    This work presents the evolution of the five editions of the educational activity named “Technological Challenge” specially focused on the students at “Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Telecomunicación” (ETSIT), but open to all students of the “Universidad de Málaga” (UMA). This initiative has been developed in the context of the educational innovation project PIE17-021 funded by UMA. The “Technological Challenge” consists on the formulation of specific real problems, which students must face in a competitive regime. This activity allows the reinforcement and evaluation of basic and general competences reached by the graduate students in the ETSIT. After nearly five years, this paper describes the evaluation of the results, regarding interest and participation of the students in the “Technology Challenge” along with the basic and general competences reached by the students.Universidad de Málaga.     Dendritic Cells From the Cervical Mucosa Capture and Transfer HIV-1 via Siglec-1

Yet, the molecular mechanism at the cervical mucosa underlying this viral transmission pathway remains unknown. Here we identified a subset of HLA-DR+ CD14+ CD11c+ cervical DCs at the lamina propria of the ectocervix and the endocervix that expressed the type-I interferon inducible lectin Siglec-1 (CD169), which promoted viral uptake. In the cervical biopsy of a viremic HIV-1+ patient, Siglec-1+ cells harbored HIV-1-containing compartments, demonstrating that in vivo, these cells trap viruses. Ex vivo, a type-I interferon antiviral environment enhanced viral capture and trans-infection via Siglec-1. Nonetheless, HIV-1 transfer via cervical DCs was effectively prevented with antibodies against Siglec-1. Our findings contribute to decipher how cervical DCs may boost HIV-1 replication and promote systemic viral spread from the cervical mucosa, and highlight the importance of including inhibitors against Siglec-1 in microbicidal strategies

    Efficacy of bortezomib in sarcomas with high levels of MAP17 (PDZK1IP1

    Sarcomas are malignant tumors accounting for a high percentage of cancer morbidity and mortality in children and young adults. Surgery and radiation therapy are the accepted treatments for most sarcomas; however, patients with metastatic disease are treated with systemic chemotherapy. Many tumors display marginal levels of chemoresponsiveness, and new treatment approaches are needed. MAP17 is a small non-glycosylated membrane protein overexpressed in carcinomas. The levels of MAP17 could be used as a prognostic marker to predict the response to bortezomib in hematological malignancies and in breast tumors. Therefore, we analyzed the expression of this oncogene in sarcomas and its relationship with clinico-pathological features, as well as tested whether it can be used as a new biomarker to predict the therapeutic response to bortezomib and new therapies for sarcomas. We found that the levels of MAP17 were related to clinical features and poor survival in a cohort of 69 patients with different sarcoma types, not being restricted to any special subtype of tumor. MAP17 expression is associated with poor overall survival (p<0.001) and worse disease-free survival (p=0.002). Cell lines with high levels of MAP17 show a better response to bortezomib in vitro. Furthermore, patient-derived xenografts (PDX) with high levels of MAP17 respond to bortezomib in vivo. Our results showed that this response is due to the lower levels of NFκB and autophagy activation.     Old Age Prejudice in Mexican University Students: Comparisons by Gender

    The goal of the present research was to compare the profiles of old age prejudice in male and female students from the area of physical activity. The study was conducted from January to October 2016. Participants were recruited from different semesters of the Physical Education and Human Motricity bachelor’s degrees offered at the Faculty of Physical Culture Sciences of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, Mexico. The sample was obtained through convenience sampling, and included 1652 participants; 828 women and 824 men, mean age was 20.51 ± 1.83 years 20.90 ± 2.03 years respectively. The approach of the study was quantitative with a descriptive survey-like design. All participants completed the Questionnaire on Negative Stereotypes towards Old Age. Results from the Multivariate Analyses of Variance, and the follow-up Univariate Analyses of Variance, show that men report greater levels of prejudice towards old age on the sociomotivational (F = 31.657, p&lt;.001) and character-personality (F = 15.789, p&lt;.001) factors. No differences were found on the health factor (i.e., mental and physical). These results suggest that when designing any type of intervention in which the purpose isto improve the perception of young people towards the elderly, the variable gender should be considered. Future research should replicate these findings in larger samples

    Epithelial-mesenchymal transitions: the importance of changing cell state in development and disease

    The events that convert adherent epithelial cells into individual migratory cells that can invade the extracellular matrix are known collectively as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Throughout evolution, the capacity of cells to switch between these two cellular states has been fundamental in the generation of complex body patterns. Here, we review the EMT events that build the embryo and further discuss two prototypical processes governed by EMT in amniotes: gastrulation and neural crest formation. Cells undergo EMT to migrate and colonize distant territories. Not surprisingly, this is also the mechanism used by cancer cells to disperse throughout the body

    Factorial Composition of the Questionnaire for Eudaimonic Well-Being (Qewb) in Mexican University Students

    The present study aims to provide empirical support for the factorial division Questionnaire adapted by Schutte et al. (2013) in a sample of women and men Mexicans adults. The total sample was of 1477 Mexican university students; 774 women and 703 men. The age ranged between 18 and 28 years (mean = 20.67 ± 1.90 years). The factorial structure of the questionnaire was analyzed by 1) Exploratory factor analysis and 2) confirmatory factor analysis and factorial invariance. The factors of both subsamples showed adequate reliability and high congruence between pairs of factors, particularly considering the small number of items in each, resulting in a fully confirmatory model. However, the model obtained does not match fully with that proposed by Schutte et al. (2013)

    Survivin inhibition with YM155 ameliorates experimental pulmonary arterial hypertension

    Background: Imbalance between cell proliferation and apoptosis underlies the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Current vasodilator treatment of PAH does not target the uncontrolled proliferative process in pulmonary arteries. Proteins involved in the apoptosis pathway may play a role in PAH and their inhibition might represent a potential therapeutic target. Survivin is a member of the apoptosis inhibitor protein family involved in cell proliferation.Objectives: This study aimed to explore the potential role of survivin in the pathogenesis of PAH and the effects of its inhibition.Methods: In SU5416/hypoxia-induced PAH mice we assessed the expression of survivin by immunohistochemistry, western-blot analysis, and RT-PCR; the expression of proliferation-related genes (Bcl2 and Mki67); and the effects of the survivin inhibitor YM155. In explanted lungs from patients with PAH we assessed the expression of survivin, BCL2 and MKI67.Results: SU5416/hypoxia mice showed increased expression of survivin in pulmonary arteries and lung tissue extract, and upregulation of survivin, Bcl2 and Mki67 genes. Treatment with YM155 reduced right ventricle (RV) systolic pressure, RV thickness, pulmonary vascular remodeling, and the expression of survivin, Bcl2, and Mki67 to values similar to those in control animals. Lungs of patients with PAH also showed increased expression of survivin in pulmonary arteries and lung extract, and also that of BCL2 and MKI67 genes, compared with control lungs.Conclusion: We conclude that survivin might be involved in the pathogenesis of PAH and that its inhibition with YM155 might represent a novel therapeutic approach that warrants further evaluation
