Internet in a Sectarian Islamic Context
The Lebanon-based al-Ahbash movement advocates a radical neo-traditionalist version of Sunni Islam. Although numerically modest, it has established branches in several Western countries, where it continues the campaign it started in the Middle East against the Salafi trend. The movement uses the Internet innovatively and demonstrates that the strategic use of web-based interactive communication tools does not necessarily lead to the reinforcement of a culture of dialogue; on the contrary they can also serve as a means to achieve virtual ideological hegemony
Theoretical study of isolated dangling bonds, dangling bond wires and dangling bond clusters on H:Si(100)-(21) surface
We theoretically study the electronic band structure of isolated unpaired and
paired dangling bonds (DB), DB wires and DB clusters on H:Si(100)-(21)
surface using Extended H\"uckel Theory (EHT) and report their effect on the Si
band gap. An isolated unpaired DB introduces a near-midgap state, whereas a
paired DB leads to and states, similar to those introduced by an
unpassivated asymmetric dimer (AD) Si(100)-(21) surface. Such induced
states have very small dispersion due to their isolation from the other states,
which reside in conduction and valence band. On the other hand, the surface
state induced due to an unpaired DB wire in the direction along the dimer row
(referred to as ), has large dispersion due to the strong coupling
between the adjacent DBs, being 3.84 apart. However, in the direction
perpendicular to the dimer row (referred to as [110]), due to the reduced
coupling between the DBs being 7.68 apart, the dispersion in the surface
state is similar to that of an isolated unpaired DB. Apart from this, a paired
DB wire in direction introduces and states similar
to those of an AD surface and a paired DB wire in [110] direction exhibits
surface states similar to those of an isolated paired DB, as expected. Besides
this, we report the electronic structure of different DB clusters, which
exhibit states inside the band gap that can be interpreted as superpositions of
states due to unpaired and paired DBs.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure, 1 tabl
Orientation-dependent perimeter recombination in GaAs diodes
Perimeter recombination currents affect the performance of GaAs-based devices such as solar cells, heterojunction bipolar transistors, and injection lasers. We report that the n SEf 2 perimeter recombination current has a strong orientation dependence. More than a factor of five variation in the surface recombination current at mesa-etched edges has been observed. These results suggest that with proper device design, perimeter recombination currents could be substantially reduced
Predictors of indoor absolute humidity and estimated effects on influenza virus survival in grade schools
Background: Low absolute humidity (AH) has been associated with increased influenza virus survival and transmissibility and the onset of seasonal influenza outbreaks. Humidification of indoor environments may mitigate viral transmission and may be an important control strategy, particularly in schools where viral transmission is common and contributes to the spread of influenza in communities. However, the variability and predictors of AH in the indoor school environment and the feasibility of classroom humidification to levels that could decrease viral survival have not been studied. Methods: Automated sensors were used to measure temperature, humidity and CO2 levels in two Minnesota grade schools without central humidification during two successive winters. Outdoor AH measurements were derived from the North American Land Data Assimilation System. Variability in indoor AH within classrooms, between classrooms in the same school, and between schools was assessed using concordance correlation coefficients (CCC). Predictors of indoor AH were examined using time-series Auto-Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity models. Classroom humidifiers were used when school was not in session to assess the feasibility of increasing indoor AH to levels associated with decreased influenza virus survival, as projected from previously published animal experiments. Results: AH varied little within classrooms (CCC >0.90) but was more variable between classrooms in the same school (CCC 0.81 for School 1, 0.88 for School 2) and between schools (CCC 0.81). Indoor AH varied widely during the winter (range 2.60 to 10.34 millibars [mb]) and was strongly associated with changes in outdoor AH (p < 0.001). Changes in indoor AH on school weekdays were strongly associated with CO2 levels (p < 0.001). Over 4 hours, classroom humidifiers increased indoor AH by 4 mb, an increase sufficient to decrease projected 1-hour virus survival by an absolute value of 30% during winter months. Conclusions: During winter, indoor AH in non-humidified grade schools varies substantially and often to levels that are very low. Indoor results are predicted by outdoor AH over a season and CO2 levels (which likely reflects human activity) during individual school days. Classroom humidification may be a feasible approach to increase indoor AH to levels that may decrease influenza virus survival and transmission
Knowledge formalization in experience feedback processes : an ontology-based approach
Because of the current trend of integration and interoperability of industrial systems, their size and complexity continue to grow making it more difficult to analyze, to understand and to solve the problems that happen in their organizations. Continuous improvement methodologies are powerful tools in order to understand and to solve problems, to control the effects of changes and finally to capitalize knowledge about changes and improvements. These tools involve suitably represent knowledge relating to the concerned system. Consequently, knowledge management (KM) is an increasingly important source of competitive advantage for organizations. Particularly, the capitalization and sharing of knowledge resulting from experience feedback are elements which play an essential role in the continuous improvement of industrial activities. In this paper, the contribution deals with semantic interoperability and relates to the structuring and the formalization of an experience feedback (EF) process aiming at transforming information or understanding gained by experience into explicit knowledge. The reuse of such knowledge has proved to have significant impact on achieving themissions of companies. However, the means of describing the knowledge objects of an experience generally remain informal. Based on an experience feedback process model and conceptual graphs, this paper takes domain ontology as a framework for the clarification of explicit knowledge and know-how, the aim of which is to get lessons learned descriptions that are significant, correct and applicable
Whole-Genome Assemblies of 16 Burkholderia pseudomallei Isolates from Rivers in Laos.
We report 16 Burkholderia pseudomallei genomes, including 5 new multilocus sequence types, isolated from rivers in Laos. The environmental bacterium B. pseudomallei causes melioidosis, a serious infectious disease in tropical and subtropical regions. The isolates are geographically clustered in one clade from around Vientiane, Laos, and one clade from further south
Generic nano-imprint process for fabrication of nanowire arrays
A generic process has been developed to grow nearly defect free arrays of
(heterostructured) InP and GaP nanowires. Soft nanoimprint lithography has been
used to pattern gold particle arrays on full 2 inch substrates. After lift-off
organic residues remain on the surface, which induce the growth of additional
undesired nanowires. We show that cleaning of the samples before growth with
piranha solution in combination with a thermal anneal at 550 C for InP and 700
C for GaP results in uniform nanowire arrays with 1% variation in nanowire
length, and without undesired extra nanowires. Our chemical cleaning procedure
is applicable to other lithographic techniques such as e-beam lithography, and
therefore represents a generic process.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Direct observation and control of near-field radiative energy transfer in a natural hyperbolic material
Heat control is a key issue in nano-electronics, where new efficient energy
transfer mechanisms are highly sought after. In this respect, there is indirect
evidence that high-mobility hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-encapsulated graphene
exhibits hyperbolic out-of-plane radiative energy transfer when driven
out-of-equilibrium. Here we directly observe radiative energy transfer due to
the hyperbolic phonon polaritons modes of the hBN encapsulant in intrinsic
graphene devices under large bias, using mid-infrared spectroscopy and
pyrometry. By using different hBN crystals of varied crystalline quality, we
engineer the energy transfer efficiency, a key asset for compact thermal
management of electronic circuits.Comment: 21 pages including Supplementary Material (Main text: 10 pages, 4
