Stages for the More Sustainable Farm

    Get PDF
Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones. Analyses of the results allow us to confirm the greatest relative sustainability of the planned farm, for the diverse traced scenarios.Decision taking, planning, sustainability, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management,

Olympism, Ethics and The Rio 2016 Olympic Games Preparations: An Ethical Analysis

Olympism is the underlying philosophy of the modern Olympic Games. It provides the ethical foundation of the Olympic Movement. This thesis defends the maintenance of human rights as essential for the achievement of Olympism. The problem investigated and evaluated in this thesis is the preparation for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. A critical analysis and account of the ethical demeanor in regard to the actualization of Olympism is provided. By comparing relevant current issues with past Olympic Games, the recurring problems in achieving Olympism are identified. The conclusion emphasizing the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) responsibility for ensuring that Olympism, and its underpinning values, are a fundamental aspect of the Olympic Games

Rossi, Salvini, Ristori incontrano Shakespeare (Amleto, Otello, Lady Macbeth)

Life Strategies, Ecology, and Risks in a Changing Environment

UIDB/CVT/00772/2020. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 by the authors.Vibrios are ubiquitous bacteria in aquatic systems, especially marine ones, and belong to the Gammaproteobacteria class, the most diverse class of Gram-negative bacteria. The main objective of this review is to update the information regarding the ecology of Vibrio species, and contribute to the discussion of their potential risk in a changing environment. As heterotrophic organisms, Vibrio spp. live freely in aquatic environments, from marine depths to the surface of the water column, and frequently may be associated with micro- and macroalgae, invertebrates, and vertebrates such as fish, or live in symbiosis. Some Vibrio spp. are pathogenic to humans and animals, and there is evidence that infections caused by vibrios are increasing in the world. This rise may be related to global changes in human behavior (increases in tourism, maritime traffic, consumption of seafood, aquaculture production, water demand, pollution), and temperature. Most likely in the future, Vibrio spp. in water and in seafood will be monitored in order to safeguard human and animal health. Regulators of the microbiological quality of water (marine and freshwater) and food for human and animal consumption, professionals involved in marine and freshwater production chains, consumers and users of aquatic resources, and health professionals will be challenged to anticipate and mitigate new risks.publishersversionpublishe

Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in children and adolescents: Neglected and emerging issues.

Pediatric non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis is characterized by endobronchial suppuration, airway neutrophilic inflammation and poor mucus clearance and is associated with persistent productive cough due to recurrent airway infections. Most recommendations are based on expert opinion or extrapolated from CF practice. The present narrative review aims to address some issues on the management of children or adolescents with non CF-bronchiectasis that still require attention, and analyze what available literature offers to reply to open questions. We focused on the potential offered by technological advances on lung disease assessment through novel chest imaging techniques and new or old pulmonary function tests. We also summarized the main novelties in the disease prevention and treatment. Finally, a novel diagnostic algorithm is proposed, that might help physicians in the daily clinical decision-making process. Future directions for research on pediatric non-CF bronchiectasis should include larger study populations and longer prospective clinical trials, as well as new clinical and laboratory endpoints to determine the underlying mechanisms of lung disease progression and support the role of new and existing treatments
