Catalytic conversion of syngas to alcohols and hydrocarbons over transition metal-based micro/mesoporous catalysts

    Get PDF
Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is the most extensively used process for the synthesis of linear hydrocarbons from syngas. Lighter products can be used a diesel fuel, and heavier ones can be used as waxes. Higher Alcohols Synthesis (HAS) is a reaction process to obtain alcohols containing two or more carbon atoms. These alcohols can be used as intermediates for the synthesis of lubricants, detergents and cosmetics. The objective of this thesis is the study of CO hydrogenation using different types of supported catalysts to obtain fuel-range hydrocarbons via FTS, or to produce higher alcohols via HAS. The first block of the thesis studies the effect of zeolite acidity and mesoporosity in FeCuMgK catalysts supported on ZSM-40 and ZSM-240. The second block evaluates the influence of metal loading on binary and ternary FeCoCu catalysts supported on mesoporous silica SBA-15 for the production of higher alcohols

Exploring the Needs and Preferences for a Diabetes Self-Management Program in Hispanics Living in the Central Valley of California

    Get PDF
Diabetes mellitus type 2 is an ever increasing threat to the health of people living in the United States, especially those of Hispanic ethnicity. This ethnic group is disproportionately afflicted with the chronic condition and is also more likely than non-Hispanic whites to suffer from serious complications of diabetes. This project examines this growing problem among Hispanics living in the Central Valley of California by exploring how best to structure diabetes self-management education in a network of community health centers. The Social Cognitive Theory provides a theoretical basis for investigation into motivation for diabetes self-management. This needs assessment specifically explored data on barriers to diabetes care, patient education preferences, and existing diabetes knowledge by asking subjects to complete two low-literacy bilingual surveys. Ninety-four completed survey packets from two health center locations were received. Data analysis revealed that the sample was relatively homogenous demographically. Education preferences showed strong support for individual education sessions with certified diabetes educators or patients’ regular medical providers, preferably Hispanic individuals. The need for diabetes education is supported by an average score of roughly 50% correct on the diabetes knowledge surveys. Recommendations resulting from this data center on utilizing diabetes educators within the health centers

Enhancing surface topology of Udimet®720 superalloy through ultrasonic vibration-assisted ball burnishing

    Get PDF
This contribution reports the effects of an ultrasonic-vibration assisted ball burnishing process on the topological descriptors of nickel-based alloy Udimet®720. This material is of high interest for the transportation industry, and specifically for the aeronautical sector. Despite the acknowledged necessity to finish this material to achieve excelling mechanical performances of parts, surface integrity enhancement by means of plastic deformation through ball burnishing has seldom been explored in previous references so far. In this paper, different surface descriptors are used to report how the topology changes after ultrasonic-assisted ball burnishing, and how burnishing conditions influence that change. The burnishing preload and the number of passes are the only influential factors on surface change, whereas the feed velocity of the tool and the strategy reveal not to be relevant on the result. Additionally, the extent to which the process successfully modifies the objective surfaces is highly divergent depending on the original scale of the treated surface. The assistance of the process with vibrations also shows that the resulting topologies are characterized by a periodical pattern of repetitive peaks and valleys that are extended on the surface with a higher frequency in comparison to the non-assisted process, which could influence in the functional deployment of workpieces treated through it, and could deliver an advantage with regard to its non-assisted homologous process.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

The adaptation of undergraduate studies to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) tries to develop a new educational model based on the active-learning role of the student. The aplication on higher education of Information and Communication Technologies may be an important tool for improving the present teaching methods, especially in subjects based on a high iconographical content, such as morphological sciences and some clinician subjects. In the undergraduate Veterinarian studies of the UAB, the face-to-face workload of the students (lectures, practical sessions...) is very high, and this fact does not allow enough time to the students for a correct active and self-learning model. With the objective of reducing the impact of that problem, the teaching staff of subjects such as Animal Anatomy, Parasitology and Pathology is reducing the face-to-face teaching activities and publishing online digital contents, mainly in form of atlases. Some of those contents are published on our educational web site, named "Veterinaria Virtual" (http://quiro.uab.es). The students have free access to the contents and, in addition to the reduced face-to-face workload, it is sugested that it helps to improve the teaching-learning process, making easier the active and self-learning and allowing the continous evaluation of the student. These facts can help to locate the student in the centre of the teaching-learning process, acquiring the needed protagonism in the educational process wich is one of the main purposes of the adaptation to the EHEA. The student's opinion about the free availability online of the educational contents is very positive because it can be easily and continuosly consulted with a low economical cost

Ra isotopes and Rn as a tool for the water management resources : the Alberquillas aquifer (Málaga-Granada)

    Get PDF
The aim of this project is to evaluate the importance of submarine groundwater discharge sector in order to improve the water balance in Málaga-Granada region. The approach of this study arose from the the geology and the aquifers that indicate that there could be some discharge to the sea between Maro (Málaga) and Almuñécar (Granada) and the Andalusian's Government and its Water Agence were really interested in evaluating it because there is a lot of population and few water available and the magnitude of groundwater discharge has generated controversy. Is well known that water is a scarce resource in this area and it's very important for the society and for the environment. The legislation, the water policies, the knowledge of the aquifer and the geology, the water dynamics, the land use and the water perception in the society might help the management of this resource not just in Andalusia but in all the Mediterranean basin. The main objective is to evaluate the submarine groundwater discharge from the Alberquillas Aqufier to the sea by measuring 222Rn and Ra isotopes. Specific objectives have been established to achieve the main objective: A) Reveal the importance of water resources in the Mediterranean basin; B) Learn radiometric techniques for the study of groundwater discharge to the sea; C) Learn of sampling techniques of water samples for the measurement of Ra and Rn; D) Learn the techniques for measuring Ra (RaDeCC) and Rn (RAD7); E) Interpretation and discussion of results. During this semester, and in addition of the present study in Málaga- Granada region, the author has participated in the initial phase (sampling, analysis and interpretation of preliminary results) of other research projects focused on the study of submarine groundwater discharges through the use of Ra isotopes and 222Rn. These studies have been developed in different areas, including Alt Empordà (Roses and Sant Pere Pescador), Maresme with CMIMA's group (Mediterranean Center for Marine and Environmental Research), Delta de l'Ebre, Peñíscola and Mallorca with the IMEDEA's group (Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies)
