Optimal parameters of leader development in lightning

    Get PDF
The dependences between the different parameters of a leader in lightning are obtained theoretically. The physical mechanism of the instability leading to the formation of the streamer zone is proposed. The instability has the wave nature and is caused by the self-influence effects of the space charge. Using a stability condition of the leader propagation, a dependence is obtained between the current across the leader head and its velocity of motion. The dependence of the streamer zone length on the gap length is also obtained. It is shown that the streamer zone length is saturated with the increasing of the gap length. A comparison between the obtained dependences and the experimental data is presented

Extraction and primary processing of natural minerals have a direct human impact on the lithosphere in the following way: the area of excavation and the area covered by rock dumps of overburden and substandard rocks increase; the landscape also changes. This problem occurs on all operated deposits and exists in out-of-operation deposits. This paper performs a critical analysis of environmental implications of anthropogenic impacts as a result of Syzran shale-processing refinery work Rock dumps parameters № 1 of Mine 3 and № 2 of Mine 5/6 of ZAO "Kashpirskaya Mine" are investigated. Rock dumps depth and surface ares, conservation volume and utilization capacity are considered to be landscape modifying parametres. The research demonstrates rock dumps parameters change in the period from 1950 to 2002. The paper evaluates the degree of anthropogenic impact of dumps territories and burnt rocks burials which were formed during the extraction of oil shale at Syzran shale-processing refinery. Those rock dumps resulted in the following transformation and change of the natural system and landscape: curvature of the slopes altered, soil and vegetation cover was dislocated. The only industry capable of reducing ecological tension in the region is building industry

Strength properties and structure of a submicrocrystalline Al–Mg–Mn alloy under shock compression

    Get PDF
The results of studying the strength of a submicrocrystalline aluminum A5083 alloy (chemical composition was 4.4Mg–0.6Mn–0.11Si–0.23Fe–0.03Cr–0.02Cu–0.06Ti wt % and Al base) under shockwave compression are presented. The submicrocrystalline structure of the alloy was produced in the process of dynamic channel-angular pressing at a strain rate of 104 s–1. The average size of crystallites in the alloy was 180–460 nm. Hugoniot elastic limit σHEL, dynamic yield stress σy, and the spall strength σSP of the submicrocrystalline alloy were determined based on the free-surface velocity profiles of samples during shock compression. It has been established that upon shock compression, the σHEL and σy of the submicrocrystalline alloy are higher than those of the coarse-grained alloy and σsp does not depend on the grain size. The maximum value of σHEL reached for the submicrocrystalline alloy is 0.66 GPa, which is greater than that in the coarse-crystalline alloy by 78%. The dynamic yield stress is σy = 0.31 GPa, which is higher than that of the coarse-crystalline alloy by 63%. The spall strength is σsp = 1.49 GPa. The evolution of the submicrocrystalline structure of the alloy during shock compression was studied. It has been established that a mixed nonequilibrium grain-subgrain structure with a fragment size of about 400 nm is retained after shock compression, and the dislocation density and the hardness of the alloy are increased

Interplay between lattice, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom in the chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals

The chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals C21H19CuF12N4O6 were studied using the x-ray diffraction and ab initio band structure calculations. We show that the crystal structure modification at T=146 K, associated with the spin crossover transition, induces the changes of the orbital order in half of the Cu sites. This in turn results in the switch of the magnetic interaction sign in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Andersen theory of the coupling between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Elastic properties of FeSi

Measurements of the sound velocities in a single crystal of FeSi were performed in the temperature range 4-300 K. Elastic constants C12C_{12} and C44C_{44} deviate from a quasiharmonic behavior at high temperature; whereas, C12C_{12} increases anomalously in the entire range of temperature, indicating a change in the electron structure of this materia

Interconnection of structural characteristics with dynamic properties of A5083 aluminum alloy

In this work, the resistance of high-strain rate deformation and fracture during shock-wave compression of aluminum alloy A5083 previously obtained in two structural states by torsion under high pressure or dynamic pressing is studied. It is shown by electron microscopy that sub-microcrystalline structures differ in the size of grain–subgrains, dislocation density, and ratio of low-angle and high-angle boundaries. It is established that, at the same grain size, the sub-microcrystalline alloy exhibits higher dynamic properties, and after dynamic pressing, it has higher spall strength
