Application of Solar Heating on the Electrolyte Conditioning for Electrowinning Process: Thermosolar Plant Performance

    Get PDF
2013 ISES Solar World CongressIn this contribution the performance of a thermosolar plant to provide heat to the copper electrowinning (EW) process is analyzed. This plant has a collecting area of 404 m2 with flat plate solar collectors, and generation capacity of 540 MWht/year. It has a thermal storage tank where water can be stored at an average temperature of 95 °C. This allows providing continuously the energy to heat the electrolyte. It was determined the performance of the solar field and global performance of the plant for a working period of 4 months at the northern region conditions from Chile. In addition, the fuel consumption reduction for replacing liquefied gas by thermal solar energy to heat the electrolyte and CO2 emissions reduction were analyzed

Impact of Unexpected Events, Shocking News and Rumours on Foreign Exchange Market Dynamics

    Get PDF
We analyze the dynamical response of the world's financial community to various types of unexpected events, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks as they unfolded on a minute-by-minute basis. We find that there are various 'species' of news, characterized by how quickly the news get absorbed, how much meaning and importance is assigned to it by the community, and what subsequent actions are then taken. For example, the response to the unfolding events of 9/11 shows a gradual collective understanding of what was happening, rather than an immediate realization. For news items which are not simple economic statements, and hence whose implications are not immediately obvious, we uncover periods of collective discovery during which collective opinions seem to oscillate in a remarkably synchronized way. In the case of a rumour, our findings also provide a concrete example of contagion in inter-connected communities. Practical applications of this work include the possibility of producing selective newsfeeds for specific communities, based on their likely impact

Long and short paths in uniform random recursive dags

In a uniform random recursive k-dag, there is a root, 0, and each node in turn, from 1 to n, chooses k uniform random parents from among the nodes of smaller index. If S_n is the shortest path distance from node n to the root, then we determine the constant \sigma such that S_n/log(n) tends to \sigma in probability as n tends to infinity. We also show that max_{1 \le i \le n} S_i/log(n) tends to \sigma in probability.Comment: 16 page

PEACE: Parallel Environment for Assembly and Clustering of Gene Expression

    Get PDF
We present PEACE, a stand-alone tool for high-throughput ab initio clustering of transcript fragment sequences produced by Next Generation or Sanger Sequencing technologies. It is freely available from www.peace-tools.org. Installed and managed through a downloadable user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI), PEACE can process large data sets of transcript fragments of length 50 bases or greater, grouping the fragments by gene associations with a sensitivity comparable to leading clustering tools. Once clustered, the user can employ the GUI's analysis functions, facilitating the easy collection of statistics and allowing them to single out specific clusters for more comprehensive study or assembly. Using a novel minimum spanning tree-based clustering method, PEACE is the equal of leading tools in the literature, with an interface making it accessible to any user. It produces results of quality virtually identical to those of the WCD tool when applied to Sanger sequences, significantly improved results over WCD and TGICL when applied to the products of Next Generation Sequencing Technology and significantly improved results over Cap3 in both cases. In short, PEACE provides an intuitive GUI and a feature-rich, parallel clustering engine that proves to be a valuable addition to the leading cDNA clustering tools

Introduction The humanization of labour places women at the centre of medical attention. In September 2013, a process of humanization of caesarean sections was launched at the Hospital General de Hospitalet. This process included the presence of a companion in low-risk caesareans, early initiation of breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact in the operating room. Objective The aim of this article is to expose the steps that were followed to launch the initiative and asses the results of a satisfaction survey conducted on the first sample of women and their companions who benefited from the procedure. Materials and methods Description of the procedure followed in the first phase and analysis of the satisfaction survey conducted during the second phase. Results The results of the satisfaction survey reveal that the initiative was highly gratifying both for women and their companions. Conclusions The fact that the delivery entails a caesarean section is no reason to deprive families of the opportunity of living together such an exciting experience.

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of the Decay B+π+π+ν\boldsymbol{B^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\ell^{+}\nu_\ell} in Fully Reconstructed Events at Belle

We present an analysis of the exclusive B+π+π+νB^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\ell^{+}\nu_{\ell} decay, where \ell represents an electron or a muon, with the assumption of charge-conjugation symmetry and lepton universality. The analysis uses the full Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) data sample collected by the Belle detector, corresponding to 711 fb1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We select the events by fully reconstructing one BB meson in hadronic decay modes, subsequently determining the properties of the other BB meson. We extract the signal yields using a binned maximum-likelihood fit to the missing-mass squared distribution in bins of the invariant mass of the two pions or the momentum transfer squared. We measure a total branching fraction of B(B+π+π+ν)=[22.71.6+1.9(stat)±3.5(syst)]×105{{\cal B}(B^{+}\to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}\ell^{+}\nu_{\ell})= [22.7 ^{+1.9}_{-1.6} (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 3.5(\mathrm{syst}) ]\times 10^{-5}}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This result is the first reported measurement of this decay.Comment: 23 pages, 19 figure

Measurement of the CKM Matrix Element Vcb|V_{cb}| from B0D+νB^{0} \to D^{*-} \ell^+ \nu_\ell at Belle

We present a new measurement of the CKM matrix element Vcb|V_{cb}| from B0D+νB^{0} \to D^{*-} \ell^+ \nu_\ell decays, reconstructed with the full Belle data set of 711fb1711 \, \rm fb^{-1} integrated luminosity. Two form factor parameterizations, originally conceived by the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) and the Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL) groups, are used to extract the product F(1)ηEWVcb\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}| and the decay form factors, where F(1)\mathcal{F}(1) is the normalization factor and ηEW\eta_{\rm EW} is a small electroweak correction. In the CLN parameterization we find F(1)ηEWVcb=(35.06±0.15±0.56)×103\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}| = (35.06 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{-3}, ρ2=1.106±0.031±0.007\rho^{2}=1.106 \pm 0.031 \pm 0.007, R1(1)=1.229±0.028±0.009R_{1}(1)=1.229 \pm 0.028 \pm 0.009, R2(1)=0.852±0.021±0.006R_{2}(1)=0.852 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.006. For the BGL parameterization we obtain F(1)ηEWVcb=(34.93±0.23±0.59)×103\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}|= (34.93 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.59)\times 10^{-3}, which is consistent with the World Average when correcting for F(1)ηEW\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}. The branching fraction of B0D+νB^{0} \to D^{*-} \ell^+ \nu_\ell is measured to be B(B0D+ν)=(4.90±0.02±0.16)%\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\rightarrow D^{*-}\ell^{+}\nu_{\ell}) = (4.90 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.16)\%. We also present a new test of lepton flavor universality violation in semileptonic BB decays, B(B0De+ν)B(B0Dμ+ν)=1.01±0.01±0.03 \frac{{\cal B }(B^0 \to D^{*-} e^+ \nu)}{{\cal B }(B^0 \to D^{*-} \mu^+ \nu)} = 1.01 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.03~. The errors correspond to the statistical and systematic uncertainties respectively. This is the most precise measurement of F(1)ηEWVcb\mathcal{F}(1)\eta_{\rm EW}|V_{cb}| and form factors to date and the first experimental study of the BGL form factor parameterization in an experimental measurement
