired with other therapies such as family and play therapies suggests some promise and consideration for future research topics

    A novel divergent geminivirus identified in Asymptomatic new world Cactaceae plants.

    Cactaceae comprise a diverse and iconic group of flowering plants which are almost exclusively indigenous to the New World. The wide variety of growth forms found amongst the cacti have led to the trafficking of many species throughout the world as ornamentals. Despite the evolution and physiological properties of these plants having been extensively studied, little research has focused on cactus-associated viral communities. While only single-stranded RNA viruses had ever been reported in cacti, here we report the discovery of cactus-infecting single-stranded DNA viruses. These viruses all apparently belong to a single divergent species of the family Geminiviridae and have been tentatively named Opuntia virus 1 (OpV1). A total of 79 apparently complete OpV1 genomes were recovered from 31 different cactus plants (belonging to 20 different cactus species from both the Cactoideae and Opuntioideae clades) and from nine cactus-feeding cochineal insects (Dactylopius sp.) sampled in the USA and Mexico. These 79 OpV1 genomes all share > 78.4% nucleotide identity with one another and < 64.9% identity with previously characterized geminiviruses. Collectively, the OpV1 genomes display evidence of frequent recombination, with some genomes displaying up to five recombinant regions. In one case, recombinant regions span ~40% of the genome. We demonstrate that an infectious clone of an OpV1 genome can replicate in Nicotiana benthamiana and Opuntia microdasys. In addition to expanding the inventory of viruses that are known to infect cacti, the OpV1 group is so distantly related to other known geminiviruses that it likely represents a new geminivirus genus. It remains to be determined whether, like its cactus hosts, its geographical distribution spans the globe

    Barriers to and enablers of diabetic retinopathy screening attendance: a systematic review of published and grey literature

    AIMS: To identify and synthesize studies reporting modifiable barriers/enablers associated with retinopathy screening attendance in people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, and to identify those most likely to influence attendance. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and the 'grey literature' for quantitative and qualitative studies to February 2017. Data (i.e. participant quotations, interpretive summaries, survey results) reporting barriers/enablers were extracted and deductively coded into domains from the Theoretical Domains Framework; with domains representing categories of theoretical barriers/enablers proposed to mediate behaviour change. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted within domains to describe the role each domain plays in facilitating or hindering screening attendance. Domains that were more frequently coded and for which more themes were generated were judged more likely to influence attendance. RESULTS: Sixty-nine primary studies were included. We identified six theoretical domains ['environmental context and resources' (75% of included studies), 'social influences' (51%), 'knowledge' (51%), 'memory, attention, decision processes' (50%), 'beliefs about consequences' (38%) and 'emotions' (33%)] as the key mediators of diabetic retinopathy screening attendance. Examples of barriers populating these domains included inaccurate diabetic registers and confusion between routine eye care and retinopathy screening. Recommendations by healthcare professionals and community-level media coverage acted as enablers. CONCLUSIONS: Across a variety of contexts, we found common barriers to and enablers of retinopathy screening that could be targeted in interventions aiming to increase screening attendance

    Integration of adaptive optics into High Energy Laser modeling and simulation

    We investigate the corrective effect of adaptive optics (AO) on High Energy Laser (HEL) beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence. The effect of adaptive optics systems was first integrated into a laser propagation scaling code, ANCHOR, that was developed within the Direct Energy (DE) research group at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). Using a host of plausible input parameters, we then compare the estimated target irradiance increase accomplished by various adaptive optics systems.     Mercury distribution in an abandoned metallurgical plant

    The aim of the work is to evaluate the spatial distribution of Hg in the soil-plant system within an area where intense activity of Hg was dominant over a long period. An abandoned metallurgical plant from the 17th-18th centuries was chosen as the study area. It is situated in Almadenejos within the Almadén mining district (Spain) that constitutes the largest and most unusual concentration of mercury in the world and has provided a third of the entire world production of mercury (Hg). Nowadays, this study area is covered with cinnabar mine tailings and village habitants use it for livestock. The area has elevated Hg concentrations of natural origin and from human activities. Soil parameters are similar throughout the study area; however, data reveal high variability in total and available Hg concentrations in soils, making it difficult to establish a tendency. Marrubium vulgare L.has been studied due to its high presence in the field plot, and there is no evidence of phenological toxicity. Furthermore, in spite of elevated Hg concentrations, a good biological activity is tested in the soil samples. All these characteristics, spatial variation, high Hg concentration, good biological activity, enhance the peculiarity of the study area for studies involving Hg
