    Taxonomy and chemical characterization of antibiotics of Streptosporangium Sg 10 isolated from a Saharan soil

    A new actinomycete strain designated Sg 10, producing antimicrobial substances was isolated from an Algerian soil. Morphological and chemical studies indicated that strain Sg 10 belonged to the genus Streptosporangium. The comparison of its physiological characteristics with those of known species of Streptosporangium showed significant differences with the nearest species Streptosporangium carneum. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence of strain Sg 10 showed a similarity level ranging between 96.3% and 97.8% within Streptosporangium species, with S. carneum the most closely related. However, the phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain Sg 10 represent a distinct phyletic line suggesting a new genomic species. The antimicrobial activity of strain Sg 10 showed an antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria as well as an antifungal one. Four active products were isolated from the culture broth using various separation procedures. On the basis of UV-VIS spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and chemical revelations, the antibiotics were classified in the group of glycosylated aromatics

    Coronaviruses (CoVs) are important human and animal pathogens that induce fatal respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological disease. The outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002/2003 has demonstrated human vulnerability to (Coronavirus) CoV epidemics. Neither vaccines nor therapeutics are available against human and animal CoVs. Knowledge of host cell proteins that take part in pivotal virus-host interactions could define broad-spectrum antiviral targets. In this study, we used a systems biology approach employing a genome-wide yeast-two hybrid interaction screen to identify immunopilins (PPIA, PPIB, PPIH, PPIG, FKBP1A, FKBP1B) as interaction partners of the CoV non-structural protein 1 (Nsp1). These molecules modulate the Calcineurin/NFAT pathway that plays an important role in immune cell activation. Overexpression of NSP1 and infection with live SARS-CoV strongly increased signalling through the Calcineurin/NFAT pathway and enhanced the induction of interleukin 2, compatible with late-stage immunopathogenicity and long-term cytokine dysregulation as observed in severe SARS cases. Conversely, inhibition of cyclophilins by cyclosporine A (CspA) blocked the replication of CoVs of all genera, including SARS-CoV, human CoV-229E and -NL-63, feline CoV, as well as avian infectious bronchitis virus. Non-immunosuppressive derivatives of CspA might serve as broad-range CoV inhibitors applicable against emerging CoVs as well as ubiquitous pathogens of humans and livestock

    Do red deer stags (Cervus elaphus) use roar fundamental frequency (F0) to assess rivals?

    It is well established that in humans, male voices are disproportionately lower pitched than female voices, and recent studies suggest that this dimorphism in fundamental frequency (F0) results from both intrasexual (male competition) and intersexual (female mate choice) selection for lower pitched voices in men. However, comparative investigations indicate that sexual dimorphism in F0 is not universal in terrestrial mammals. In the highly polygynous and sexually dimorphic Scottish red deer Cervus elaphus scoticus, more successful males give sexually-selected calls (roars) with higher minimum F0s, suggesting that high, rather than low F0s advertise quality in this subspecies. While playback experiments demonstrated that oestrous females prefer higher pitched roars, the potential role of roar F0 in male competition remains untested. Here we examined the response of rutting red deer stags to playbacks of re-synthesized male roars with different median F0s. Our results show that stags’ responses (latencies and durations of attention, vocal and approach responses) were not affected by the F0 of the roar. This suggests that intrasexual selection is unlikely to strongly influence the evolution of roar F0 in Scottish red deer stags, and illustrates how the F0 of terrestrial mammal vocal sexual signals may be subject to different selection pressures across species. Further investigations on species characterized by different F0 profiles are needed to provide a comparative background for evolutionary interpretations of sex differences in mammalian vocalizations

    Die vorliegende Dissertation beleuchtet das heterogene Hedgingverhalten von Fluggesellschaften. Hierbei liegt der Fokus auf finanziellem, operationellem und selektivem Hedging. Der unsymmetrische Panel-Datensatz beinhaltet 74 Fluggesellschaften aus 39 Ländern. Der Analysezeitraum umfasst die Jahre 2005 bis 2014, was insgesamt in 621 Geschäftsjahren resultiert. Die Random-Effects-Probit und Fixed-Effects-OLS-Modelle lassen die Schlussfolgerung eines konvexen Zusammenhanges zwischen dem Einsatz von Finanzinstrumenten und dem Verschuldungsgrad eines Unternehmens zu. Dieser Zusammenhang steht in gegensätzlicher Richtung zu der Financial-Distress-Theorie von absichernden Unternehmen. Fluggesellschaften mit einem geringeren Verschuldungsgrad wiesen höhere Sicherungsquoten auf. Zusätzlich belegen die Ergebnisse, dass Fluggesellschaften, die Zins- und Währungsderivate hielten, mit höherer Wahrscheinlichkeit auch Kerosinpreise mit Derivaten absicherten. Des Weiteren zeigen die Studienergebnisse, dass operationelles Hedging als Komplement zu finanziellem Hedging betrachtet werden kann. Fluggesellschaften mit einer heterogeneren Flottenstruktur präsentierten höhere Sicherungsquoten. Zudem gehörten Fluggesellschaften, die Mitglied einer strategischen Allianz waren, mit höherer Wahrscheinlichkeit zu den absichernden Fluggesellschaften. Da Allianz-Fluggesellschaften als eher finanziell solide bezeichnet werden können, reflektiert die positive Beziehung zwischen Allianzzugehörigkeit und Hedging die negativen Ergebnisse des Verschuldungsgrades. Letztlich legt die Studie Einflussfaktoren auf das selektive Absicherungsverhalten dar. Vorausgegangene, ergebniswirksame Verluste hatten eine Anpassung der Sicherungsquote zur Folge. Darüber hinaus zeigten die Fluggesellschaften Herdenverhalten, da sie auf Erhöhungen oder Verringerungen im Sicherungsportfolio ihrer Wettbewerber mit Anpassungen in gleicher Richtung reagierten.This thesis sheds light on the heterogeneous hedging behavior of airlines. The focus lies on financial hedging, operational hedging and selective hedging. The unbalanced panel data set includes 74 airlines from 39 countries. The period of analysis is 2005 until 2014, resulting in 621 firm years. The random effects probit and fixed effects OLS models provide strong evidence of a convex relation between derivative usage and a firm’s leverage, opposing the existing financial distress theory. Airlines with lower leverage had higher hedge ratios. In addition, the results show that airlines with interest rate and currency derivatives were more likely to engage in fuel price hedging. Moreover, the study results support the argument that operational hedging is a complement to financial hedging. Airlines with more heterogeneous fleet structures exhibited higher hedge ratios. Also, airlines which were members of a strategic alliance were more likely to be hedging airlines. As alliance airlines are rather financially sound airlines, the positive relation between alliance membership and hedging reflects the negative results on the leverage ratio. Lastly, the study presents determinants of an airlines’ selective hedging behavior. Airlines with prior-period derivative losses, recognized in income, changed their hedge portfolios more frequently. Moreover, the sample airlines acted in accordance with herd behavior theory. Changes in the regional hedge portfolios influenced the hedge portfolio of the individual airline in the same direction

    Early age exposure to moisture damage and systemic inflammation at the age of 6 years

    Cross-sectional studies have shown that exposure to indoor moisture damage and mold may be associated with subclinical inflammation. Our aim was to determine whether early age exposure to moisture damage or mold is prospectively associated with subclinical systemic inflammation or with immune responsiveness in later childhood. Home inspections were performed in children's homes in the first year of life. At age 6 years, subclinical systemic inflammation was measured by serum C-reactive protein(CRP) and blood leucocytes and immune responsiveness by ex vivo production of interleukin 1-beta(IL-1beta), IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-alpha) in whole blood cultures without stimulation or after 24h stimulation with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and ionomycin(PI), lipopolysaccharide(LPS) or peptidoglycan(PPG) in 251 to 270 children. Moisture damage in child's main living areas in infancy was not significantly associated with elevated levels of CRP or leucocytes at 6 years. In contrast, there was some suggestion for an effect on immune responsiveness, as moisture damage with visible mold was positively associated with LPS-stimulated production of TNF-alpha and minor moisture damage was inversely associated with PI-stimulated IL-1beta. While early life exposure to mold damage may have some influence on later immune responsiveness, it does not seem to increase subclinical systemic inflammation in later life.
