Attracting Tourists in a creative way: the importance of Culture: The Porto’s 2001 European Capital of Culture experience

    Get PDF
“Mega-events” describe happenings of international importance and high profile which have a major impact on the image of the host city. These events supply prestige to the host cities, and afford a profile related with the welcomed activities, and a important tourism potential. If mega events are of a sufficiently high quality then people will be prepared to travel some distance to attend. The “European Culture Capital” (ECC) mega event was created with the main objectives of bringing close together the people of the EU member states through cultural expression, and to give the EU and its cities an attractive image.Nowadays is a powerful tool to attract cultural tourists, promote urban and economic renewal and development in the cities. In this paper we will analyse the importance of “ECC” event to cultural tourism development, cultural publics enlargement, city’s equipments renewal, residents pride generation and “local” creative industries enhancement. Through “Porto 2001” event and its realizations, a critical discussion will be developed. Several short and long run will be identified, as well as implications in terms of city’s image. In this case-study, we will also verify the aims’ heterogeneity that’s present in this events development, which not permeates an exclusive “tourism analysis”info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

CONTEÚDOS DE COMUNICAÇÃO E DE POSICIONAMENTO DAS MARCAS DESTINO TURÍSTICO EM BROCHURAS E FOLHETOS TURÍSTICOS

    Get PDF

Measuring the Impacts of Smart Retailing Technologies Pilot Implementation – Proposal Framework

    Get PDF
Smart retailing technologies are transforming retailers’ operations, consumer shopping experiences, and perceptions about retailers. These technologies are becoming increasingly numerous and may have different interfaces and ways of implementation. Based on the literature review, this study develops a framework to measure the impacts of implementing non-store-based and store-based smart retailing technology pilot projects, with appropriate metrics based on brand leadership, market performance and word-of-mouth. The proposed method is based on a survey distributed to a sample of customers and control groups, using an experimental Latin square design that controls the effects of extraneous variables. With this methodology, different interfaces can be evaluated in the non-store-based pilot projects, and different locations in the store-based pilot projects implementation, controlling extraneous variables such as seasonality, customer profiles and store-specific characteristics. Finally, the academic and managerial contributions to retailers, consumers and technology companies are highlighted, as well as limitations and avenues for future research

Indirect assessment of railway infrastructure anomalies based on passenger comfort criteria

Railways are among the most efficient and widely used mass transportation systems for mid-range distances. To enhance the attractiveness of this type of transport, it is necessary to improve the level of comfort, which is much influenced by the vibration derived from the train motion and wheel-track interaction; thus, railway track infrastructure conditions and maintenance are a major concern. Based on discomfort levels, a methodology capable of detecting railway track infrastructure failures is proposed. During regular passenger service, acceleration and GPS measurements were taken on Alfa Pendular and Intercity trains between Porto (Campanhã) and Lisbon (Oriente) stations. ISO 2631 methodology was used to calculate instantaneous floor discomfort levels. By matching the results for both trains, using GPS coordinates, 12 track section locations were found to require preventive maintenance actions. The methodology was validated by comparing these results with those obtained by the EM 120 track inspection vehicle, for which similar locations were found. The developed system is a complementary condition-based maintenance tool that presents the advantage of being low-cost while not disturbing regular train operations. This research was funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, grant number PD/BD/143161/2019. Railways Passenger Comfort/Discomfort: Objective Evaluation

    Get PDF
Railways are one of the most used public transportation modes. Due to the low environmental impact, governments are promoting their use as a solution for mass transportation for middle-distance. Critical parameters to satisfy passengers and attract new ones are related to comfort, safety, and user conditions. Comfort is classified by dynamic and static methods, ideally combining both. The former is based on the comfort evaluation in the presence of vibration, whilst the latter is applied to standstill situations. Vibration, derived from the train motion, will be presented throughout the trip; thus, it is a major concern. For the same reason, assessing vibration levels associated with comfort gives important information about the train’s condition and its major maintenance or repair needs. Vibration transmissibility allows the study of the vibration frequency that is being transmitted to the user. In this chapter, the complete seat structure and the passenger’s comfort are evaluated combined with the interface pressure. This chapter presents the commonly used methodologies and results from the tests conducted on railway environment whilst running passenger service. These tests report the seat comfort evaluation and a new methodology to identify train and rail maintenance needs based on comfort analysis

Cd and Cu interdiffusion in Cu(In,Ga)Se2/CdS hetero-interfaces

We report a detailed characterization of an industry-like prepared Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS)/CdS heterojunction by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and photoluminescence (PL). Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) shows the presence of several regions in the CIGS layer that are Cu deprived and Cd enriched, suggesting the segregation of Cd-Se. Concurrently, the CdS layer shows Cd-deprived regions with the presence of Cu, suggesting a segregation of Cu-S. The two types of segregations are always found together, which, to the best of our knowledge, is observed for the first time. The results indicate that there is a diffusion process that replaces Cu with Cd in the CIGS layer and Cd with Cu in the CdS layer. Using a combinatorial approach we identified that this effect is independent of focused-ion beam sample preparation and of the TEM-grid. Furthermore, photoluminescence measurements before and after an HCl etch indicate a lower degree of defects in the post-etch sample, compatible with the segregates removal. We hypothesize that Cu2-xSe nanodomains react during the chemical bath process to form these segregates since the chemical reaction that dominates this process is thermodynamically favourable. These results provide important additional information about the formation of the CIGS/CdS interface.publishe
