    Wind Speed Affects Pollination Success in Blackberries

    Pollination of wild plants and agricultural crops is a vitally important ecosystem service. Many landscape and environmental factors influence the pollination success of crops, including distance from natural habitat, wind speed, and solar radiation. Although there is a general consensus that increasing distance from forest decreases pollination success, few studies have examined the influence of specific environmental factors. In this study, we examined which environmental factors influence the pollination success of blackberries (Rubus glaucus). We measured the number of fruitlets per berry, a proxy for pollination success, as well as the weight and sweetness of each berry. Our results indicate that number of fruitlets is positively correlated with wind speed, but number of unripe red berries per bush is negatively correlated with wind speed. In addition, sweetness increased with increasing numbers of red berries per bush but was lower when flowers and berries were present, though this result should be considered with caution due to methodological limitations. Our findings suggest that a little studied environmental factor, wind, has a large impact on the number of fruitlets in blackberries. Although our findings should be confirmed in other locations to draw broader conclusions, they suggest that producers should consider the effect of wind on blackberry yield to optimize blackberry production

    Mortalidad por lesiones de tránsito en adultos mayores en la República de Ecuador entre los años 1990 y 2018: estudio descriptivo

    The present study aimed to estimate the trend in road traffic injury mortality in older adults (60 years of age or older) and comparison with those <60 years of age in Ecuador (1990-2018). Official death records and population projections were used to calculate mortality rates per 100,000 population, rate ratios, years of potential life lost (YPLL), and trends. Those under 60 years of age had mortality rates of 16.7 (per 100,000) compared to 36.2 (per 100,000) for older adults, with an increasing trend in YPLL. Older adults recorded fewer deaths than the younger population. However, it is necessary to develop road safety strategies oriented to the progressive aging of the Ecuadorian population. [Last Access: December 16th, 2021].El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo estimar la tendencia de mortalidad por lesiones de tránsito en adultos mayores (igual o mayor a 60 años edad) y la comparación con los menores a 60 años edad en el Ecuador (1990-2018). Se emplearon los registros de defunción y proyecciones demográficas oficiales para el cálculo de tasas de mortalidad por 100 mil habitantes, razón de tasas, años de vida potencialmente perdidos (AVPP) y tendencias. Los menores a 60 años edad registraron tasas de mortalidad de 16,7 (por 100 mil) frente a 36,2 (por 100 mil) en los adultos mayores, con tendencia al aumento en los AVPP. Los adultos mayores registraron menor número de casos de fallecimientos con relación a la población más joven. Sin embargo, es necesario elaborar estrategias en seguridad vial orientadas al progresivo envejecimiento de la población ecuatoriana.     Biochemical and hormonal changes associated with root growth restriction under cadmium stress during maize (Zea mays L.) pre-emergence

    Cadmium (Cd) pollution of agricultural soils is a growing global concern. Plant growth restriction is the main visible symptom of Cd toxicity, and this metal may be particularly harmful to the preformed, seminal root during the pre-emergence stage. In the present study, we focused on Cd phytotoxicity in seminal root growth, nutrient composition, redox status, and hormone homeostasis during the pre-emergence stage of maize (Zea mays L) plants, distinguishing between the root apex and the remaining root tissue. After 72 h of metal exposure (50 and 100 µM CdCl2), root length and biomass, as well as Ca, Fe, Mg, and Mn contents, were diminished. A redox imbalance was evidenced by changes in peroxidase activities and the ascorbate–dehydroascorbate ratio decreased in both root parts. There were fewer carbonylated proteins in both root fractions after exposure to 50 µM Cd, compared to 100 µM Cd, which was related to increased 20S proteasome activities. Cd incremented ABA, IAA, and SA contents, but drastically reduced the biologically active gibberellin GA4 and the conjugate jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile). We demonstrated that the whole root tissue is involved in the maize response to Cd stress, which entails redox and hormonal rearrangements, probably directed to widen the plant defense lines at the expense of root growth

    PileLineGUI: a desktop environment for handling genome position files in next-generation sequencing studies

    Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies are making sequence data available on an unprecedented scale. In this context, new catalogs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism and mutations generated by resequencing studies are usually stored in genome position files (e.g. Variant Call Format, SAMTools pileup, BED, GFF) comprising of large lists of genomic positions, which are difficult to handle by researchers. Here, we present PileLineGUI, a novel desktop application primarily designed for manipulating, browsing and analysing genome position files (GPF), with specific support to somatic mutation finding studies. The developed tool also integrates a new genome browser module specially designed for inspecting GPFs.     Premissas para a compreensão da saúde dos trabalhadores no setor serviço

    At the present time the service sector is responsible for over two thirds of the GNP in developed countries and, in Brazil, it employs nearly 75% of the economically active population. Many authors view this phenomenon as a manifestation of the transition from industrial society to a service society. Yet, in spite of considering technological changes and the restructuring of production, studies on workers' health do not search far enough for a comprehension of the characteristics of the service sector, basically keeping to references to industrial processes. The present study analyzes specific concepts related to work processes in the service sector, which are considered important for an understanding of workers' health in this sector. This analysis puts forward the hypothesis that worker-consumer physical proximity is one of the main characteristics of work relations in that sector, leading to potential impacts on health and disease processes. From this perspective, the concepts of simultaneousness, co-presence, co-production, self-service and emotional management are incorporated. Such peculiarities, besides allowing a better understanding of workers' health/illness processes in the service sector, point to the need to create a new interface between workers' health and the emerging consumer health protection practices.O setor serviço ou terciário responde atualmente por mais de dois terços do PIB nos países desenvolvidos e, no Brasil, emprega cerca de três quartos da população economicamente ativa. Muitos autores consideram que esse fenômeno expressa uma transição da sociedade industrial para a sociedade de serviços. Entretanto, os estudos sobre a saúde do trabalhador, mesmo atentos às mutações tecnológicas e à reestruturação produtiva, não se aprofundam suficientemente no conhecimento das características do setor serviço, persistindo em referências aos processos industriais. O presente ensaio tem por objetivo analisar determinados conceitos sobre os processos de trabalho no setor serviço considerados importantes para compreensão da saúde dos trabalhadores desse setor. Formula-se a hipótese da proximidade entre trabalhador e consumidor como uma das principais características das relações de trabalho desse setor com possibilidades de repercussões específicas nos processos saúde e doença. Sob essa perspectiva de análise são incorporados os conceitos de simultaneidade, co-presença, co-produção, autosserviço e gestão emocional. Conclui-se que essas peculiaridades, além de permitirem uma compreensão mais adequada do processo saúde/doença dos trabalhadores no setor serviço, indicam a necessidade da construção de uma nova interface entre a saúde do trabalhador e as práticas emergentes de proteção à saúde do consumidor
