A Learning Ecosystem for Linemen Training based on Big Data Components and Learning Analytics
Linemen training is mandatory, complex, and hazardous. Electronic technologies, such as virtual reality or learning management systems, have been used to improve such training, however these lack of interoperability, scalability, and do not exploit trace data generated by users in these systems. In this paper we present our ongoing work on developing a Learning Ecosystem for Training Linemen in Maintenance Maneuvers using the Experience API standard, Big Data components, and Learning Analytics. The paper describes the architecture of the ecosystem, elaborates on collecting learning experiences and emotional states, and applies analytics for the exploitation of both, legacy and new data. In the former, we exploit legacy e-Learning data for building a Domain model using Text Mining and unsupervised clustering algorithms. In the latter we explore self-reports capabilities for gathering educational support content, and assessing students emotional states. Results show that, a suitable domain model for personalizing maneuvers linemen training path can be built from legacy text data straightforwardly. Regarding self reports, promising results were obtained for tracking emotional states and collecting educational support material, nevertheless, more work around linemen training is required
Ligand-Based Virtual Screening and Molecular Docking of Benzimidazoles as Potential Inhibitors of Triosephosphate Isomerase Identified New Trypanocidal Agents
Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) is a parasite that affects humans and other mammals. T. cruzi depends on glycolysis as a source of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) supply, and triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) plays a key role in this metabolic pathway. This enzyme is an attractive target for the design of new trypanocidal drugs. In this study, a ligand-based virtual screening (LBVS) from the ZINC15 database using benzimidazole as a scaffold was accomplished. Later, a molecular docking on the interface of T. cruzi TIM (TcTIM) was performed and the compounds were grouped by interaction profiles. Subsequently, a selection of compounds was made based on cost and availability for in vitro evaluation against blood trypomastigotes. Finally, the compounds were analyzed by molecular dynamics simulation, and physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties were determined using SwissADME software. A total of 1604 molecules were obtained as potential TcTIM inhibitors. BP2 and BP5 showed trypanocidal activity with half-maximal lytic concentration (LC50) values of 155.86 and 226.30 µM, respectively. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation analyzes showed a favorable docking score of BP5 compound on TcTIM. Additionally, BP5 showed a low docking score (−5.9 Kcal/mol) on human TIM compared to the control ligand (−7.2 Kcal/mol). Both compounds BP2 and BP5 showed good physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties as new anti-T. cruzi agents. View Full-Tex

Benefits and limitations of food processing by high-pressure technologies: effects on functional compounds and abiotic contaminants
The continuing and worldwide growth of pressure processing technologies to pasteurize
and sterilize foods justifies the need to study the effects on functional compounds and
nonbiotic contaminants as affected by high pressure processing (HPP) and pressureassisted
thermal processing (PATP). Substantially more research will be required to
determine the complex effects of the food matrix on chemical reactions leading to losses
of nutrients and functional components, production of toxic compounds, and to
modifications of toxic residues of chemicals used in food production or coming from
food contact materials. In PATP treatments, pressure can also increase, decrease or have
no effect on the thermal degradation rate of these substances. HPP has no major
negative and often beneficial effects on the retention of nutrients and functional
components. However, information on PATP effects is very limited and additional
research will be required before implementing this promising new technology. Keywords: polyphenols,

On strategic choices faced by large pharmaceutical laboratories and their effect on innovation risk under fuzzy conditions
ObjectivesWe develop a fuzzy evaluation model that provides managers at different responsibility levels in pharmaceutical laboratories with a rich picture of their innovation risk as well as that of competitors. This would help them take better strategic decisions around the management of their present and future portfolio of clinical trials in an uncertain environment. Through three structured fuzzy inference systems (FISs), the model evaluates the overall innovation risk of the laboratories by capturing the financial and pipeline sides of the risk. Methods and materialsThree FISs, based on the Mamdani model, determine the level of innovation risk of large pharmaceutical laboratories according to their strategic choices. Two subsystems measure different aspects of innovation risk while the third one builds on the results of the previous two. In all of them, both the partitions of the variables and the rules of the knowledge base are agreed through an innovative 2-tuple-based method. With the aid of experts, we have embedded knowledge into the FIS and later validated the model.ResultsIn an empirical application of the proposed methodology, we evaluate a sample of 31 large pharmaceutical laboratories in the period 2008–2013. Depending on the relative weight of the two subsystems in the first layer (capturing the financial and the pipeline sides of innovation risk), we estimate the overall risk. Comparisons across laboratories are made and graphical surfaces are analyzed in order to interpret our results. We have also run regressions to better understand the implications of our results.ConclusionsThe main contribution of this work is the development of an innovative fuzzy evaluation model that is useful for analyzing the innovation risk characteristics of large pharmaceutical laboratories given their strategic choices. The methodology is valid for carrying out a systematic analysis of the potential for developing new drugs over time and in a stable manner while managing the risks involved. We provide all the necessary tools and datasets to facilitate the replication of our system, which also may be easily applied to other settings

Galactic Gamma-Ray Diffuse Emission at TeV energies with HAWC Data
The Galactic gamma-ray diffuse emission (GDE) is emitted by cosmic rays
(CRs), ultra-relativistic protons and electrons, interacting with gas and
electromagnetic radiation fields in the interstellar medium. Here we present
the analysis of TeV diffuse emission from a region of the Galactic Plane over
the range in longitude of , using data collected with
the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) detector. Spectral, longitudinal and
latitudinal distributions of the TeV diffuse emission are shown. The radiation
spectrum is compatible with the spectrum of the emission arising from a CR
population with an "index" similar to that of the observed CRs. When comparing
with the \texttt{DRAGON} \textit{base model}, the HAWC GDE flux is higher by
about a factor of two. Unresolved sources such as pulsar wind nebulae and TeV
halos could explain the excess emission. Finally, deviations of the Galactic CR
flux from the locally measured CR flux may additionally explain the difference
between the predicted and measured diffuse fluxes
