Non-Fermi Liquid behavior at the Orbital Ordering Quantum Critical Point in the Two-Orbital Model
The critical behavior of a two-orbital model with degenerate and
orbitals is investigated by multidimensional bosonization. We find
that the corresponding bosonic theory has an overdamped collective mode with
dynamical exponent , which appears to be a general feature of a
two-orbital model and becomes the dominant fluctuation in the vicinity of the
orbital-ordering quantum critical point. Since the very existence of this
overdamped collective mode induces non-Fermi liquid behavior near the quantum
critical point, we conclude that a two-orbital model generally has a sizable
area in the phase diagram showing non-Fermi liquid behavior. Furthermore, we
show that the bosonic theory resembles the continuous model near the d-wave
Pomeranchuk instability, suggesting that orbital order in a two-orbital model
is identical to nematic order in a continuous model. Our results can be applied
to systems with degenerate and orbitals such as iron-based
superconductors and bilayer strontium ruthenates SrRuO.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Pomeranchuk Instability in a non-Fermi Liquid from Holography
The Pomeranchuk instability, in which an isotropic Fermi surface distorts and
becomes anisotropic due to strong interactions, is a possible mechanism for the
growing number of experimental systems which display transport properties that
differ along the and axes. We show here that the gauge-gravity duality
can be used to describe such an instability in fermionic systems. Our
holographic model consists of fermions in a background which describes the
causal propagation of a massive neutral spin-two field in an asymptotically AdS
spacetime. The Fermi surfaces in the boundary theory distort spontaneously and
become anisotropic once the neutral massive spin-two field develops a
normalizable mode in the bulk. Analysis of the fermionic correlators reveals
that the low-lying fermionic excitations are non-Fermi liquid-like both before
and after the Fermi surface shape distortion. Further, the spectral weight
along the Fermi surface is angularly dependent and can be made to vanish along

National quality indicators and policies from 15 countries leading in adult end-of-life care: A systematic environmental scan

Background: The importance of measuring the quality of end-of-life care provision is undisputed, but determining how best to achieve this is yet to be confirmed. This study sought to identify and describe national end-of-life care quality indicators and supporting policies used by countries leading in their end-of-life care provision. Methods: A systematic environmental scan that included a web search to identify relevant national policies and indicators; hand searching for additional materials; information from experts listed for the top 10 (n=15) countries ranked in the 'quality of care' category of the 2015 Quality of Death Index study; and snowballing from Index experts. Findings: Ten countries (66%) have national policy support for end-of-life care measurement, five have national indicator sets, with two indicator sets suitable for all service providers. No countries mandate indicator use, and there is limited evidence of consumer engagement in development of indicators. Two thirds of the 128 identified indicators are outcomes measures (62%), and 38% are process measures. Most indicators pertain to symptom management (38%), social care (32%) or care delivery (27%). Interpretations: Measurement of end-of-life care quality varies globally and rarely covers all care domains or service providers. There is a need to reduce duplication of indicator development, involve consumers, consider all care providers and ensure measurable and relevant indicators to improve end-of-life care experiences for patients and families

'I Once Stared at Myself in the Mirror for Eleven Hours.' Exploring mirror gazing in participants with body dysmorphic disorder
This study provides insight into the lived experience of mirror gazing using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and Photo Elicitation. A total of 10 participants who identified themselves as suffering from body dysmorphic disorder took photographs that related to their body dysmorphic disorder experience. Photographs were discussed in interviews. It was found that mirror gazing in body dysmorphic disorder is an embodied phenomenon. Motivations for mirror gazing were confusing, complex and masochistic. Overall, participants described mirrors as being controlling, imprisoning and disempowering forces that had a crippling and paralysing effect on life. It is argued that health psychologists must ask clients about their embodied experiences when looking in the mirror
Role of the mesoamygdaloid dopamine projection in emotional learning
Amygdala dopamine is crucially involved in the acquisition of Pavlovian associations, as measured via conditioned approach to the location of the unconditioned stimulus (US). However, learning begins before skeletomotor output, so this study assessed whether amygdala dopamine is also involved in earlier 'emotional' learning. A variant of the conditioned reinforcement (CR) procedure was validated where training was restricted to curtail the development of selective conditioned approach to the US location, and effects of amygdala dopamine manipulations before training or later CR testing assessed. Experiment 1a presented a light paired (CS+ group) or unpaired (CS- group) with a US. There were 1, 2 or 10 sessions, 4 trials per session. Then, the US was removed, and two novel levers presented. One lever (CR+) presented the light, and lever pressing was recorded. Experiment 1b also included a tone stimulus. Experiment 2 applied intra-amygdala R(+) 7-OH-DPAT (10 nmol/1.0 A mu l/side) before two training sessions (Experiment 2a) or a CR session (Experiment 2b). For Experiments 1a and 1b, the CS+ group preferred the CR+ lever across all sessions. Conditioned alcove approach during 1 or 2 training sessions or associated CR tests was low and nonspecific. In Experiment 2a, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT before training greatly diminished lever pressing during a subsequent CR test, preferentially on the CR+ lever. For Experiment 2b, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT infusions before the CR test also reduced lever pressing. Manipulations of amygdala dopamine impact the earliest stage of learning in which emotional reactions may be most prevalent
Tethered N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Carboranyl Silver Complexes for Cancer Therapy
Silver complexes of tethered N-heterocyclic carbene-carboranyl ligands have been prepared and fully characterized. The first example of silver bonded directly to the cage of o-carborane has been identified in the solid state. The presence of a carboranyl N substituent on the N-heterocyclic carbene significantly enhances the in vitro cytotoxicity of the silver complex against HCT116 p53+/+ and HCT116 p53–/– colon cancer cells in comparison to a phenyl derivative. Conversely, the presence of a carboranyl on the backbone of a xanthine-derived N-heterocyclic carbene decreases the in vitro cytotoxicity of the silver complex in comparison to its phenyl derivative. Stability studies on the xanthine-derived ligands and complexes show that decomposition via deboronation occurs in hydrous dimethyl sulfoxide, which may attribute to the contrasting in vitro behaviors of the carborane-containing complexes
Genetic Diversity of PCR-Positive, Culture-Negative and Culture-Positive Mycobacterium ulcerans Isolated from Buruli Ulcer Patients in Ghana.
Culture of Mycobacterium ulcerans from Buruli ulcer patients has very low sensitivity. Thus confirmation of M. ulcerans infection is primarily based on PCR directed against IS2404. In this study we compare the genotypes obtained by variable number of tandem repeat analysis of DNA from IS2404-PCR positive cultures with that obtained from IS2404 positive, culture-negative tissue. A significantly greater genetic heterogeneity was found among culture-negative samples compared with that found in cultured strains but a single genotype is over-represented in both sample sets. This study provides evidence that both the focal location of bacteria in a lesion as well as differences in the ability to culture a particular genotype may underlie the low sensitivity of culture. Though preliminary, data from this work also suggests that mycobacteria previously associated with fish disease (M. pseudoshottsii) may be pathogenic for humans
