Three methods for distinctive (independent) features determination were designed and implemented in computer programs. Two of them were based on the assumption that the maximum number of the dependent variable’s values cannot exceed the number of the points of the variable space. Using the third method, some functional relations between a priori chosen dependent features and the sets of a priori chosen independent features were studied. The main purpose of another method was to determine the minimum sets of features necessary to distinguish individual objects in a given set. It allowed to evaluate features’ “load” (how often they were used in the task of object’s distinguishing). In this way, any complex functional relations of any number of categorical features which can take any number of values can be determined. Possible applications vary from optimizing phones’ description in the articulatory space, to the optimal selection of graphical features of different alphabets’ signs, and database normalization

The better, the worse, or a spectre of a crisis of urban social movements?

Miejskie ruchy społeczne są coraz wyraźniej obecne w sferze publicznej i w centrum debaty politycznej. Część z nich przesuwa się też coraz wyraźniej w stronę zinstytucjonalizowanej polityki, wyrażając rosnące ambicje polityczne. Papierkiem lakmusowym tego procesu były zakończone niedawno wybory samorządowe. „Wejście w system”, jakie nastąpiło w kilku przypadkach, jest – być może – punktem przełomowym dla logiki rozwojowej ruchów.W artykule staram się podjąć problemy, jakie to rodzi. Dwa z nich dotyczą problemów istotnych dla samej socjologii: budowy teorii (miejskich) ruchów społecznych oraz problemu społecznego (współ)wytwarzania wiedzy. Trzeci dotyczy możliwego kryzysu związanego z potencjalnym ryzykiem zbyt daleko posuniętej instytucjonalizacji ruchów społecznych.Urban social movements have been increasingly present in the public sphere, as well as at the very core of political debate in contemporary Poland. Some of them have also moved towards institutionalized politics, expressing growing political ambitions. The litmus test of this process were recent local elections. The political strategy of ‘entering the system,’ which takes place in some cases, may be a turning point in the logic of political development of Polish urban social movements.The paper examines some of the most crucial problems it raises. Two of them deal with essential problems of sociology itself: firstly, with the construction of the theory of (urban) social movements and secondly, with the problem of social (co)production of knowledge. The third issue concerns the possible crisis of urban social movements as a consequence of their too far-reaching institutionalization

O roszczeniach pozaparlamentarnej (post?)polityki. Przypadek miejskich ruchów społecznych w Polsce.

Główne problemy planowego artykułu dotyczą krytycznej analizy uniwersalistycznych roszczeń wysuwanych przez rozmaite podmioty pozaparlamentarnej polityki, w tym wypadku część tzw. miejskich ruchów społecznych. Podstawowe pytanie jakie stawiam dotyczy (nie)możliwości takiego modelu pozaparlamentarnej polityczności, który próbuje być jednocześnie polityczny i aideologiczny. Przedmiotem rozważań są wewnętrzne napięcia pomiędzy rozmaitymi frakcjami miejskich ruchów społecznych we współczesnej Polsce, ze szczególnym uwzględnienie kontekstu tak zwanych „narracji konkretnych” jako próby ich „odpolitycznienia”. Konkluzją rozważań jest koncepcja „demokracji miejskiej”, przede wszystkim w jej wersji Purcellowskiej ( Recapturing Democracy , 2008), jako możliwie proste narzędzie nietotalizującego, uniwersalistycznego pluralizmu politycznego

"Meeting of waters"? The complex landscape of the Polish right to the city activism

For over a decade, the explosion of various forms of urban activism has been observed: so-called urban social movements or the right to the city (RTTC) move-ments actively participate in the realm of non-institutional politics. This trend has been observed both worldwide and in Europe, particularly in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Poland is also a clear example of this tendency. The paper pre-sented aims to achieve two goals. First of all, it is based on desk research and offers a broad literature overview, indicating the main directions and results in urban activism research in Poland of the last ten years. Recalling and discussing the broadest possi-ble body of literature, with particular emphasis on Polish-language references, should be useful for international readers and researchers. Secondly, the paper attempts to synthesize these current research results, including the authors own research results, identifying the complexity of the field of urban activism. As a result, it points to various entities using the RTTC slogan in their social struggles, consequently identifying two main types of RTTC activism: radical and middle-class petit-bourgeois movements

The paper deals with the issue of the economic views developed by the Movement for an Alternative Society (Pl.: Ruch Społeczeństwa Alternatywnego), a social movement that operated in Poland most actively in the 1980s and ‘90s. Its primary focus concerns the critique of liberalism, as well as the critique of the systemic liberaltransformation of 1989. The views presented became an important element of the tradition of Polish anti-systemic movements and a crucial factor in the process of the revival of the Polish public sphere.Artykuł podejmuje problematykę poglądów ekonomicznych rozwijanych w ramach Ruchu Społeczeństwa Alternatywnego, ruchu społecznego aktywnie działającego w Polsce w latach 80. i 90. XX wieku. Skupia się przede wszystkim na polemice RSA z liberalizmem oraz krytyce liberalnej transformacji ustrojowej roku 1989. Rekonstruowane tu poglądy stały się istotnym składnikiem dziedzictwa polskich, antysystemowych ruchów społecznych, jak również elementem odradzającej się sfery publicznej

Muzyka, co oczywiste, nie jest zjawiskiem wyłącznie estetycznym. Osadzona jest w sieci relacji społecznych, jednakowoż jej społeczne uwikłanie nie jest jednoznaczne, szczególnie od drugiej połowy dwudziestego wieku. Z jednej strony stanowi ona współcześnie jeden z głównych elementów kapitalizmu kulturowego, jest zatem częścią systemu dominacji. Z drugiej jednak, muzyka prowokuje i współwytwarza lub ewentualnie wzmacnia i koegzystuje z licznymi (kontr)dyskursami i projektami społecznymi o antyhegemonicznym charakterze. Z tak nakreślonej perspektywy rozpatruję wzajemne relacje między rewolucyjnym formalnie i społecznie jazzem a ruchami społecznymi, zarówno ruchami konstytuującymi civil rights movement, przede wszystkim jednak radykalnymi, odwołującymi się do idei black power. Interesowały mnie szczególnie kwestie samoorganizacji i praktyk społecznych oraz alternatywy wypracowywane przez radykalizujące środowiska jazzowe w rozmaitych przestrzeniach, na przykład gospodarczej, ale i symbolicznej.Music is obviously not only an aesthetic phenomenon. It is embeddedin a dense network of social relations. However, its social involvementis rather ambiguous, particularly since the second half of the twentiethcentury. On the one hand, music is one of the main elements of culturalcapitalism and a part of the system of domination. Perspektywa poznawcza w badaniach ruchów społecznych: przypadek ruchów na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej

Łagodzenie i adaptacja do zmian klimatu to dwa krytyczne wyzwania cywilizacyjne, wobec których staje wiele podmiotów społecznych. Celem artykułu jest analiza fenomenu polskich ruchów społecznych na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej za pomocą „podejścia poznawczego”, wprowadzonego i rozwijanego przez Rona Eyermana i Andrew Jamisona. Artykuł podejmuje dwa główne problemy. Po pierwsze, zawiera rekonstrukcję konceptualno-metodologicznych ram dla badań nad aktywizmem na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej. Po drugie, prezentuje wstępne rozpoznanie uniwersów poznawczych i praktyk polskich ruchów na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej, opierając się na desk research oraz badaniach opartych na 30 wywiadach pogłębionych przeprowa dzonych w trzech polskich miastach (Poznań, Wrocław, Warszawa). Artykuł wskazuje również na luki badawcze, identyfikując przede wszystkim potrzebę większego zaangażowania nauk społecznych w działania na rzecz łagodzenia zmian klimatu, w tym otwarcia środowiska akademickiego na perspektywy oddolne

The effect of bisphenol A on growth, pigment composition and photosystem II activity of Arabidopsis thaliana

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used chemical, that can potentially be toxic to plants. In this study we examined the toxicity of 5-50 mg/l of BPA on Arabidopsis thaliana. Additionally, the effects of 0.5-5 mg/l of BPA were examined after four weeks of development. BPA had no effect on the germination rate and the chlorophyll a/b ratio. The chlorophyll a and carotenoid content was significantly elevated in seedlings treated with 5 mg/l of BPA. In 4-week-old plants there was no change in the chlorophyll and carotenoid content and photosynthetic parameters (Fv/Fm, Fv/F0 and PI) were unaffected, which suggests no photoinhibition. No oxidative stress symptoms were observed. BPA significantly decreased leaf protein content. A low concentration of BPA seems to have no significant effect on A. thaliana flowering, but further investigation is needed. The results obtained indicate that a low concentration of BPA has no negative effect on the growth and development of A. thaliana

The paper deals with the idea of ??the right to the city (RTTC), one ofthe leading ideologies of contemporary emancipatory politics. It also focuses on socialactors (mainly Polish urban social movements) as the RTTC users and deals with theproblem how urban activists use the idea in everyday political praxis. The right to thecity is analysed with respect to the Laclau’s notion of an “empty signifier”, that is, as anelement which depends on the interpretation put on it in the pragmatics of social struggles.Furthermore, the article examines the fact of consistent functionalization of theRTTC idea. The initially Marxian concept of revolutionary origins is now becomingincreasingly reformist and is being used mainly as a popular political label.Artykuł podejmuje wątki związane z ideą prawa do miasta: traktuje ją jako jedną z naczelnych ideologii polityki emancypacyjnej, z drugiej strony wyraża zainteresowanie aktorami odwołującymi się (wprost i nie wprost) do jej retoryki. Analizuje prawo do miasta jako puste znaczące – kategorię, której sens nadają aktorzy wykorzystujący ją w ramach pragmatyki walk społecznych. Stara się też podjąć wątek „(r)ewolucyjnej retoryki” rozmaitych podmiotów zmiany społecznej, wskazując na fakt postępującej funkcjonalizacji idei prawa do miasta, która z ideologii (czy też doktryny praktycznej) o marksistowskiej, ergo rewolucyjnej proweniencji wykorzystywana jest coraz częściej jako polityczna etykieta
