The "discussion - case study approach" in introduction to philosophy of education courses

These selections, taken from B. Ed. students' reflective commentary at the end of a 10 week introductory course in philosophy of education, capture the popular expectations, stereotyped impressions or feelings that pre-service education students normally hold about foundations courses especially philosophy of education: scepticism, intimidation, boredom, uselessness, fear and practical irrelevance. A grim though very real picture! The delicate task of teaching introductory foundations courses becomes more difficult and also tragic when one learns, as stated in a couple of the above selections, that most students come with a strong and long background of "traditional teaching" in which complacency, uncriticallness, and the urge to acquire the right answer, which the teacher possesses, to get the highest grade, are implanted explicitly via the formal curriculum or implicitly via teaching styles. These qualities are essentially incompatible with a foundations perspective, and, some believe, even with the very notion of education.peer-reviewe

Inclusive education : beyond popular discourses

The popular discourse of democratic education is home to numerous myths surrounding our conceptions of what inclusion means in today’s schools. Certain beliefs like the idea that offering equal opportunities for participation to all students regardless of individual need, which conflates equality and equity, or that democracy in classrooms involves nothing more than limitless inclusion are upheld as go-to solutions for the inevitable dilemmas for educators committed to inclusion. This paper argues that philosophical clarification of the concept of inclusion is urgently required by teachers, policy makers, and theorists of education committed to both democracy in education and democratic education. Our most urgent concern is related to the inherent attitude toward deficit implied by different understandings of inclusion. This is not necessarily due to the unclarities and ambiguities associated with the concept itself, but rather reflect the calculated and anticipatory way educators tend to approach classroom practice. We argue that with careful philosophical clarification, along with an entirely new stance on the part of teachers regarding their pedagogical practice and a reconceptualized notion of student ‘needs’, the concept of inclusion can continue to remain not only useful but essential to creating a robust democratic community in the classroom.peer-reviewe

Neoliberal Elements in Canadian Teacher Education: Challenges and Possibilities

This article offers a critical reflection of the changes experienced in teacher education across Canada in light of the neoliberal impact on educational spaces. It also seeks to disrupt the neoliberal narrative and problematize a rationality that has permeated teacher education programs. The article maintains that the neoliberal agenda is incompatible with critical educational practices. As a mode of critical resistance to educational instrumentalism, the paper offers recommendations as part of its critique on the deleterious impact of neoliberalism.Cet article offre une réflexion critique des changements découlant de l’impact néolibéral sur les milieux éducatifs qui touchent la formation des enseignants partout au Canada. L’article veut également perturber la théorie néolibérale et problématiser une rationalité qui s’est infiltrée dans les programmes de formation des enseignants. L’article affirme que le programme néolibéral est incompatible avec des pratiques éducatives cruciales. A genome wide association study of moderate-severe asthma in subjects from the United Kingdom

Rationale: Genome wide association studies (GWAS) in asthma have been successful in identifying disease susceptibility genes, however to date these have focused on mild disease. The genetic risk factors for moderate-severe asthma remain unclear. Aim: To identify common genetic variants affecting susceptibility to develop moderate-severe asthma. Methods: We identified asthma cases and controls from UK Biobank and additional cases from the Genetics of Asthma Severity & Phenotypes (GASP) cohort. A genome-wide association study was undertaken in 5,135 European ancestry individuals with moderate-severe asthma based on British Thoracic Society criteria 3 or above and 25,675 controls free from lung disease, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. After imputation (UK10K + 1000 genomes Phase 3) and standard quality control measures, the association of 33,771,858 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were tested. A logistic model of association of asthma status with imputed genotype dose was fitted using SNPTEST adjusted for ancestry principal components. Results: We identified 22 loci showing association (P < 5 × 10(-8)) including novel signals in or near D2HGDH, STAT6, HLA-B, CD247, GATA3, PDCD1LG2, ZNF652, RPAP3, MUC5AC and BACH2. Previously described asthma loci where replicated including signals in or near HLA-DQB1, TSLP, IL1RL1/IL18R1, CLEC16A, GATA3, IL33, SMAD3, SLC22A5/IL13, C11orf30, ZBTB10, IKZF3-ORMDL3 and IKZF4. Conclusion: The largest genome-wide association study of moderate-severe asthma to date was carried out and multiple novel loci where identified. These findings may provide new insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying this difficult to treat population

Determining the contribution of IL33 and IL1RL1 polymorphisms to clinical and immunological features of asthma

Rationale: IL33 (9p24.1) and the IL33 receptor (IL1RL, 2q12) have been reproducibly identified as asthma susceptibility genes. However, the variants driving genetic associations are not yet fully defined. Using a population based birth cohort of 1059 children (Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study-(MAAS)) and 2536 adults with asthma (Genetics of Asthma Severity and Phenotypes- (GASP)) cohort we aimed to define genetic variants associated with clinical and immunological features of asthma. Methods: MAAS samples were genotyped using the Illumina 610 Quad array and imputed using 1000G reference panel. GASP samples were genotyped using two custom designed Affymetrix arrays (UK BiLEVE/UK Biobank array). Datasets were quality controlled for gender mismatches, outliers and relatedness. Data was generated for the IL33/IL1RL1 regions consisting of the genes and surrounding regions (chr9:5715785−6757983 & chr2:102427961−103468497) on the following traits: asthma diagnosis (MAAS), atopy, FEV1 (GASP) and FEV1/FVC (MAAS and GASP) as well as total blood eosinophil counts and serum total IgE levels (GASP). Variables for blood eosinophils and total IgE were log10 transformed. Analysis was carried out in PLINK using linear or logistic regression modelling including appropriate covariates for each trait. Results: In the MAAS cohort, we replicated the association of the IL33 locus with asthma diagnosis, identifying potentially two independent novel signals in that locus (rs10975398; P=1.70E-05; B= -1.519; MAF=0.32 and rs2890697; P=1.10E-04; B= -1.573; MAF=0.43). This association survived a Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Although not surviving correction, an association was also identified for atopy in the IL1RL1 locus for MAAS (P=1.08E-04; MAF=0.48). In GASP we identified modest associations not in known LD with published loci (P-value range: 5.00E-02 – 7.60E-04) for FEV1, FEV1/FVC, atopy, blood eosinophils and total IgE in both the IL33 and IL1RL1 loci. Multiple SNPs presented nominal association (P<0.01) with more than one trait such as atopy & total IgE, providing supporting evidence for association. Conclusion: We replicated the association of IL33 region SNPs with asthma diagnosis in MAAS, highlighting the role of this locus in childhood asthma. Although trait association signals did not survive correction for multiple testing, nominal association across multiple phenotypes in GASP provides suggestive evidence of the role of the IL33/IL1RL1 genetic polymorphisms in determining clinical and immunological features of asthma

Political travel across the ‘Iron Curtain’ and Communist youth identities in West Germany and Greece in the 1970s and 1980s

This article explores tours through the Iron Curtain arranged by West German and Greek pro-Soviet Communist youth groups, in an attempt to shed light on the transformation of European youth cultures beyond the ‘Americanisation’ story. It argues that the concept of the ‘black box’, employed by Rob Kroes to describe the influence of American cultural patterns on Western European youth, also applies to the reception of Eastern Bloc policies and norms by the Communists under study. Such selective reception was part of these groups’ efforts to devise a modernity alternative to the ‘capitalist’ one, an alternative modernity which tours across the Iron Curtain would help establish. Nevertheless, the organisers did not wish such travel to help eliminate American/Western influences on youth lifestyles entirely: the article analyses the excursions’ aims with regard to two core components of youth lifestyles in Western Europe since the 1960s, which have been affected by intra-Western flows, the spirit of ‘doing one’s own thing’ and transformations of sexual practices. The article also addresses the experience of the travellers in question, showing that they felt an unresolved tension: the tours neither served as a means of Sovietisation nor as an impulse to develop an openly anti-Soviet stance.PostprintPeer reviewe

Genome-wide association analyses for lung function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease identify new loci and potential druggable targets

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by reduced lung function and is the third leading cause of death globally. Through genome-wide association discovery in 48,943 individuals, selected from extremes of the lung function distribution in UK Biobank, and follow-up in 95,375 individuals, we increased the yield of independent signals for lung function from 54 to 97. A genetic risk score was associated with COPD susceptibility (odds ratio per 1 s.d. of the risk score (∼6 alleles) (95% confidence interval) = 1.24 (1.20-1.27), P = 5.05 × 10‾⁴⁹), and we observed a 3.7-fold difference in COPD risk between individuals in the highest and lowest genetic risk score deciles in UK Biobank. The 97 signals show enrichment in genes for development, elastic fibers and epigenetic regulation pathways. We highlight targets for drugs and compounds in development for COPD and asthma (genes in the inositol phosphate metabolism pathway and CHRM3) and describe targets for potential drug repositioning from other clinical indications.This work was funded by a Medical Research Council (MRC) strategic award to M.D.T., I.P.H., D.S. and L.V.W.
