    Topography influence on horizontal distribution of ichthyoplankton in neritic and oceanic waters in the surroundings of Cape Palos - Hormigas Islands marine reserve (Murcia, southeast Spain)

    The present study examines the relationships between the horizontal distribution of ichthyoplankton populations and submarine topography, in both neritic and oceanic waters of Cape Palos - Hormigas Islands Marine Reserve (southeast Spain). Larvae from self-spawners (Sardina pilchardus, Walbaum, 1792; Gobiidae and Sparidae) constituted the shallow community which dominated neritic waters, whereas larvae of Myctophidae (Benthosema glaciale, Reinhardt, 1837, and Lampanyctinae) constituted another community present over the slope and beyond it. Such distribution is strongly related to bathymetry and imitated adult distribution. Variations of this general model along the coast reflects variations in slope width. Ichthyoplancton distribution suggested the presence of a haline front in the zone, such as the one described in the Catalan and Balearic Seas, responsible for limited dispersal (coast-ocean) of larval fishes (Sabatés, 1990).El presente estudio muestra la relación existente entre la distribución horizontal de los poblamientos de ictioplancton y la topografía submarina, en aguas neríticas y oceánicas del entorno de la reserva marina de cabo de Palos - islas Hormigas. Las larvas de peces que frezan sobre la plataforma (Sardina pilchardus Walbaum, 1792; Gobiidae y Sparidae) dominaron las estaciones someras, mientras que las larvas de Myctophidae (Benthosema glaciale, Reinhardt, 1837 y Lampanyctinae) constituyeron un poblamiento que dominó las estaciones situadas sobre y por fuera del talud continental. Esta distribución horizontal de los poblamientos de ictioplancton determinada por la batimetría, refleja la distribución de los adultos. Por otro lado, las variaciones en la estructura de la comunidad de larvas a lo largo de la costa responden a cambios en la amplitud de la plataforma.     Modelling physical characteristics of river habitats

    The physical characteristics of river habitats constitute the setting in which fluvial biota dwell and thrive. Determining the spatial and temporal patterns of physical habitat characteristics and the main factors that control them is extremely important to increase the efficiency of river management, conservation, and restoration. This study determined spatial patterns of physical habitat characteristics for Atlantic and Mediterranean rivers in northern Spain and developed a river classification based on hydromorphological characteristics. Data gathered from almost 600 sites following a modified version of the River Habitat Survey methodology were used. In addition to the usual River Habitat Survey variables, the sequence of hydromorphologic units (i.e., areas exhibiting similar hydraulic characteristics, in terms of water velocity and depth), water depths, and widths were recorded. Unmodified reaches were selected computing the Habitat Modification Score. Multiple Linear Regression models were employed to test relationships between Principal Component Analyses that summarized physical river habitat characteristics with ecological relevance and environmental variables (i.e., climate, topography, land cover, and geology) at different spatial scales and used to predict physical habitat attributes for all river reaches. The density of hydromorphologic units, flow turbulence, substrate size, and channel dimensions were able to discriminate river classes within the river network, with topography being the main environmental driver of habitat characteristics (although climate, geology, and land cover were also relevant).     The present work justifies the change in theoretical approach required to use the concepts, principles and methods of artificial intelligence and computational science in order to deal with problems centered in social systems, such as studying the relation between human occupation and social stability and the validation of hypotheses about sociocybernetics strategies applied to governability. In order to model and study human occupation as a complex system, this document describes the autonomous components and the set of behaviors whose simultaneous and concurrent occurrence produce dynamical bifurcations (chaos) and emerging events in the Human Occupation, understood as a complex system between the triad: people - occupations - contexts, which expresses sensitive phenomena, impossible to be known completely and univocally. The components of the occupation are developed conceptually and relations of composition and condition of the given behaviors between these components are established, in order to establish human occupation as a complex system and in such a way that decision making and the prediction of occupational dynamics and behaviors in the individual and social levels can be modeled and simulated

    Hydrotherapy as a recovery strategy after exercise: a pragmatic controlled trial

    Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01765387Background Our aim was to evaluate the recovery effects of hydrotherapy after aerobic exercise in cardiovascular, performance and perceived fatigue. Methods A pragmatic controlled repeated measures; single-blind trial was conducted. Thirty-four recreational sportspeople visited a Sport-Centre and were assigned to a Hydrotherapy group (experimental) or rest in a bed (control) after completing a spinning session. Main outcomes measures including blood pressure, heart rate, handgrip strength, vertical jump, self-perceived fatigue, and body temperature were assessed at baseline, immediately post-exercise and post-recovery. The hypothesis of interest was the session*time interaction. Results The analysis revealed significant session*time interactions for diastolic blood pressure (P=0.031), heart rate (P=0.041), self perceived fatigue (P=0.046), and body temperature (P=0.001); but not for vertical jump (P=0.437), handgrip (P=0.845) or systolic blood pressure (P=0.266). Post-hoc analysis revealed that hydrotherapy resulted in recovered heart rate and diastolic blood pressure similar to baseline values after the spinning session. Further, hydrotherapy resulted in decreased self-perceived fatigue after the spinning session. Conclusions Our results support that hydrotherapy is an adequate strategy to facilitate cardiovascular recovers and perceived fatigue, but not strength, after spinning exercise

    The development of a stakeholder-based scale for measuring corporate social responsibility in the banking industry.

    ABSTRACT: Research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has notably increased in recent years and many scales for measuring CSR image have been developed in academic literature. Due to the contextual character recognized in the implementation of CSR strategies, in this paper a new scale based on stakeholder theory is developed to evaluate customers’ perception regarding the CSR performance of their banking service providers. The proposal of reliable measurement tools for evaluating customers’ perception is especially relevant for companies because of their significant role in influencing the design and implementation of corporate strategies. Results demonstrate the reliability and validity of this new scale in two different samples. In the banking industry, CSR includes corporate responsibilities toward customers, shareholders, employees, society, and all legal and ethical requirements of banking institutions. Nevertheless, different kinds of banking institutions have specific CSR images, which reveal different strategic approaches to CSR

    To pay or not to pay? Business owners’ tax morale:testing a neo-institutional framework in a transition environment

    In order to understand how the environment influences business owner/managers’ attitudes towards tax morale, we build a theoretical model based on a neo-institutionalist framework. Our model combines three complementary perspectives on institutions—normative, cultural–cognitive and regulatory–instrumental. This enables a broader understanding of factors that influence business owner–managers’ attitudes towards tax evasion. We test the resulting hypotheses using regression analysis on survey data on business owner/managers in Latvia—a transition country, which has undergone massive institutional changes since it was part of the Soviet Union over 25 years ago. We find that legitimacy of the tax authorities and the government (normative dimension), feeling of belonging to the nation (cultural–cognitive dimension) and perceptions of the risk and severity of punishment (regulatory–instrumental dimension) are all associated with higher tax morale for business owners and managers

    Dismorfología, Citogenética y Clínica: Resultados de estudios sobre los datos del ECEMCUnder the term "Epidermolysis Bullosa" (EB), there is a heterogeneous group of vesicular disorders that are generally congenital and of genetic origin, and affect skin and often mucosas. It is remarkable the extreme fragility of these epithelia; the vesicles arise spontaneously as well as induced by even slight trauma or the influence of high temperatures. Their content is sero-hemorrhagic and in the scarring can be very difficult. As a consecuence of the scarring processes, joint contractures and fusion of digits (pseudo-syndactyly) can occur. Pathogenetically, EB is caused by abnormal blistering at the basement membrane zone in the dermal-epidermal attachment zone and its surroundings. This is due to alterations in the attachment complexes, and some mutations have been identified in a total of 10 genes expressed in such level. Four main types of EB can be distinguished (simple, junctional, dystrophic and hemidesmosomal), depending on the level at which the cleavage that forms the bulla takes place, although about 30 subtypes have been described. The clinical characteristics or optic microscopy are not adequate for diagnosis, and it is mandatory to perform electron microscopy, immunofluorescent and immunohistochemical studies, as well as mutation analysis if available. Regarding the epidemiological aspects, in the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC), since 1976 up to December 2004, a total of 2,204,264 liveborn infants were controlled and, among them 27 cases have been identified, for a minimum frequency of 0.12 per 10,000 (95% confidence interval:0.08-0.18). It seems generally accepted that the determination of the frequency of EB is subject to multiple biases and registration of cases is always incomplete. We have also reviewed the issues related to management of EB patients by clinicians.N

    Down-regulation of TM4SF is associated with the metastatic potential of gastric carcinoma TM4SF members in gastric carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical significance of TM4SF members CD9, CD63 and CD82 in human gastric carcinoma.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>By employing RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, we studied the expression of CD9, CD63 and CD82 in 49 paired tissue specimens of normal gastric mucosa and carcinoma. All tissues were obtained from patients who underwent curative surgery.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All normal gastric epithelium and gastric ulcer tissues strongly expressed transcripts and proteins of CD9, CD63 and CD82 as compared with corresponding controls. We found a significant correlation between CD63 mRNA level and different pM statuses (P = 0.036). Carcinomas in M0 stage revealed a stronger expression of CD63 than carcinomas in M1 stage. Expression of CD9 protein was found significantly stronger in pN0, pM0 than in advanced pN stages (P = 0.03), pM1 (P = 0.013), respectively. We found the relationship between CD63 expression, gender (p = 0.09) and nodal status (p = 0.028), respectively. Additionally, advanced and metastasized tumor tissues revealed significantly down-regulated CD82 protein expression (p = 0.033 and p = 0, respectively), which correlated with the tumor pTNM stage (p = 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The reduction of CD9, CD63 and CD82 expression are indicators for the metastatic potential of gastric carcinoma cells. Unlike their expression in other tumor types, the constitutive expression of CD63 may indicate that this factor does play a direct role in human gastric carcinogenesis.</p
