Boundary Conditions as Mass Generation Mechanism for Real Scalar Fields
We consider the effects of homogeneous Dirichlet's boundary conditions on two
infinite parallel plane surfaces separated by a small distance {\it a}. We find
that although spontaneous symmetry breaking does not occur for the theory of a
massless, quartically self-interacting real scalar field, the theory becomes a
theory of a massive scalar field.Comment: 10 pages; added remarks for section 3, references removed and others

Computational Results on Membership in R&D Cooperation Networks: To Be or Not To Be in a Research Joint Venture
In this study, we analyze firms’ membership in R&D (Research and Development) cooperation networks. Our main research hypothesis is that the membership in cooperation networks is related to the degree of the knowledge spillover. The approach focus on both cost symmetry and cost asymmetry. For that purpose, our work is developed in two tasks: we first develop an analytical model with three stages: in the first, firms decide whether to participate in a cooperative research network; in the second they simultaneously choose the level of R&D output, and finally firms choose the level of output through Cournot competition under both cost symmetry and cost asymmetry. Then we proceed with computational simulations in order to verify our hypothesis. From our results, we were able to conclude that cooperation leads to an improvement on RJV firms’ position in the market as it allows them to produce more than others with the same production conditions. Additionally, cooperating firms have to spend fewer resources on research, which turns the network a tremendous success on the productive efficiency level.R&D, networks, spillover, simulation, RJV

Conceição Rosa Pereira & Cª., Lda : Luis Onofre : strategic development for a Portuguese luxury brand
How can a Portuguese luxury brand stand out in the competitive footwear industry? Which internationalization strategies should the company uses and what are the most important resources that will sustain the firm competitive advantage in this market?
Conceição Rosa Pereira & Cª., Lda is a Portuguese company that operates in the footwear industry and its most recognized by his own shoe brand – Luis Onofre. Besides operating in the footwear industry by commercializing the brand Luis Onofre the company also takes care of production for private labels.
This dissertation purposes a journey into the company history to understand the key milestones and to get to know the position of the company in the recent years. There will be the opportunity to comprehend the differentiation factors from the firm and to analyze the resources and the capabilities that enable to firm to have competitive advantages.
Looking at the other: Museological narrative on diversity in the era of globalization
This article presents the partial results of a research about the recognition of cultural diversity on museum narratives. From an analysis of the formation of alterity on different exhibitions in several museums in the Iberian Peninsula, Brazil and Mozambique, we sought to identify the hegemonic narrative processes and the processes of silencing and forgetting the difference. We argue, from the Portuguese cultural speech that without the inclusion of narratives about the diversity culture does not provide a guiding mapping to address innovation
Automotive gestures recognition based on capacitive sensing
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Eletrónica Industrial e ComputadoresDriven by technological advancements, vehicles have steadily increased in
sophistication, specially in the way drivers and passengers interact with their
vehicles. For example, the BMW 7 series driver-controlled systems, contains
over 700 functions. Whereas, it makes easier to navigate streets, talk on phone
and more, this may lead to visual distraction, since when paying attention to
a task not driving related, the brain focus on that activity. That distraction is,
according to studies, the third cause of accidents, only surpassed by speeding
and drunk driving.
Driver distraction is stressed as the main concern by regulators, in particular,
National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA), which is developing
recommended limits for the amount of time a driver needs to spend
glancing away from the road to operate in-car features. Diverting attention
from driving can be fatal; therefore, automakers have been challenged to design
safer and comfortable human-machine interfaces (HMIs) without missing
the latest technological achievements.
This dissertation aims to mitigate driver distraction by developing a gestural
recognition system that allows the user a more comfortable and intuitive
experience while driving. The developed system outlines the algorithms to recognize
gestures using the capacitive technology.
capacitiva. It is worth noting that this work has been financially supported by the Portugal Incentive System for Research and Technological Development in scope of the projects in co-promotion number 036265/2013 (HMIExcel 2013-2015), number 002814/2015 (iFACTORY 2015-2018) and number 002797/2015 (INNOVCAR 2015-2018)
