The objective of this study was evaluate the maintenance of the corneal endothelium of horses in cold EUSOL-C® preservation medium over different periods (seven and 14 days) using scanning electron microscopy. A total of 20 pairs of eyes from horses were analysed. The corneas were divided into four groups of 10 corneas each (G1, G2, G3 and G4): G1 - the samples were kept in the preservation medium for seven days; G3 - the samples were kept in the preservation medium for for 14 days; G2 and G4 were formed by the control corneal buttons of G1 and G3, respectively. The average cell loss observed in G1 was 7.62%, in G2 it was 7.04%, in G3 9.12% and in G4 7.16%. No statistically significant differences were observed between the four groups. It was concluded that the Eusol-C® hypothermic preservation medium provided satisfactory preservation of the corneal endothelium in equine species for up to 14 days.

The correspondence of Giovanni Santini and Giuseppe Lorenzoni, directors of the Astronomical Observatory of Padua in the 19th century

Giovanni Santini was appointed director of the Astronomical Observatory of Padova from 1817 to 1877. His scientific correspondence covers a period from 1807 to 1874. Most of the letters are from Italian and European astronomers, mainly concerning astronomical subjects. In actual fact, all Santini’s activity was devoted to the classical astronomy, mainly to the new comets and planets orbit calculation, as far as to the compilation of a catalogue of almost ten thousand stars. From 1821 to 1828, he was involved in geodetic observations in order to determine the difference of longitude between Milan-Padua and Padua-Fiume. Giuseppe Lorenzoni was appointed director after Santini’s death, from 1877 to 1913. Since 1873, he took part in the Italian Geodetic Commission to which he devoted almost all his scientific activity. Lorenzoni’s scientific correspondence was partly lost for war reasons. A partial correspondence with Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli and almost the complete correspondence with Pietro Tacchini, were recovered after the second World War. Santini and Lorenzoni correspondence cover a period about a hundred years long. So, it is an important tool of knowledge for the history of Padova Astronomical Observatory in the 19th century, for its scientific activity, and for the relationship among Italian and European astronomers and institutions

The study aimed to evaluate the nutritional, glycemic and insulin profile and insulin resistance from children and adolescents "Balance Food Project" in Santa Maria - RS. Eighty seven participants between 5 and 16 years, of both sexes were evaluated. The data obtained were: anthropometric measures (weight and height), the input and output or the last evaluation, blood glucose and fasting insulin and BMI was calculated. We conducted the nutritional classification, the evolution of BMI, insulin and glucose profile, the evaluation of the criterion of 100mg/dl glucose and insulin as criteria> 15 ÎĽUI / ml, we calculated the HOMA IR and the relation between glucose / insulin, compared to four parameters of peripheral insulin resistance: HOMA IR, fasting insulin, glucose ratio / Point insulin and fasting insulin cut by De Almeida (2008). There was predominance of females (56.3%), the age group between 9 and 10 years (39.1%), and obese (86.2%) reduction in BMI (65.5%) of glucose normal fasting (98.8%), blood glucose values between 80 and 89 mg / dl (48.3%) and above 25 ÎĽUI insulin / ml for 31% of the participants. Insulin resistance was positive: HOMA IR (46%), fasting insulin <15ÎĽUI/ml (57.5%), Glucose-insulin ratio (69%), and cutoffs for fasting insulin De Almeida (2008) (78%). The project was effective in controlling weight. Childhood obesity is already producing comorbidities. It is necessary to spread the Food Balance Project in Santa Maria, RS

Evaluation of right ventricular function performed by 3d-echocardiography in scleroderma patients

    Get PDF
The impairment of the right ventricle (RV) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is usually related to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). New echocardiographic techniques, such as 3-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) and 2-dimensional speckle tracking (2DSTE), allow an accurate evaluation of the RV function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the RV function using 3DE and 2DSTE in SSc patients with no history of heart disease and no PAH. Forty-five SSc patients, 42 females and 3 males, 28 with limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) and 17 with diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), were studied. Forty-three age- and gender-matched healthy subjects were enrolled as controls. All of them underwent a 3DE and 2DSTE ecocardiographic evaluation of the RV function. Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) and total pulmonary vascular resistance (tPVR) were also estimated by power doppler. RV echocardiographic parameters were compared in the different subsets of SSc patients. A statistical analysis was performed by t-test, ANOVA and multiple logistic regression. RV areas in 2DSTE and volumes in 3DE were higher and RV function parameters were reduced in SSc patients compared with controls. Also sPAP and tVPR were higher, but they did not reach pathological values. Echocardiographic alterations were more pronounced in patients with lcSSc. 3DE and 2DSTE echocardiography allowed us to detect morphological and functional alterations of the RV in a group of SSc patients with no clinical signs of heart disease and no PAH. These patients had significantly higher sPAP and tPVR than healthy controls without reporting values compatible with PAH. These data suggest that RV alterations are related to a pressure overload rather than to an intrinsic myocardial involvement in SSc

This article has the main objective of analyzing the internationalization process of Brazilian companies that operate in the animal protein sector (beef, pork, and poultry) from the year 2000 and the role of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) in this process. The article was developed using a qualitative methodological approach by adhering to procedures of a bibliographical and documental survey; the data published in annual reports from companies from the animal protein sector, listed in BM&FBOVESPA, were analyzed, as well as data from the annual reports from BNDES. The main strategy implemented by Brazilian companies to obtain access to major world markets has been the diversification of performance in the production chain through the acquisition of companies (processing industries and distributors) in producing countries that do not face great resistance for export (Uruguay, Argentina, Australia) and in the major markets (U.S. and Europe). These companies are funded directly or indirectly with BNDES resources.
