    Effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning Prior to Lectures on Learning and Retention

    In the mandatory tutorial sections of an introductory probability and statistics course of just over 70 students in the Arts and Science undergraduate program, students were randomly assigned to small groups to work on accessible problems from upcoming material without any prior instruction on how to solve them. Solutions were ungraded, and marks were assigned for participation only. A multiyear study was conducted to test students for their level of retention one year later, comparing them to a previous control group. The test question concerned Bayes’ Theorem. Results suggest that the strategy improves student reasoning and retention of concepts while, as expected, a formula is long forgotten. However, low participation rates in the survey post-test produced a p-value of 20%, precluding a claim of statistical significance. Nonetheless, qualitative student feedback on surveys during the course showed a very strong positive response to the approach. Students reported the approach helped their thinking and reasoning, and assisted in their learning. They appreciated the informal, low-pressure environment of the problem-based learning (PBL) sessions, and reported that the sessions were beneficial for developing their own understanding of the concepts before going to lecture. Notwithstanding their positive feedback on PBL activities, students still expressed a preference for traditional instructional approaches where the teaching assistant leads them through solution procedures

    Newton's method applied to certain problems with a discontinuous derivative operator is shown to be effective. A global Newton method in this setting is exhibited and its computational complexity is estimated. As an application a method is proposed to solve problems of linear inequalities (linear programming, phase 1).     Protective Places: the Relationship between Neighborhood Quality and Preterm Births to Black Women in Oakland, California (2007–2011)

    Black women have the highest incidence of preterm birth (PTB). Upstream factors, including neighborhood context, may be key drivers of this increased risk. This study assessed the relationship between neighborhood quality, defined by the Healthy Places Index, and PTB among Black women who lived in Oakland, California, and gave birth between 2007 and 2011 (N = 5418 women, N = 107 census tracts). We found that, compared with those living in lower quality neighborhoods, women living in higher quality neighborhoods had 20–38% lower risk of PTB, independent of confounders. Findings have implications for place-based research and interventions to address racial inequities in PTB

    We report a case of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) following respiratory syncytial virus infection in an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipient with chronic graft-versus-host disease. Delayed diagnosis of IPA resulted in the development of a pneumothorax, a rare consequence of fungal pneumonia. Respiratory virus infections are often harbingers of other infective organisms in HSCT recipients. More aggressive diagnostic investigations such as computed tomography scans of the thorax and bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage should be considered early in any HSCT patient presenting with respiratory virus pneumonia, particularly if atypical features are present or recovery is delayed

    Microtesla MRI of the human brain combined with MEG

    One of the challenges in functional brain imaging is integration of complementary imaging modalities, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). MEG, which uses highly sensitive superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) to directly measure magnetic fields of neuronal currents, cannot be combined with conventional high-field MRI in a single instrument. Indirect matching of MEG and MRI data leads to significant co-registration errors. A recently proposed imaging method - SQUID-based microtesla MRI - can be naturally combined with MEG in the same system to directly provide structural maps for MEG-localized sources. It enables easy and accurate integration of MEG and MRI/fMRI, because microtesla MR images can be precisely matched to structural images provided by high-field MRI and other techniques. Here we report the first images of the human brain by microtesla MRI, together with auditory MEG (functional) data, recorded using the same seven-channel SQUID system during the same imaging session. The images were acquired at 46 microtesla measurement field with pre-polarization at 30 mT. We also estimated transverse relaxation times for different tissues at microtesla fields. Our results demonstrate feasibility and potential of human brain imaging by microtesla MRI. They also show that two new types of imaging equipment - low-cost systems for anatomical MRI of the human brain at microtesla fields, and more advanced instruments for combined functional (MEG) and structural (microtesla MRI) brain imaging - are practical.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures - accepted by JM
