A Robust Multigrid Solver for Isogeometric Analysis Based on Multiplicative Schwarz Smoothers

The design of fast solvers for isogeometric analysis is receiving a lot of attention due to the challenge that offers to find an algorithm with a robust convergence with respect to the spline degree. Here, we analyze the application of geometric multigrid methods to this type of discretization, and we propose a multigrid approach based on overlapping multiplicative Schwarz methods as smoothers. The size of the blocks considered within these relaxation procedures is adapted to the spline degree. A simple multigrid V-cycle with only one step of presmoothing results in a very efficient algorithm, whose convergence is independent on the spline degree and the spatial discretization parameter. Local Fourier analysis is shown to be very useful for the understanding of the problems encountered in the design of a robust multigrid method for IGA, and it is performed to support the good convergence properties of the proposed solver. In fact, an analysis for any spline degree and an arbitrary size of the blocks within the Schwarz smoother is presented for the one-dimensional case. The efficiency of the solver is also demonstrated through several numerical experiments, including a two-dimensional problem on a nontrivial computational domain

This study analyzes aspects of the iconographic repertoire that contributed to reaffirm and strengthen the royal power of one of the most emblematic kings of Aragon of the late eleventh century: Sancho Ramírez. The effigies stamped on his first coins, which should be considered among his most effective propaganda vehicles, will be studied, as will an element that reached a symbolic significance only understandable in relation to the royal institution that, in turn, promoted it: the cross, now developed as the clearest element of monarchical proclamation. In addition to considering the political motivations that lie beneath these representations, the relevance of the county of Urgell will be discussed and, in connection with it, Doña Sancha, a figure worthy of deeper investigation.

Polymorphisms of the melatonin receptor 1A (MTNR1A) gene affect the sexual performance of Rasa Aragonesa rams without changing their social dominance

This study aimed to investigate whether a specific genotype of the MTNR1A gene influences social dominance and reproductive performance in rams. Thirty-one rams were genotyped for Rsal and Mnll polymorphism of the gene: CC (n=19), CT (n=5), and TT (n=7), and GG (n=20), GA (n=6), or AA (n=5), respectively. Maintenance (standing still, lying down, drinking, feeding, walking, or stereotyping) and social behavior (agonistic and antagonistic interactions among rams) were recorded by direct observations involving instantaneous scan sampling and continuous behavior sampling. For each animal, his Index of Success (IS) and Displacement (ID) were calculated. One week after the social-behavioral observations, rams were tested in individual serving-capacity tests involving three ewes that were synchronized into estrus in a 15-m2 pen for 20 min. The genotypes did not differ in the number of aggressions they performed (CC: 88.95±12.85; CT: 106.20±21.00; TT: 70.43±8.50; GG: 76.05±8.72; GA: 119.00±16.16; AA: 95.80±36.39) or received (CC:75.79±5.82; CT:92.40±8.68; TT: 86.14±15.05; GG: 79.25±6.58; GA: 86.83±11.51; AA: 79.80±12.74), and their active and passive behaviors were similar. The genotypes did not differ significantly in IS or ID, and the proportion of rams in each success category was similar among groups. For the Rsal and Mnll polymorphism, TT and GG rams were responsible for 54% and 56% of recorded sexual events (P < 0.05), respectively. Results of this study confirm that the best sexual performance of rams was among those that carried certain genotypes of the MTNR1A gene. Still, it was not correlated with differences in social dominance

Proximity of Iron Pnictide Superconductors to a Quantum Tricritical Point

We determine the nature of the magnetic quantum critical point in the doped LaFeAsO using a set of constrained density functional calculations that provide ab initio coefficients for a Landau order parameter analysis. The system turns out to be remarkably close to a quantum tricritical point, where the nature of the phase transition changes from first to second order. We compare with the effective field theory and discuss the experimental consequences.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The AFLOW Fleet for Materials Discovery

The traditional paradigm for materials discovery has been recently expanded to incorporate substantial data driven research. With the intent to accelerate the development and the deployment of new technologies, the AFLOW Fleet for computational materials design automates high-throughput first principles calculations, and provides tools for data verification and dissemination for a broad community of users. AFLOW incorporates different computational modules to robustly determine thermodynamic stability, electronic band structures, vibrational dispersions, thermo-mechanical properties and more. The AFLOW data repository is publicly accessible online at aflow.org, with more than 1.7 million materials entries and a panoply of queryable computed properties. Tools to programmatically search and process the data, as well as to perform online machine learning predictions, are also available.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
