    The hyperfine structure of the rotational transition J = 2 ← 1 in the vicinity of 9.8 GHz was measured. The analysis yielded the following quadrupole coupling constants: e qv Q (79Br)= 105.78(34) + 0.92(38) (υ +1/2) MHz, e qv Q (81Br) = 88.55 (35) + 0.60 (32) (υ +1/2) MHz, e qv Q (69Ga) = − 86.68 (30) + 0.36 (24) (υ +1/2) MHz, e qv Q (71Ga) = − 54.58 (25) MHz. These results are consistent with systematic trends in the group of (III a/VII a) -compounds and remove some discrepencies in the literature. © 1978, Walter de Gruyter. All rights reserved

    Contextual pedagogy : the didactics of pedagogical emancipation within the context of disempowered and marginalised societies

    The thesis deals with the theoretic concept of Contextual Pedagogy and its application in the context of a disempowered and marginalized society, the Ju/'hoansi ("Bushmen") of Nyae Nyae in North Eastern Namibia. Contextual Pedagogy derives from the notion of Contextual Theology and is thus initially based on a pedagogical analysis of the KAI ROS-Document, whereby its sociopolitical content and its inherent methodology are being transferred into a context of pedagogy. Referring to theoretical concepts of Critical Theory and Liberation Pedagogy, Conditional Fields are being identified in a first analysis which determine and explain the pedagogical situation in a colonial context of Apartheid South Africa. During a three-year qualitative field research, central aspects of Contextual Pedagogy are being applied within the framework of the development of a post-colonial and community-based school programme in Nyae Nyae, the Village Schools Project. This school programme comprises a curriculum for a teacher training course as well as a curriculum for Grade 1-3 learners in five selected villages of Nyae Nyae, and is based on the dynamic processes between the communities, the Student Teachers and the author as their Teacher Trainer and Village Schools Co-ordinator. A further theoretical evaluation and reflexion of the field research gives rise to a pedagogical superstructure of Contextual Pedagogy, which also investigates the notions of power, empowerment and over-empowerment within a context of development work. By doing so, the previous Conditional Fields of pedagogic work within a theoretical framework of Contextual Pedagogy become extended in relevance for a pedagogical context of a post-colonial society with special reference to marginalized subjects. In conclusion, the finalization of the research project and its subsequent handing-over process to the Namibian government analyzes the paralyzing effects of an excessive bureaucracy, and the resurgence of conservative and colonial thought in the young and fragile democracy of Namibia.Educational StudiesD.Ed.(Didactics

    Cover crops, tillage, and the suppression of soil borne diseases in soybean

    Cover crops have historically been shown to be useful in the management of pathogens of high value crops, such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts. However, the properties of these cover crops and the type of suppressive soil that they induce, can be useful in the production of agronomic crops as well. Disease suppressive soils either do not allow the pathogen to become established, or they reduce the level of disease resulting from the presence of the pathogen, in comparison to the level that would occur in a conducive soil. In this study, five cover crop treatments (cereal rye, vetch, mustard, rye+vetch, and fallow) were evaluated at the University of Illinois South Farms in both 2014 and 2015 for decreasing the incidence and severity of soybean diseases, changing soil microbial community structures, and increasing soybean yield. Two tillage treatments (chisel plow and ridge till) were also evaluated to determine whether these treatments had any effect on the microbial populations. Data of root disease severity and soybean yield were taken over the two seasons to determine the effectiveness of the different treatments. Bulk and rhizospheric soil samples were taken to compare the microbial community structures of the different treatments in relation to disease development. Poor establishment of cover crops in the field plots led to the use of greenhouse bioassays to evaluate the effects of the cover crop treatments

    Parallel String Matching

    We explore the benefits of parallelizing 7 state-of-the-art string matching algorithms. Using SIMD and multi-threading techniques we achieve a significant performance improvement of up to 43.3x over reference implementations and a speedup of up to 16.7x over the string matching program grep. We evaluate our implementations on the smart-corpora and the full human genome data set. We show scalability over number of threads and impact of pattern length

    Analysis of the extreme diversity of salivary alpha-amylase isoforms generated by physiological proteolysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

    Saliva is a crucial biofluid for oral health and is also of increasing importance as a non-invasive source of disease biomarkers. Salivary alpha-amylase is an abundant protein in saliva, and changes in amylase expression have been previously associated with a variety of diseases and conditions. Salivary alpha-amylase is subject to a high diversity of post-translational modifications, including physiological proteolysis in the oral cavity. Here we developed methodology for rapid sample preparation and non-targeted LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of saliva from healthy subjects and observed an extreme diversity of alpha-amylase proteolytic isoforms. Our results emphasize the importance of consideration of post-translational events such as proteolysis in proteomic studies, biomarker discovery and validation, particularly in saliva
