Contribution to the floristic knowledge of the Maddalena Mountains (Basilicata and Campania, southern Italy)
The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics
and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. It was held in 2013 along the Maddalena
Mountains, a mountain ridge of the southern Apennines located between the Basilicata and Campania
administrative regions (southern Italy), considered as being poorly characterized in terms of vascular flora.
A total of 701 units belonging to 74 plant families were recorded including two varieties and four hybrids.Thirty-five taxa resulted endemic to Italy and only 11 alien species were detected, while 36 taxa are new
or confirmed for the regional floras of Basilicata and/or Campania. In particular, 12 taxa are new for
Basilicata, while four are confirmed. Regarding Campania, 14 taxa resulted new for the regional flora and
five were confirmed
From closed testaments to books: Virtual X-ray Reading as an alternate digitization technology for fragile documents
In recent years, research and technology made considerable progress in increasing the speed and the safety of the entire digtization process of ancient collections. Despite this, imaging ancient, fragile or un-opened documents remains a formidable challenge. We employ an alternate digitization technique for hand-written documents, exploiting x-ray tomography: Virtual X-ray Reading. Thanks to the high penetration of x-rays, we can acquire 3-dimensional (3D) tomographic images of a multi-page document without opening it. The x-ray contrast necessary for the readability is produced by the chemical composition and the consequent strong x-ray absorption of the iron gall inks - largely used for European handwritten documents. Contribution to the floristic knowledge of the head of the Po Valley (Piedmont, north Italy)
In 2014, the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics, and Evolution of the Italian
Botanical Society was held in Piemonte (northern Italy), at the head of the Po Valley. This valley, at whose
extremity is located the Monviso (3,841 m a.s.l.), belongs to the Cottian Alps about which very little is
known from a floristic point of view. An inventory of the taxa of vascular plants collected during the field
trip is reported here. The research led to the identification of 3,546 exsiccata, kept in nine public and nine
private collections. A total of 669 taxa belonging to 79 plant families were recorded. Six taxa resulted
endemic to Italy and three exclusive to Piemonte, while only nine alien species were detected; six taxa are
new and five confirmed for the regional flora

It includes new records, exclusions, confirmations, and status changes for Italy or for Italian administrative regions for taxa in the genera Acer, Amaranthus, Araujia, Aubrieta, Avena, Bidens, Calycanthus, Celtis, Elaeagnus, Eragrostis, Euonymus, Fallopia, Ficus, Hedera, Lantana, Ligustrum, Ludwigia, Morus, Oenothera, Opuntia, Oxalis, Parkinsonia, Paspalum, Paulownia, Platycladus, Pleuropterus, Rumex, Salvia, Senecio, Setaria, Syagrus, Tradescantia, Trifolium and Yucca. Furthermore, a new combination in the genus Vicia is proposed

An updated checklist of the vascular flora native to Italy
An updated inventory of the native vascular flora of Italy, providing details on the occurrence at regional level, is presented. The checklist includes 8195 taxa (6417 species and 1778 subspecies), distributed in 1092 genera and 152 families; 23 taxa are lycophytes, 108 ferns and fern allies, 30 gymnosperms and 8034 angiosperms. The taxa currently occurring in Italy are 7483, while 568 taxa have not been confirmed in recent times, 99 are doubtfully occurring in the country and 19 are data deficient. Out of the 568 not confirmed taxa, 26 are considered extinct or possibly extinct

Invasion trends of aquatic Ludwigia hexapetala and L. peploides subsp. montevidensis (Onagraceae) in Italy based on herbarium records and global datasets
Identifying areas susceptible to invasion by an alien species is a strategy of
prevention. We used national herbaria and global databases to assess the invasion trends of the two aquatic invasive species Ludwigia hexapetala and Ludwigia peploides subsp. montevidensis in Italy. We defined the invasion status with invasion curves and predicted potentially suitable areas with Species Distribution Models based on WorldClim variables and the human footprint index. Low seasonal variation in temperature and precipitation, temperature ≥ 20 °C in the driest period of the year and low precipitation in the coldest period are the bioclimatic factors that most account for the potential distribution of the two species. The human footprint has a lower relative importance than bioclimatic variables. All Italian peninsula appears as a suitable bioclimatic environment for the invasion of the two Ludwigia species, with over 90% of areas with high suitability lying below 600 m altitude. Only mountain regions and the islands appear less suitable. The agricultural land at the foothill of the Appennine in the Mediterranean region is the most vulnerable to the invasion. Considering the trend of the invasion curves, which have been sharply rising for the latest decades, there are reasons to expect that the alien Ludwigia species will continue their expansion, if no timely and effective actions are taken. Informative campaigns, accurate monitoring and prompt management are fundamental preventive tools in areas predicted as vulnerable to invasion by this study
