Getting beyond the surface : using geometric data analysis in cultural sociology

Geometric Data Analysis (GDA) refers to a group of statistical techniques that disclose underlying patterns in categorized data. GDA represents categories of variables and individuals as points in a multi-dimensional Euclidean space. This contribution presents some of GDA’s analytic properties and their connection to a relational approach of the social world. Moreover, the potential of GDA for cultural sociology will be discussed. What does GDA add to insights based on ‘orthodox’ correlational techniques and exactly how does it get beyond the surface of things? Research on the association between cultural consumption and socio-economic background will serve as an illustration

Musical preferences and technologies: Contemporary material and symbolic distinctions criticised

Today how individuals interact with various cultural items is not perfectly consistent with theoretical frameworks of influential scholars on cultural consumption, such as Bourdieu (1984), Gans (1999), and Peterson and Simkus (1992). One such variation is in the ever increasing variety of technological modes to acquire and listen to music (Pinch and Bijsterveld, 2004). However, as a consequence of digital divides (van Dijk, 2006), technological items may not be distributed equally among social groups. At present, the value of status-making through a preference for different genres of music extends itself to different forms of consumption and ways of experiencing music. We are yet to fully understand the power these practices have on generating status. This article is therefore motivated by the need to integrate within quantitative frameworks of taste and cultural consumption, an analysis of individuals’ technological engagement. These two dimensions, integrated as components of musical practices, enhance our understanding of cultural boundaries across different social groups.The objective is to bridge a gap detected in the literature, addressing the following questions: Are technological modes to listen to music related to musical tastes

The Discourse of Prayer in the Major Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles

This article presents a linguistic analysis of the prayers in the five major Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles. In the first part, the prayers are described in terms of form and structural elements. The second part offers a comparison with direct speech in the same works and Christian prayers and Greek prayers from other sources. The results suggest that this relatively uncharacterised discourse, closer to colloquial speech than any religious model, offers an authentic example of early Christian prayer

A rare case of clostridium difficile infection-associated reactive arthritis

Clostridium difficile is an uncommon cause of reactive arthritis in children. We herein present a rare case of C. difficile infection-associated reactive arthritis (CDIAReA) in a child, who developed severe diarrhea and a knee effusion following a course of oral antibiotic treatment. Our report emphasizes that CDIAReA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of children presenting with acute and painful arthritis that develops in the setting of antibiotic associated diarrhea. © 2018 by Pediatric

La gouvernance des Dominicains au-delà des théories établies

Comment peut-on caractériser le système de gouvernance typique d'un couvent dominicain ? Quels sont ses mécanismes et ses modes de fonctionnement ? Comment la gouvernance spécifique des dominicains influence-t-elle la prise de décision concernant les différentes activités du couvent ? Les informations collectées proviennent de l'analyse de la littérature, des constitutions de l'ordre dominicain et d'une série d'entretiens conduits auprès d'un échantillon de frères d'un même couvent (7 entretiens), ainsi que d'autres interlocuteurs de la famille dominicaine (4 entretiens)
