    Study of time lags in HETE-2 Gamma-Ray Bursts with redshift: search for astrophysical effects and Quantum Gravity signature

    The study of time lags between spikes in Gamma-Ray Bursts light curves in different energy bands as a function of redshift may lead to the detection of effects due to Quantum Gravity. We present an analysis of 15 Gamma-Ray Bursts with measured redshift, detected by the HETE-2 mission between 2001 and 2006 in order to measure time lags related to astrophysical effects and search for Quantum Gravity signature in the framework of an extra-dimension string model. The use of photon-tagged data allows us to consider various energy ranges. Systematic effects due to selection and cuts are evaluated. No significant Quantum Gravity effect is detected from the study of the maxima of the light curves and a lower limit at 95% Confidence Level on the Quantum Gravity scale parameter of 3.2x10**15 GeV is set.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. v3: Error corrected in Eq. 1.     Seafood festivals for local development in Italy and Sweden

    PurposeThe paper focusses on festivals taking place in coastal regions whose central element is seafood. The purpose is to analyse the role of seafood festivals as potential tourist attractions for local development. The decision to focus on coastal areas is based on a perceived knowledge gap regarding the interactions between different sectors of the sea economy.Design/methodology/approachQualitative exploratory case studies of seafood festivals in Italy and Sweden have been performed using an analytical model. The participatory observation methodology contributed to a better understanding of the phenomenon.FindingsThe analysis shows the close relationship between seafood and tourism, and although it takes variable forms, food is a fundamental lever for maritime and coastal tourism and local development. Findings suggest that local food events can help strengthening gastronomic identities, despite there is a different articulation between tradition and marketing in the two countries.Research limitations/implicationsSince this paper represents an exploratory study of five seafood festivals, research needs to be extended and replicated before any findings can be generalized. However, the model is flexible enough to be tested in different food events.Practical implicationsFood events represent a key instrument for the integration of territorial policies in which tourism and food products might be used as strategic instruments for the development of coastal areas.Originality/valueThis paper is a first attempt to analyse and compare seafood events, contributing to filling the gap in event literature referring to coastal areas. The model introduced can be used to determine the articulation of tradition-marketing in different food events

    Detection of a fast, intense and unusual gamma ray transient

    An unusual transient pulse of approximately 50 keV was detected by the gamma-ray burst sensor network using nine space probes and satellites. Its characteristics are unlike those of the known variety of gamma-ray bursts and therefore suggest that it was formed either by a completely different origin species or in a very different manner.     Broad band X-ray spectral properties of Gamma-ray bursts with BeppoSAX

    In about one year, five gamma-ray bursts were simultaneously observed with the Wide Field Cameras and Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. From some of them X-ray afterglow emission has been clearly detected with the same satellite. In order to understand how GRB emission is related to the X-ray afterglow, we are performing a systematic study of the spectral properties of these events. We show that there exists a significantly higher abundanceof core-collapsesup ernovaeamong thecorre lated supernovae, but the subset of all correlated objects does not seem to be physically different from the whole set

    Observation of GRB 030131 with the INTEGRAL satellite

    A long Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) was detected with the instruments on board the INTEGRAL satellite on January 31 2003. Although most of the GRB, which lasted \sim150 seconds, occurred during a satellite slew, the automatic software of the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System was able to detect it in near-real time. Here we report the results obtained with the IBIS instrument, which detected GRB 030131 in the 15 keV - 200 keV energy range, and ESO/VLT observations of its optical transient. The burst displays a complex time profile with numerous peaks. The peak spectrum can be described by a single power law with photon index Γ\Gamma\simeq1.7 and has a flux of \sim2 photons cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} in the 20-200 keV energy band. The high sensitivity of IBIS has made it possible for the first time to perform detailed time-resolved spectroscopy of a GRB with a fluence of 7×106\times10^{-6} erg cm2^{-2} (20-200 keV).Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 5 pages, 4 figures, late

    The Role of CT Scanning in Multidimensional Phenotyping of COPD

    BackgroundCOPD is a heterogeneous disease characterized by airflow obstruction and diagnosed by lung function. CT imaging is emerging as an important, noninvasive tool in phenotyping COPD. However, the use of CT imaging in defining the disease heterogeneity above lung function is not fully known.MethodsSeventy-five patients with COPD (58 men, 17 women) were studied with CT imaging and with measures of airway inflammation. Airway physiology and health status were also determined.ResultsThe presence of emphysema (EM), bronchiectasis (BE), and bronchial wall thickening (BWT) was found in 67%, 27%, and 27% of subjects, respectively. The presence of EM was associated with lower lung function (mean difference % FEV1, −20%; 95% CI, −28 to −11; P < .001). There was no difference in airway inflammation, exacerbation frequency, or bacterial load in patients with EM alone or with BE and/or BWT ± EM. The diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide/alveolar volume ratio was the most sensitive and specific parameter in identifying EM (area under the receiver operator characteristic curve, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.79-0.96). Physiologic cluster analysis identified three clusters, two of which were EM predominant and the third characterized by a heterogeneous combination of EM and BE.ConclusionsThe application of CT imaging can be useful as a tool in the multidimensional approach to phenotyping patients with COPD

    We present the results obtained by INTEGRAL on the Soft-Gamma Ray Repeater SGR 1806-20.
