In the opposite lane: How Women of Colour experience, negotiate and apply an oppositional gaze to dominant cycling discourses

In a cultural context dominated by the car, cyclists are often marginalised. For Women of Colour, this marginalisation may be heightened and help to reinforce often already low cycling rates. This paper is the first to pair hooks’ concept of the ‘oppositional gaze’ with Hall’s theories of representation and reception to explore how dominant discourses around cycling, gender and race shape the experience of UK Women of Colour who cycle. Using go-along interviews with cycling influencers and advocates who are also Women of Colour, it provides space for counternarratives that can challenge dominant discourses about cycling. Borrowing the concept of ‘oppositional gaze,’ we examine the agency of those whose cycling experience is simultaneously shaped by both hypervisibility and invisibility on the road as in the broader cultural and policy contexts. We find that masculine sporty representations in cycling in the UK have material effects on the experience of cycling for women. Women of Colour must constantly negotiate these and other representations that do not fit them easily, sometimes claiming and sometimes challenging aspects of dominant discourses. Despite a small sample size and diverse locations, the insights offered by our research can help policymakers in similar cultural contexts start to build on existing diverse cycling experiences to create more inclusive cycling futures

Disparidades de gênero em mortalidade: desafios para a equidade na saúde em Porto Rico

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to deepen the analysis of mortality indicators by sex in Puerto Rico. The gender perspective is used to identify the differentials and inequalities that generate disparities in mortality among women and men in that country. In 2008-2010, life expectancy at birth for both sexes reached 78.83 years, with a gap of 7.71 years among women and men, which is higher in the group of very low mortality countries, internationally. The years of potential life lost (YPLL) by age and external causes of death and natural death are used, among other indicators, for further analysis of male mortality from a gender perspective. Young men have a very high premature mortality because many deaths are due to by external causes: homicides, suicides and accidents. In the case of women's, premature deaths are prevalent due natural causes in all age groups. The result of the study is to promote gender mainstreaming to achieve health equity for women and men. Puerto Rico requires health plans, programs and policies that take into account gender disparities in order to achieve a longer life span-free of preventable disease, disability, injury and premature death- which currently affects more men than women. Managing and Planning Water Resources for Irrigation: Smart-Irrigation Systems for Providing Sustainable Agriculture and Maintaining Ecosystem Services

    Get PDF
Smart-irrigation systems are a hot topic in irrigation management. Satellite imaging, sensors and controls, communication technologies and irrigation decision models are readily available. The price of the required technology is being reduced year after year, and its implementation in agriculture gives real-time information that allows for more accurate management of water resources. Even so, the adaptation of existing technologies to particular situations that the irrigation management is facing in different agro-environmental contexts is needed. This Special Issue addresses the application of different smart-irrigation technologies in four different research areas: (1) remote sensing-based estimates of crop evapotranspiration, (2) Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for smart-irrigation, (3) precision irrigation models and controls, and (4) the price of natural resources. The nine papers presented in this special issue cover a wide range of practical applications, and this editorial summarizes each of them

PySCIPOpt: Mathematical Programming in Python with the SCIP Optimization Suite

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available frpm Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record5th International Congress on Mathematical Software (ICMS 2016), 11-14 July 2016, Berlin, GermanySCIP is a solver for a wide variety of mathematical optimization problems. It is written in C and extendable due to its plug-in based design. However, dealing with all C specifics when extending SCIP can be detrimental to development and testing of new ideas. This paper attempts to provide a remedy by introducing PySCIPOpt, a Python interface to SCIP that enables users to write new SCIP code entirely in Python. We demonstrate how to intuitively model mixed-integer linear and quadratic optimization problems and moreover provide examples on how new Python plug-ins can be added to SCIP.German Federal Ministry of Education and Researc

An Allelotyping PCR for Identifying Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis, Hadar, Heidelberg, and Typhimurium

    Get PDF
Current commercial PCRs tests for identifying Salmonella target genes unique to this genus. However, there are two species, six subspecies, and over 2,500 different Salmonella serovars, and not all are equal in their significance to public health. For example, finding S. enterica subspecies IIIa Arizona on a table egg layer farm is insignificant compared to the isolation of S. enterica subspecies I serovar Enteritidis, the leading cause of salmonellosis linked to the consumption of table eggs. Serovars are identified based on antigenic differences in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)(O antigen) and flagellin (H1 and H2 antigens). These antigenic differences are the outward appearance of the diversity of genes and gene alleles associated with this phenotype
