Hepatic follicular lymphoma in an old patient with Crohnâs disease: a rare case and review of the literature
OBJECTIVE: Crohnâs Disease (CD) has been associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Follicular Lymphoma (FL) limited to the liver is extremely rare, accounting for 1% to 4.4% of all Primary Hepatic Lymphoma (PHL). CASE PRESENTATION: In 2018, an 85-years old male patient with post-operative recurrence of ileal CD referred rare episodes of fever and mild diffuse abdominal pain. Since cholecystectomy in 2001, clinical history was characterized by recurrent episodes of cholangitis and common bile duct stones. In 2018, ultrasonography and MRI showed a solid focal hepatic lesion (FHL)(4.5 cm x 2.5 cm) in the IV hepatic segment. The radiographic aspect of the lesion was unusual. Initially, focal nodular hyperplasia was suspected. Clinical history of cholangitis and radiological findings subsequently suggested a diagnosis of Hepatic Abscess (HA). A progressive enlargement of the FHL (7.3 cm x 5.8 cm) despite antibiotic treatments, led to perform a liver biopsy. Histological and immunophenotypi-cal analysis of the FHL (7.5 cm x 5.4 cm) enabled a final diagnosis of FL. The âin situâ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus (EBER) was negative. No additional lesions related to FL were initially detected, thus suggesting a very rare case of PHL in an old patient with CD never treated with thiopurines. CONCLUSIONS: This case report highlights the need to consider a rare diagnosis of FL of the liver in patients showing a challenging focal hepatic lesion of unknown origin
A PMT-Block test bench
The front-end electronics of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter (Tile Cal) is
housed in a unit, called {\it PMT-Block}. The PMT-Block is a compact instrument
comprising a light mixer, a PMT together with its divider and a {\it 3-in-1}
card, which provides shaping, amplification and integration for the signals.
This instrument needs to be qualified before being assembled on the detector. A
PMT-Block test bench has been developed for this purpose. This test bench is a
system which allows fast, albeit accurate enough, measurements of the main
properties of a complete PMT-Block. The system, both hardware and software, and
the protocol used for the PMT-Blocks characterisation are described in detail
in this report. The results obtained in the test of about 10000 PMT-Blocks
needed for the instrumentation of the ATLAS (LHC-CERN) hadronic Tile
Calorimeter are also reported.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figure
Approximating the limit: the interaction between 'almost' and some temporal connectives in Italian
International audienceThis paper focuses on the interpretation of the Italian approximative adverb 'almost' by primarily looking at cases in which it modifies temporal connectives, a domain which, to our knowledge, has been largely unexplored thus far. Consideration of this domain supports the need for a scalar account of the semantics of (close in spirit to Hitzeman's semantic analysis of , in: Canakis et al. (eds) Papers from the 28th regional meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society, 1992). When paired with suitable analyses of temporal connectives, such an account can provide a simple explanation of the patterns of implication that are observed when modifies locational (e.g. 'when'), directional (e.g. 'until' and 'since'), and event-sequencing temporal connectives (e.g. 'before' and 'after'). A challenging empirical phenomenon that is observed is a contrast between the modification of and by , on the one hand, and the modification of and by the same adverb, on the other. While and behave symmetrically, a puzzling asymmetry is observed between and . To explain the asymmetry, we propose an analysis of and on which the former has the meaning of the temporal comparative 'earlier', while the latter is seen as an atomic predicate denoting temporal succession between events (Del Prete, Nat Lang Semantics 16:157-203, 2008). We show that the same pattern of implication observed for is attested when modifies overt comparatives, and propose a pragmatic analysis of this pattern that uniformly applies to both cases, thus providing new evidence for the claim that is underlyingly a comparative. A major point of this paper is a discussion of the notion of scale which is relevant for the semantics of ; in particular, we show that the notion of Horn (entailment-based) scale is not well-suited for handling modification of temporal connectives, and that a more general notion of scale is required in order to provide a uniform analysis of as a cross-categorial modifier
Role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF-R genotyping in guiding the metastatic process in pT4a resected gastric cancer patients.
In radically resected gastric cancer the possibility to predict the site of relapse could be clinically relevant for the selection of post-surgical management. We previously showed that specific tumour integrins genotypes are independently associated with either peritoneal or hematogenous metastases (ITGA and ITGV). Recently VEGF and VEGF-R polymorphisms have been demonstrated to potentially affect tumour angiogenesis and the metastatic process in gastric cancer. We then investigated the role of VEGFs and VEGF-R genotyping in determining either peritoneal carcinosis or hematogenous metastases in radically resected gastric cancer patients. Tumour genotyping for integrins (ITGA and ITGV) was also performed according to our previous findings. Genotyping for VEGF-A, VEGF-C, VEGFR-1,2,3 and ITGA and ITGV was carried out on pT4a radically resected gastric tumours recurring with either peritoneal-only carcinosis or hematogenous metastases. 101 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria: 57 with peritoneal carcinomatosis only and 44 with hematogenous spread only. At multivariate analysis, intestinal histology and the AC genotype of rs699947 (VEGFA) showed to independently correlate with hematogenous metastases (p = 0.0008 and 0.008 respectively), whereas diffuse histology and the AA genotype of rs2269772 (ITGA) independently correlated with peritoneal-only diffusion (p = <0.0001 and 0.03 respectively). Our results seem to indicate that combining information from genotyping of rs699947 (VEGFA, AC), rs2269772 (ITGA, AA) and tumour histology could allow clinicians to individuate gastric cancer at high risk for recurrence either with peritoneal or hematogenous metastases. The selection tool deriving from this analysis may allow an optimal use of the available treatment strategies in these patients
Displacement power spectrum measurement of a macroscopic optomechanical system at thermal equilibrium
The mirror relative motion of a suspended Fabry-Perot cavity is studied in
the frequency range 3-10 Hz. The experimental measurements presented in this
paper, have been performed at the Low Frequency Facility, a high finesse
optical cavity 1 cm long suspended to a mechanical seismic isolation system
identical to that one used in the VIRGO experiment. The measured relative
displacement power spectrum is compatible with a system at thermal equilibrium
within its environmental. In the frequency region above 3 Hz, where seismic
noise contamination is negligible, the measurement distribution is stationary
and Gaussian, as expected for a system at thermal equilibrium. Through a simple
mechanical model it is shown that: applying the fluctuation dissipation theorem
the measured power spectrum is reproduced below 90 Hz and noise induced by

Targeting angiogenesis in multiple myeloma by the VEGF and HGF blocking DARPinÂź protein MP0250: a preclinical study
The investigational drug MP0250 is a multi-specific DARPinÂź molecule that simultaneously binds and neutralizes VEGF and HGF with high specificity and affinity. Here we studied the antiangiogenic effects of the MP0250 in multiple myeloma (MM). In endothelial cells (EC) isolated from bone marrow (BM) of MM patients (MMEC) MP0250 reduces VEGFR2 and cMet phosphorylation and affects their downstream signaling cascades. MP0250 influences the secretory profile of MMEC and inhibits their in vitro angiogenic activities (spontaneous and chemotactic migration, adhesion, spreading and capillarogenesis). Compared to anti-VEGF or anti-HGF neutralizing mAbs, MP0250 strongly reduces capillary network formation and vessel-sprouting in a Matrigel angiogenesis assay. MP0250 potentiates the effect of bortezomib in the same in vitro setting. It significantly reduces the number of newly formed vessels in the choriollantoic membrane assay (CAM) and the Matrigel plug assay. In the syngeneic 5T33MM tumor model, MP0250 decreases the microvessel density (MVD) and the combination MP0250/bortezomib lowers the percentage of idiotype positive cells and the serum levels of M-protein. Overall results define MP0250 as a strong antiangiogenic agent with potential as a novel combination drug for treatment of MM patients
CsI(Tl) scintillators as gamma-ray detectors for the identification of hidden explosives
We report on the performances of CsI(Tl) crystals as gamma-ray detectors, compared with standard NaI(Tl). Energy resolution from E_gamma = 122 keV up to E_gamma = 7.6 MeV and light output yield of different CsI(Tl) crystals and read-out configurations (photomultiplier tubes, photodiodes and avalanche photodiodes) have been measured.Published234-2387A. Charged particle decay of hot and rotating Mo nuclei in fusion-evaporation reactions
A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the
Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the
reaction Ti + Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is
presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been
extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data
concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of
the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited
even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a
mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data.
Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events
are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the
statistical model have been found for forward emitted -particles; they
may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as
Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the

Clinical characteristics of obese patients with adult-onset Still's disease. Data from a large multicentre cohort
Objectives: To evaluate the impact of obesity in patients with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and to assess their clinical characteristics and disease outcomes. Methods: The clinical features of AOSD patients with a body mass index (BMI) â„ 30 were assessed among those included in the multicentre Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale (GIRRCS) cohort. Results: Out of 139 AOSD patients, who had BMI registered in our database, 26 (18.7%) had a BMI â„ 30. A lower rate of sore throat (P < 0.05), pericarditis (P < 0.05), and pleuritis (P < 0.05) was shown in obese patients. Additionally, obese patients showed higher values of C-reactive protein (CRP) (P < 0.05) and ferritin (P < 0.05) than others. Furthermore, obese patients were characterised by biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (bDMARD) failure in subsequent follow-up (P < 0.05). They also presented higher rate of comorbidity than non-obese patients (P < 0.05). Finally, obesity predicted the presence of a chronic disease course in both univariate (HR: 1.72, 95%CI: 1.03â2.51, P < 0.05) and multivariate analyses (HR: 1.85, 95%CI: 1.45â2.89, P < 0.05). Obesity was also a significant predictor of bDMARD failure in AOSD patients in both univariate (HR: 3.03, 95%CI: 1.42â6.45, P < 0.01) and multivariate analyses (HR: 3.59, 95%CI: 1.55â8.27, P < 0.01). Conclusion: Obese patients at the time of diagnosis of the disease were characterised by a lower prevalence of sore throat, serositis, as well as by higher values of CRP and ferritin. Obesity was also a predictive factor for a chronic disease course and bDMARD failure, thus highlighting a subset of patients with AOSD to be carefully managed
