One-Loop Renormalization of Lorentz-Violating Electrodynamics
We show that the general Lorentz- and CPT-violating extension of quantum
electrodynamics is one-loop renormalizable. The one-loop Lorentz-violating beta
functions are obtained, and the running of the coefficients for Lorentz and CPT
violation is determined. Some implications for theory and experiment are

Independent Emission and Absorption Abundances for Planetary Nebulae
Emission-line abundances have been uncertain for more than a decade due to
unexplained discrepancies in the relative intensities of the forbidden lines
and weak permitted recombination lines in planetary nebulae (PNe) and H II
regions. The observed intensities of forbidden and recombination lines
originating from the same parent ion differ from their theoretical values by
factors of more than an order of magnitude in some of these nebulae. In this
study we observe UV resonance line absorption in the central stars of PNe
produced by the nebular gas, and from the same ions that emit optical forbidden
lines. We then compare the derived absorption column densities with the
emission measures determined from ground-based observations of the nebular
forbidden lines. We find for our sample of PNe that the collisionally excited
forbidden lines yield column densities that are in basic agreement with the
column densities derived for the same ions from the UV absorption lines. A
similar comparison involving recombination line column densities produces
poorer agreement, although near the limits of the formal uncertainties of the
analyses. An additional sample of objects with larger abundance discrepancy
factors will need to be studied before a stronger statement can be made that

Three-dimensional, multifunctional neural interfaces for cortical spheroids and engineered assembloids.
Three-dimensional (3D), submillimeter-scale constructs of neural cells, known as cortical spheroids, are of rapidly growing importance in biological research because these systems reproduce complex features of the brain in vitro. Despite their great potential for studies of neurodevelopment and neurological disease modeling, 3D living objects cannot be studied easily using conventional approaches to neuromodulation, sensing, and manipulation. Here, we introduce classes of microfabricated 3D frameworks as compliant, multifunctional neural interfaces to spheroids and to assembloids. Electrical, optical, chemical, and thermal interfaces to cortical spheroids demonstrate some of the capabilities. Complex architectures and high-resolution features highlight the design versatility. Detailed studies of the spreading of coordinated bursting events across the surface of an isolated cortical spheroid and of the cascade of processes associated with formation and regrowth of bridging tissues across a pair of such spheroids represent two of the many opportunities in basic neuroscience research enabled by these platforms
End of life care: The experiences of advance care planning amongst family caregivers of people with advanced dementia - A qualitative study
Background: End of life decisions for people with advanced dementia are reported as often being difficult for families as they attempt to make appropriate and justified decisions.
Aim: To explore the experiences of advance care planning amongst family caregivers of people with advanced dementia.
Design: Qualitative research including a series of single cases (close family relatives).
Methods: A purposive sample of 12 family caregivers within a specialist dementia unit was interviewed about their experiences of advance care planning between August 2009 and February 2010.
Results/Findings: Family caregivers need encouragement to ask the right questions during advance care planning to discuss the appropriateness of nursing and medical interventions at the end of life.
Conclusions: Advance care planning can be facilitated with the family caregiver in the context of everyday practice within the nursing home environment for older people with dementia
Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations of SN 1990E in NGC 1035: Observational Constraints for Models of Type II Supernovae
We present 126 photometric and 30 spectral observation of SN 1990E spanning from 12 days before B maximum to 600 days past discovery. These observations show that SN 1990E was of type II-P, displaying hydrogen in its spectrum, and the characteristic plateau in its light curve. SN 1990E is one of the few SNe II which has been well observed before maximum light, and we present evidence that this SN was discovered very soon after its explosion. In the earliest spectra we identify, for the first time, several N II lines. We present a new technique for measuring extinction to SNe II based on the evolution of absorption lines, and use this method to estimate the extinction to SN 1990E, Av=1.5+/-0.3 mag. From our photometric data we have constructed a bolometric light curve for SN 1990E and show that, even at the earliest times, the bolometric luminosity was falling rapidly. We use the late-time bolometric light curve to show that SN 1990E trapped a majority of the gamma rays produced by the radioactive decay of 56Co, and estimate that SN 1990E ejected 0.073 Mo of 56Ni, an amount virtually identical to that of SN 1987A. Natural Band Alignments and Band Offsets of Sb2Se3 Solar Cells
Sb2Se3 is a promising material for use in photovoltaics, but the optimum device structure has not yet been identified. This study provides band alignment measurements between Sb2Se3, identical to that used in high-efficiency photovoltaic devices, and its two most commonly used window layers, namely, CdS and TiO2. Band alignments are measured via two different approaches: Anderson’s rule was used to predict an interface band alignment from measured natural band alignments, and the Kraut method was used in conjunction with hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy to directly measure the band offsets at the interface. This allows examination of the effect of interface formation on the band alignments. The conduction band minimum (CBM) of TiO2 is found by the Kraut method to lie 0.82 eV below that of Sb2Se3, whereas the CdS CBM is only 0.01 eV below that of Sb2Se3. Furthermore, a significant difference is observed between the natural alignment- and Kraut method-determined offsets for TiO2/Sb2Se3, whereas there is little difference for CdS/Sb2Se3. Finally, these results are related to device performance, taking into consideration how these results may guide the future development of Sb2Se3 solar cells and providing a methodology that can be used to assess band alignments in device-relevant systems
Ecosystem Resilience and Threshold Response in the Galápagos Coastal Zone
Background: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides a conservative estimate on rates of sea-level rise of 3.8 mm yr⁻¹ at the end of the 21st century, which may have a detrimental effect on ecologically important mangrove ecosystems. Understanding factors influencing the long-term resilience of these communities is critical but poorly understood. We investigate ecological resilience in a coastal mangrove community from the Galápagos Islands over the last 2700 years using three research questions: What are the 'fast and slow' processes operating in the coastal zone? Is there evidence for a threshold response? How can the past inform us about the resilience of the modern system?Methodology/Principal Findings: Palaeoecological methods (AMS radiocarbon dating, stable carbon isotopes (δ13C)) were used to reconstruct sedimentation rates and ecological change over the past 2,700 years at Diablas lagoon, Isabela, Galápagos. Bulk geochemical analysis was also used to determine local environmental changes, and salinity was reconstructed using a diatom transfer function. Changes in relative sea level (RSL) were estimated using a glacio-isostatic adjustment model. Non-linear behaviour was observed in the Diablas mangrove ecosystem as it responded to increased salinities following exposure to tidal inundations. A negative feedback was observed which enabled the mangrove canopy to accrete vertically, but disturbances may have opened up the canopy and contributed to an erosion of resilience over time. A combination of drier climatic conditions and a slight fall in RSL then resulted in a threshold response, from a mangrove community to a microbial mat.Conclusions/Significance: Palaeoecological records can provide important information on the nature of non-linear behaviour by identifying thresholds within ecological systems, and in outlining responses to 'fast and slow' environmental change between alternative stable states. This study highlights the need to incorporate a long-term ecological perspective when designing strategies for maximizing coastal resilience.</p

Organizational Discourse: Domains, Debates, and Directions
Interest in the analysis of organizational discourse has expanded rapidly over the last two decades. In this article, we reflect critically on organizational discourse analysis as an approach to the study of organizations and management, highlighting both its strengths and areas of challenge. We begin with an explanation of the nature of organizational discourse analysis and outline some of the more significant contributions made to date. We then discuss existing classifications of approaches to the study of organizational discourse and suggest that they fall into two main categories: classifications by level of analysis and classifications by type of method. We argue that both of these approaches are inherently problematic and present an alternative way to understand the varieties of approaches to the analysis of organizational discourse based on within domain and across domain characterizations. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges that remain in the development of organizational discourse as an area of study and point to some of the opportunities for important and unique contributions to our understanding of organizations and management that this family of methods brings. © 2012 Copyright Academy of Management
