In the past years, Information- and Communication Technologies have expanded, and many organizations are following the growing trend of embracing new technological innovations. This has resulted in the digital world becoming increasingly important, yet problematic for organizations' communications. We have chosen to focus the study on the outcome of the fusion of social media and the traditional intranet, in other words the social intranet. Organizations can use social intranets as an internal communications channel. The study explores and creates a deeper understanding of employee communication, the social intranet and its function as an internal communications channel. A qualitative approach has been chosen as the method of gathering data. Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews, based on 13 employees from the company EVRY. The study has been limited to EVRY’s two companies EVRY One and EVRY One Graphics. The theoretical framework of the study consists of the theory of Communities of Practise, of "Sociomateriality" and of The Technology Acceptance Model. These theories deal with informal communication, relationships and attitudes towards technology. In the study we present problems, and the limitations associated with social intranets. Our conclusion is that the social intranet can serve as part of an organization’s communications channels. However, in order for it to function properly within the organization, employees' attitudes towards, and relationship with the social intranet, are important aspects for the organization to consider, as these factors indirectly affect internal communications. One aspect that affects the internal communication and the ability to exchange knowledge is internal competition within EVRY. In addition, the social intranet is not a universal solution for organizations’ internal communications as it, in a way, breaks up the natural conversations that take place face-to-face between co-workers. Rather, it should be seen as a complement to other informal communication efforts.

Biophysical and Structural Characterization of a Robust Octameric Beta-Peptide Bundle

Proteins composed of α-amino acids are essential components of the machinery required for life. Stanley Miller\u27s renowned electric discharge experiment provided evidence that an environment of methane, ammonia, water, and hydrogen was sufficient to produce α-amino acids. This reaction also generated other potential protein building blocks such as the ÎČ-amino acid ÎČ-glycine (also known as ÎČ-alanine); however, the potential of these species to form complex ordered structures that support functional roles has not been widely investigated. In this report we apply a variety of biophysical techniques, including circular dichroism, differential scanning calorimetry, analytical ultracentrifugation, NMR and X-ray crystallography, to characterize the oligomerization of two 12-mer ÎČ3-peptides, Acid-1Y and Acid-1Y*. Like the previously reported ÎČ3-peptide Zwit-1F, Acid-1Y and Acid-1Y* fold spontaneously into discrete, octameric quaternary structures that we refer to as ÎČ-peptide bundles. Surprisingly, the Acid-1Y octamer is more stable than the analogous Zwit-1F octamer, in terms of both its thermodynamics and kinetics of unfolding. The structure of Acid-1Y, reported here to 2.3 Å resolution, provides intriguing hypotheses for the increase in stability. To summarize, in this work we provide additional evidence that nonnatural ÎČ-peptide oligomers can assemble into cooperatively folded structures with potential application in enzyme design, and as medical tools and nanomaterials. Furthermore, these studies suggest that nature\u27s selection of α-amino acid precursors was not based solely on their ability to assemble into stable oligomeric structures

Distress by flushes decreased from 8.2 (IQR, 6.5-10.7) in the EA group to 3.3 (IQR, 0.3-8.1) ( p = 0.003), and from 7.6 (IQR, 4.7-8.3) to 3.4 (IQR, 2.0-5.6) ( p = 0.001) in the TA group after 12 wk, (78% and 73% reduction in ''hot flush score,'' respectively). The effect lasted up to 9 mo after treatment ended. CGRP did not change significantly. Few, minor side effects were reported. Article info Limitations: small number of patients; no placebo control, instead a small group controlled for 6 wk pretreatment. Conclusions: EA and TA lowered number of and distress from hot flushes. The hot flush score decreased 78% and 73%, respectively, in line with or better than medical regimens for these symptoms. Acupuncture should be considered an alternative treatment for these symptoms, but further evaluation is needed, preferably with a non-or placebo-treated control group

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Non-pharmacological treatment (NPT) is a useful treatment option in the management of hip or knee osteoarthritis. To our knowledge however, no studies have investigated the effect of NPT in patients with generalized osteoarthritis (GOA). The primary aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of two currently existing health care programs with different intensity and mode of delivery on daily functioning in patients with GOA. The secondary objective is to compare the cost-effectiveness of both interventions.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>In this randomized, single blind, clinical trial with active controls, we aim to include 170 patients with GOA. The experimental intervention consist of six self-management group sessions provided by a multi-disciplinary team (occupational therapist, physiotherapist, dietician and specialized nurse). The active control group consists of two group sessions and four sessions by telephone, provided by a specialized nurse and physiotherapist. Both therapies last six weeks. Main study outcome is daily functioning during the first year after the treatment, assessed on the Health Assessment Questionnaire. Secondary outcomes are health related quality of life, specific complaints, fatigue, and costs. Illness cognitions, global perceived effect and self-efficacy, will also be assessed for a responder analysis. Outcome assessments are performed directly after the intervention, after 26 weeks and after 52 weeks.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This article describes the design of a randomized, single blind, clinical trial with a one year follow up to compare the costs and effectiveness of two non-pharmacological interventions with different modes of delivery for patients with GOA.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Dutch Trial Register NTR2137</p

Influence of Ocean Acidification on a Natural Winter-to-Summer Plankton Succession : First Insights from a Long-Term Mesocosm Study Draw Attention to Periods of Low Nutrient Concentrations

Every year, the oceans absorb about 30% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) leading to a re-equilibration of the marine carbonate system and decreasing seawater pH. Today, there is increasing awareness that these changes-summarized by the term ocean acidification (OA)-could differentially affect the competitive ability of marine organisms, thereby provoking a restructuring of marine ecosystems and biogeochemical element cycles. In winter 2013, we deployed ten pelagic mesocosms in the Gullmar Fjord at the Swedish west coast in order to study the effect of OA on plankton ecology and biogeochemistry under close to natural conditions. Five of the ten mesocosms were left unperturbed and served as controls (similar to 380 mu atm pCO(2)), whereas the others were enriched with CO2-saturated water to simulate realistic end-of-the-century carbonate chemistry conditions (mu 760 mu atm pCO(2)). We ran the experiment for 113 days which allowed us to study the influence of high CO2 on an entire winter-to-summer plankton succession and to investigate the potential of some plankton organisms for evolutionary adaptation to OA in their natural environment. This paper is the first in a PLOS collection and provides a detailed overview on the experimental design, important events, and the key complexities of such a "long-term mesocosm" approach. Furthermore, we analyzed whether simulated end-of-the-century carbonate chemistry conditions could lead to a significant restructuring of the plankton community in the course of the succession. At the level of detail analyzed in this overview paper we found that CO2-induced differences in plankton community composition were non-detectable during most of the succession except for a period where a phytoplankton bloom was fueled by remineralized nutrients. These results indicate: (1) Long-term studies with pelagic ecosystems are necessary to uncover OA-sensitive stages of succession. (2) Plankton communities fueled by regenerated nutrients may be more responsive to changing carbonate chemistry than those having access to high inorganic nutrient concentrations and may deserve particular attention in future studies.Peer reviewe

    Social Class in the Simpsons

    Get PDF
Since the media’s representation of language and social class can maintain and reinforce attitudes and values in society, the purpose of this essay is to describe how social class is depicted in selected episodes of The Simpsons, which is the longest-running sitcom in television history. By using ad hoc analysis on judgment samples of transcripts of two episodes of The Simpsons, this essay may claim to be an empirical, qualitative essay with a hermeneutical approach. Based on the assumption that social class is “the most linguistically marked aspect of our social being” (Chambers 2003:43), a person’s choice of language creates identity for the individual as well as for the group, and thereby also signals belonging to different social classes in society. This means that linguistic variations are related to language in use and influenced by social features that are important for the individual, in this essay exemplified by Cletus and Side Show Bob. The results of the characters’ linguistic features are in accordance with their belonging to different social classes and by that also in accordance with how the different social classes can be depicted in the media.Taken together, depiction of social class in the media touches upon prejudices about differences in society at the same time as it contributes to the ongoing process of creating society. Society influences media, whereas media influences society, reinforcing and maintaining language features correlated to social class

This study concerns unaccompanied refugee children and their experiences of living in Sweden and also their thoughts about identity and security. The aim of this study was to find a deeper understanding of these children’s situation. We formulated three research questions in order to obtain this deeper understanding: ‱ What experiences do the informants have of living in Sweden? ‱ What are the informants’ views of their identity in their new life situation? ‱ What is security to the informants? This is a qualitative study based on six semi-structured interviews with six youths whom have come to Sweden as unaccompanied refugee children. We have used a narrative method which has enabled us to focus on the informants’ own stories. One of the main results of this study is that need of help and support among the informants differs, in what kind of help as well as how much help they need. Furthermore, all the youths claim the great importance of languages – both Swedish and their mother tongue. Language is used as a creator of identity. Security is defined by a majority of the informants as having a family, a kind of security that they do not have. The youths in our study have thus found new ways to feel secure through school. Security is also defined in terms of peace and safety. All the informants describe the asylum process as a too long and difficult time marked by uncertainty. We find it of great importance to point out that these children are individuals with different needs and backgrounds. Our hope is that this study will shed a light on the diversity among unaccompanied refugee children
