The ARTEMIS simulations: stellar haloes of Milky Way-mass galaxies
We introduce the Assembly of high-ResoluTion Eagle-simulations of MIlky Way-type galaxieS (ARTEMIS) simulations, a new set of 42 zoomed-in, high-resolution (baryon particle mass of ≈2×104M⊙h−1), hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies residing in haloes of Milky Way mass, simulated with the EAGLE galaxy formation code with re-calibrated stellar feedback. In this study, we analyse the structure of stellar haloes, specifically the mass density, surface brightness, metallicity, colour, and age radial profiles, finding generally very good agreement with recent observations of local galaxies. The stellar density profiles are well fitted by broken power laws, with inner slopes of ≈−3, outer slopes of ≈−4, and break radii that are typically ≈20–40 kpc. The break radii generally mark the transition between in situ formation and accretion-driven formation of the halo. The metallicity, colour, and age profiles show mild large-scale gradients, particularly when spherically averaged or viewed along the major axes. Along the minor axes, however, the profiles are nearly flat, in agreement with observations. Overall, the structural properties can be understood by two factors: that in situ stars dominate the inner regions and that they reside in a spatially flattened distribution that is aligned with the disc. Observations targeting both the major and minor axes of galaxies are thus required to obtain a complete picture of stellar haloes
Shared Care, Elder and Family Member Skills Used to Manage Burden
Aim. The aim of this paper is to further develop the construct of Shared Care by comparing and contrasting it to related research, and to show how the construct can be used to guide research and practice.
Background. While researchers have identified negative outcomes for family caregivers caused by providing care, less is known about positive aspects of family care for both members of a family dyad. Understanding family care relationships is important to nurses because family participation in the care of chronically ill elders is necessary to achieve optimal outcomes from nursing interventions. A previous naturalistic inquiry identified a new construct, Shared Care, which was used to describe a family care interaction that contributed to positive care outcomes.
Methods. A literature review was carried out using the databases Medline, CINAHL, and Psych-info and the keywords home care, care receiver, disability, family, communication, decision-making and reciprocity. The results of the review were integrated to suggest how Shared Care could be used to study care difficulties and guide interventions.
Results. The literature confirmed the importance of dyad relationships in family care. Shared Care extended previous conceptualizations of family care by capturing three critical components: communication, decision-making, and reciprocity. Shared Care provides a structure to expand the conceptualization of family care to include both members of a care dyad and account for positive and negative aspects of care.
Conclusions. The extended view provided by the construct of Shared Care offers practitioners and scholars tools to use in the context of our ageing population to improve the effectiveness of family care relationships
Intra-molecular coupling as a mechanism for a liquid-liquid phase transition
We study a model for water with a tunable intra-molecular interaction
, using mean field theory and off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations.
For all , the model displays a temperature of maximum
density.For a finite intra-molecular interaction ,our
calculations support the presence of a liquid-liquid phase transition with a
possible liquid-liquid critical point for water, likely pre-empted by
inevitable freezing. For J=0 the liquid-liquid critical point disappears at

Should science educators deal with the science/religion issue?
I begin by examining the natures of science and religion before looking at the ways in which they relate to one another. I then look at a number of case studies that centre on the relationships between science and religion, including attempts to find mechanisms for divine action in quantum theory and chaos theory, creationism, genetic engineering and the writings of Richard Dawkins. Finally, I consider some of the pedagogical issues that would need to be considered if the science/religion issue is to be addressed in the classroom. I conclude that there are increasing arguments in favour of science educators teaching about the science/religion issue. The principal reason for this is to help students better to learn science. However, such teaching makes greater demands on science educators than has generally been the case. Certain of these demands are identified and some specific suggestions are made as to how a science educator might deal with the science/religion issue. © 2008 Taylor & Francis
DES Y3 + KiDS-1000: Consistent cosmology combining cosmic shear surveys
We present a joint cosmic shear analysis of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3)
and the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) in a collaborative effort between the
two survey teams. We find consistent cosmological parameter constraints between
DES Y3 and KiDS-1000 which, when combined in a joint-survey analysis, constrain
the parameter with a mean value of
. The mean marginal is lower than the maximum a
posteriori estimate, , owing to skewness in the marginal
distribution and projection effects in the multi-dimensional parameter space.
Our results are consistent with constraints from observations of the
cosmic microwave background by Planck, with agreement at the level.
We use a Hybrid analysis pipeline, defined from a mock survey study quantifying
the impact of the different analysis choices originally adopted by each survey
team. We review intrinsic alignment models, baryon feedback mitigation
strategies, priors, samplers and models of the non-linear matter power
