    Anisotropic elastic properties of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.)

    Hardwoods in principle show a similar orthotropic behavior as softwoods; however, the ratios of the mechanical parameters between the three anatomical directions and their magnitudes are different and depend strongly on the individual microstructure of the species. The aim of the current study was to characterize the 3-D elastic behavior of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) by tensile, compression, and shear tests in the three anatomical directions and stepwise in between, by means of a universal testing machine in combination with a digital image correlation technique. Young's moduli, shear moduli, and Poisson's ratios have been determined for the different load directions. From studies on the radial-tangential plane of other wood species, it is known that the elastic moduli in the principal directions and the off-axis elastic moduli vary in a nonlinear correlation, depending on density gradients between earlywood and latewood. This angular dependency has been experimentally and theoretically proven for ash. Furthermore, the dependency of mechanical parameters on the fiber-load angle has been experimentally determined. The measurements for principal and off-axis load directions provide a sound basis for modeling of hardwood structure

    Pelaporan dana desa merupakan bentuk kegiatan pertanggungjawaban pemerintah desa terhadap anggaran dana yang telah di berikan oleh negara kepada pemerintah didesa. Pelaporan dana desa yang baik telah diatur dalam Peraturan Menteri Dalam Negeri No 20 Tahun 2018 Pasal 68. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui apakah pelaporan APBDes di Desa Mokupa sudah sesuai dengan Permendagri No 20 Tahun 2018 Pasal 68. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian secara umum menunjukan  bahwa pelaporan APBDes di Desa Mokupa sudah menggunakan permendagri dan pelaporannya sudah cukup baik, namun dalam hal melaporkan kepada pemerintah masih belum sesuai dengan permendagri kurangnya SDM yang berkompeten, adanya perubahan perbub serta pengaruh cuaca menjadi kendala di desa.Â

    In the interest of effective policymaking, this report seeks to clarify certain controversies and identify key gaps in the evidence-base relating to unconventional gas. The scope of this report is restricted to the economic impact of unconventional gas on energy markets. As such, it principally addresses such issues as the energy mix, energy prices, supplies, consumption, and trade flows. Whilst this study touches on coal bed methane and tight gas, its predominant focus is on shale gas, which the evidence at this time suggests will be the form of unconventional gas with the most growth potential in the short- to medium-term. This report considers the prospects for the indigenous production of shale gas within the EU-27 Member States. It evaluates the available evidence on resource size, extractive technology, resource access and market access. This report also considers the implications for the EU of large-scale unconventional gas production in other parts of the world. This acknowledges the fact that many changes in the dynamics of energy supply can only be understood in the broader global context. It also acknowledges that the EU is a major importer of energy, and that it is therefore heavily affected by developments in global energy markets that are largely out of its control.JRC.F.3-Energy securit

    LITTERBASE - Online Portal for Marine Litter & Microplastics and their Implications for Marine Life

    Contamination of the oceans with anthropogenic litter is a global environmental problem which currently receives increasing attention by scientists, policy makers, public authorities, media and the general public. Although research efforts have been intensified, they often do not provide stakeholders with easily understandable information about the dimensions and the extent of the problem. We have developed an online portal to provide easily digestible and continuously updated information on marine litter and microplastics to stakeholders based on scientific literature on a global scale. LITTERBASE gives insight about the distribution of marine litter and its effects on marine biota. Data from 1,420 scientific studies (status 09/10/2017) have been compiled into global maps and real-time graphs to make scientific knowledge accessible to the public. Bibliometric data of all publications were entered, as were metadata pertaining to litter type, litter size, litter quantity unit, aquatic system, biome and total litter quantity. Litter quantities were standardised to the most frequently used units to achieve comparability. Data on biological interactions with litter were also extracted: location of field records, number of species affected, percentage of individuals affected, type of interaction, effects on biota, litter type, litter size, aquatic system and biome. Currently, 1,441 species (status 09/10/2017) have been found to interact with marine litter resulting in mortality in almost 20% of the cases. Web statistics reveal that the information displayed in the LITTERBASE online portal is continuously being retrieved by users from all over the world

    Impacts of plastic pollution in the oceans on marine species, biodiversity and ecosystems

    A new report commissioned by WWF provides the most comprehensive account to date of the extent to which plastic pollution is affecting the global ocean, the impacts it’s having on marine species and ecosystems, and how these trends are likely to develop in future. The report by researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) reveals a serious and rapidly worsening situation that demands immediate and concerted international action: ● Today almost every species group in the ocean has encountered plastic pollution, with scientists observing negative effects in almost 90% of assessed species. ● Not only has plastic pollution entered the marine food web, it is significantly affecting the productivity of some of the world’s most important marine ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves. ● Several key global regions – including the Mediterranean, the East China and Yellow Seas and Arctic sea ice – have already exceeded plastic pollution thresholds beyond which significant ecological risks can occur, and several more regions are expected to follow suit in the coming years. ● If all plastic pollution inputs stopped today, marine microplastic levels would still more than double by 2050 – and some scenarios project a 50-fold increase by 2100

    Hip abductor muscle strength in patients after total or unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol

    Reduced hip abductor strength may indirectly lead to changes in knee kinematics and functional impairment and has been reported in patients with patellofemoral pain and knee osteoarthritis (OA). Limited information is available regarding hip abductor strength following total or unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (TKA/UKA). The aims of this systematic review are to synthesise the evidence of hip abductor muscle strength deficits in patients following TKA/UKA and to determine influencing factors for these deficits.; Embase, Medline, SportDiscus, the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus will be searched for human-based clinical studies investigating hip abductor muscle strength after TKA/UKA for knee OA or avascular necrosis (AVN). Articles studying hip abductor strength after knee arthroplasty for post-traumatic OA will not be considered. No restriction on study design, prosthesis design, surgical approach, patient characteristics or severity of OA/AVN will be applied. We will search articles published between 1 January 1990 and the date of our last search. Only articles in English or German language will be considered for inclusion. Studies reporting manually measured muscle strength or measurements performed at hip abduction angles other than 0° will be excluded. References will be screened by two reviewers independently. Where necessary, a third author will make the final decision. The assessment of quality and risk of bias will be performed with the modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Data will be extracted and presented in a tabular form. Depending on availability, comparable subgroup and meta-analyses will be conducted. Patient characteristics such as age, sex and surgical approach or rehabilitation programme will be analysed, if sufficient data are available.; No ethics approval is required. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and as conference presentation

    Does coffee consumption alter plasma lipoprotein(A) concentrations? A systematic review

    Coffee consumption alters plasma lipid and cholesterol concentrations, however, its effects on lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) have received little study. The aim of this PRISMA compliant systematic review was to examine the role of coffee on serum Lp(a). This study was prospectively registered (PROSPERO 2015:CRD42015032335). PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Central were searched from inception until 9th January 2016 to detect trials and epidemiological studies investigating the impact of coffee on serum Lp(a) concentrations in humans. We identified six relevant publications describing nine experimental trials of various designs. There were a total of 640 participants across all studies and experimental groups. In short-term controlled studies, consumption of coffee, or coffee diterpenes was associated with either a reduction in serum Lp(a) of 11 mg/dl (6 trials, 275 participants), or no effect (2 trials, 56 participants). Conversely, one cross-sectional study with 309 participants showed serum Lp(a) was elevated in chronic consumers of boiled coffee who had a median Lp(a) of 13.0 mg/dl (range 0-130) compared with consumers of filtered coffee who had median Lp(a) 7.9 mg/dl (range 0-144) The effect of coffee on Lp(a) is complex and may follow a biphasic time-course.     Accuracy of 2D Fluoroscopy with Preoperative CT Fused Neuronavigation in Thoracic and Lumbar Pedicle Screw Insertion

    Aim: Pedicle screw fixation is an established technique in the lumbar and thoracic area. Fluoroscopy-guided screw placement and subsequently navigation have decreased the rate of misplaced screws, but no technique has wholly eliminated this risk. This paper aims to study the difference between the accuracy of the fluoroscopic guided screw placement to that of the 2D fluoroscopy- preop CT fused neuronavigation guided technique, a lesser-used navigation technique.  Material and Methods: This retrospective study reflects our results using both techniques between March 2018 and March 2019 in both degenerative or traumatic spinal pathology for thoracic and lumbar regions. The accuracy of the screw placement was measured using Mirza grading system on postoperative CT images. Results: A total number of 56 patients underwent spinal instrumentation surgery. A total of 274 screws were placed with a mean number of 4.89 screws per patient; 199 screws were implanted using neuronavigation and 75 using the freehand-2D fluoroscopy-guided technique.  The accuracy rate of pedicle screw placement in the freehand technique guided by 2D fluoroscopy was 88,00%. With the use of neuronavigation, the accuracy increased to 89,96%. Conclusion:  Pedicle screw placement accuracy is higher when guided by CT-fluoro matching neuronavigation compared to freehand fluoroscopy-guided technique and can be used in departments where there is no intraoperative O-arm or 3D fluoroscopy available

    Site selection for biogenic reef restoration in offshore environments: The Natura 2000 area Borkum Reef Ground as a case study for native oyster restoration

    1. According to the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC), marine protected areas (MPA) should contribute to a good environmental status of the Europeans seas. Measures maintaining or restoring a favourable conservation status of protected species and habitats are mandatory according to the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). 2. Identification of suitable sites for ecological restoration measures within MPAs is a crucial step towards successful conservation and sustainable MPA management. In terms of species restoration, it is important to restore the respective species with the best possible environment for growth, survival, fitness, and successful recruitment. 3. This study provides a comprehensive list of site-selection criteria for ecological species restoration. Three general categories were chosen: (1) ecological history: evidence for the historical distribution; (2) feasibility of restoration: regulating framework and logistics; and (3) environmental conditions: quality of abiotic and biotic factors. A total of 16 site-selection criteria were identified and applied to biogenic reef restoration, namely for reefs of the native European oyster Ostrea edulis, in the German Bight. 4. The Natura 2000 area Borkum Reef Ground was identified as a suitable site for oyster restoration. It is one of three MPAs in the German Exclusive Economic Zone of the North Sea, which have been declared as Nature Conservation Areas according to national legislation. The conservation objectives include maintenance or, if necessary, restoration of the habitat type ‘reefs’. As a reef-building species, the European oyster O. edulis is of particular importance for this habitat type in terms of nature conservation
