Competitive transport processes of chloride, sodium, potassium, and ammonium in fen peat

This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/There is sparse information on reactive solute transport in peat; yet, with increasing development of peatland dominated landscapes, purposeful and accidental contaminant releases will occur, so it is important to assess their mobility. Previous experiments with peat have only evaluated single-component solutions, such that no information exists on solute transport of potentially competitively adsorbing ions to the peat matrix. Additionally, recent studies suggest chloride (Cl-) might not be conservative in peat, as assumed by many past peat solute transport studies. Based on measured and modelled adsorption isotherms, this study illustrates concentration dependent adsorption of Cl- to peat occurred in equilibrium adsorption batch (EAB) experiments, which could be described with a Sips isotherm. However, Cl- adsorption was insignificant for low concentrations (<500 mg L−1) as used in breakthrough curve experiments (BTC). We found that competitive adsorption of Na+, K+, and NH4+ transport could be observed in EAB and BTC, depending on the dissolved ion species present. Na+ followed a Langmuir isotherm, K+ a linear isotherm within the tested concentration range (~10 – 1500 mg L−1), while the results for NH4+ are inconclusive due to potential microbial degradation. Only Na+ showed clear evidence of competitive behaviour, with an order of magnitude decrease in maximum adsorption capacity in the presence of NH4+ (0.22 to 0.02 mol kg-1), which was confirmed by the BTC data where the Na+ retardation coefficient differed between the experiments with different cations. A Differential Evolution Framework with Ensemble of Parameters and Strategies and Pool of Local Search Algorithms

The publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.The ensemble structure is a computational intelligence supervised strategy consisting of a pool of multiple operators that compete among each other for being selected, and an adaptation mechanism that tends to reward the most successful operators. In this paper we extend the idea of the ensemble to multiple local search logics. In a memetic fashion, the search structure of an ensemble framework cooperatively/competitively optimizes the problem jointly with a pool of diverse local search algorithms. In this way, the algorithm progressively adapts to a given problem and selects those search logics that appear to be the most appropriate to quickly detect high quality solutions. The resulting algorithm, namely Ensemble of Parameters and Strategies Differential Evolution empowered by Local Search (EPSDE-LS), is evaluated on multiple testbeds and dimensionality values. Numerical results show that the proposed EPSDE-LS robustly displays a very good performance in comparison with some of the state-of-the-art algorithms
Detectability of gravitational wave events by spherical resonant-mass antennas
We have calculated signal-to-noise ratios for eight spherical resonant-mass
antennas interacting with gravitational radiation from inspiralling and
coalescing binary neutron stars and from the dynamical and secular bar-mode
instability of a rapidly rotating star. We find that by using technology that
could be available in the next several years, spherical antennas can detect
neutron star inspiral and coalescence at a distance of 15 Mpc and the dynamical

Dynamically generated resonances from the vector octet-baryon decuplet interaction
We study the interaction of the octet of vector mesons with the decuplet of
baryons using Lagrangians of the hidden gauge theory for vector interactions.
The unitary amplitudes in coupled channels develop poles that can be associated
with some known baryonic resonances, while there are predictions for new ones
at the energy frontier of the experimental research. The work offers guidelines
on how to search for these resonances
The 1000 Brightest HIPASS Galaxies: HI Mass Function and Omega_HI
We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies
from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the
highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al.
2003). This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log
M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected
galaxies to date. We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to
measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method,
insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass
function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end
slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type,
with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various
effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function,
including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias,
and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of
galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of
neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Low surface brightness galaxies

Comparison of advanced gravitational-wave detectors
We compare two advanced designs for gravitational-wave antennas in terms of
their ability to detect two possible gravitational wave sources. Spherical,
resonant mass antennas and interferometers incorporating resonant sideband
extraction (RSE) were modeled using experimentally measurable parameters. The
signal-to-noise ratio of each detector for a binary neutron star system and a
rapidly rotating stellar core were calculated. For a range of plausible
parameters we found that the advanced LIGO interferometer incorporating RSE
gave higher signal-to-noise ratios than a spherical detector resonant at the
same frequency for both sources. Spheres were found to be sensitive to these
sources at distances beyond our galaxy. Interferometers were sensitive to these
sources at far enough distances that several events per year would be expected
Entrepreneurial sons, patriarchy and the Colonels' experiment in Thessaly, rural Greece
Existing studies within the field of institutional entrepreneurship explore how entrepreneurs influence change in economic institutions. This paper turns the attention of scholarly inquiry on the antecedents of deinstitutionalization and more specifically, the influence of entrepreneurship in shaping social institutions such as patriarchy. The paper draws from the findings of ethnographic work in two Greek lowland village communities during the military Dictatorship (1967–1974). Paradoxically this era associated with the spread of mechanization, cheap credit, revaluation of labour and clear means-ends relations, signalled entrepreneurial sons’ individuated dissent and activism who were now able to question the Patriarch’s authority, recognize opportunities and act as unintentional agents of deinstitutionalization. A ‘different’ model of institutional change is presented here, where politics intersects with entrepreneurs, in changing social institutions. This model discusses the external drivers of institutional atrophy and how handling dissensus (and its varieties over historical time) is instrumental in enabling institutional entrepreneurship
Diffusion and perfusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging for tumor volume definition in radiotherapy of brain tumors
Abstract
Accurate target volume delineation is crucial for the radiotherapy of tumors. Diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide functional information about brain tumors, and they are able to detect tumor volume and physiological changes beyond the lesions shown on conventional MRI. This review examines recent studies that utilized diffusion and perfusion MRI for tumor volume definition in radiotherapy of brain tumors, and it presents the opportunities and challenges in the integration of multimodal functional MRI into clinical practice. The results indicate that specialized and robust post-processing algorithms and tools are needed for the precise alignment of targets on the images, and comprehensive validations with more clinical data are important for the improvement of the correlation between histopathologic results and MRI parameter images
The HIPASS Catalogue - II. Completeness, Reliability, and Parameter Accuracy
The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind extragalactic HI 21-cm
emission line survey covering the whole southern sky from declination -90 to
+25. The HIPASS catalogue (HICAT), containing 4315 HI-selected galaxies from
the region south of declination +2, is presented in Meyer et al. (2004a, Paper
I). This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT,
which are calculated from the recovery rate of synthetic sources and follow-up
observations, respectively. HICAT is found to be 99 per cent complete at a peak
flux of 84 mJy and an integrated flux of 9.4 Jy km/s. The overall reliability
is 95 per cent, but rises to 99 per cent for sources with peak fluxes >58 mJy
or integrated flux > 8.2 Jy km/s. Expressions are derived for the uncertainties
on the most important HICAT parameters: peak flux, integrated flux, velocity
width, and recessional velocity. The errors on HICAT parameters are dominated
by the noise in the HIPASS data, rather than by the parametrization procedure.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 12 pages, 11 figures. Paper with
