Recent results from NA61/SHINE and comparison to NA49

The NA61/SHINE experiment aims to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study properties of the onset of deconfinement. It also performs precise hadron production measurements for the neutrino and cosmic rays experiments. These goals are being achieved by measurements of hadron production properties in nucleus-nucleus, proton-proton and proton/pion-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and size of the colliding nuclei. This contribution presents preliminary results from the NA61 ion program on single-particle spectra and identified particle multiplicity fluctuations in p+p interactions at the CERN SPS. Comparisons with results from p+p and Pb+Pb collisions obtained by the NA49 experiment are shown

Multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons in p+p interactions at SPS energies

Study of energy and system size fluctuations of identified hadrons is one of the key goals of NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS. Results may allow to discover the critical point (CP) of strongly interacting matter as well as to uncover properties of the onset of deconfinement (OD). But fluctuations exhibit numerous other sources starting from most basic ones like volume effects and conservation laws. NA49 seems to observe fluctuations related to CP in collisions of medium size nuclei at top SPS energy. However, this result will remain inconclusive until systematic data on energy and system size dependence will be available. Moreover, fluctuations in p+p as well as in Pb+Pb interactions should be better understood. In this contribution results on multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons in p+p interactions at the CERN SPS energies will be presented. The NA61 data will be compared with the corresponding results from central Pb+Pb collisions of NA49 in the common acceptance region of both experiments. Краківсько-Львівські наукові портрети професорів фізики ХІХ – першої половини ХХ ст. та їхні книжкові зібрання

W XIX i XX wieku do biblioteki Gabinetu Fizycznego, a później Zakładu Fizyki Doświadczalnej UJ, trafiły księgozbiory profesorów fizyki doświadczalnej, którzy swoją działalność naukową prowadzili zarówno we Lwowie, jak i w Krakowie. Są to książki naukowe zgromadzone przez czterech uczonych: Stefana Kuczyńskiego, Augusta Witkowskiego, Mariana Smoluchowskiego i Konstantego Zakrzewskiego – wybitnych fizyków, niezwykłych biory stały się przedmiotem badań proweniencyjnych prowadzonych na potrzeby niniejszego wystąpienia. Podczas komputerowego opracowywania książek w Bibliotece Wydziału Fizyki, Astronomii i Informatyki UJ zwrócono uwagę na olbrzymią wartość historyczną tych kolekcji. Obecnie możemy dołączyć jeszcze jeden wniosek: kolekcje profesorskie są odzwierciedleniem krakowsko-lwowskich życiorysów uczonych, pokazują ich indywidualne osiągnięcia naukowe i wskazują na związki uczonych ze środowiskami naukowym zarówno Krakowa, jak i Lwowa.In the 19th and the 20th century, the library of the Physics Cabinet, later library of the Institute of Empire Physics, received book collections of experimental physics professors, who were leading their researches both in Krakow and Lviv. There are scientific books collected by four researchers: Stefan Kuczyński, August Witkowski, Marian Soluchowski and Konstanty Zakrzewski – talented physicists, extraordinary researchers. It is no wonder that these collections turned out to be the object of principle of provenance our paper. During computerization of books in the Library of the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Jagiellonian University special attention was drawn to the enormous historic value of these collections. Nowadays we can add one more conclusion: professors' collections are describing works and biographies of researchers from Krakow and Lviv, indicate their personal achievements and relationships with scientific environments of both cities. Під час комп’ютерного опрацювання і дигіталізації увагу привернула велика цінність цих видань. При підготовці доповіді проведено дослідження провенієнцій. Колекції професорів віддзеркалюють краківсько-львівські сторінки біографій учених, показують їхні індивідуальні досягнення і особливості зв’язків і взаємин у науковому середовищі двох міст

Book evolution or library revolution? : one case study

Dokonano krótkiej prezentacji niektórych polskich i zagranicznych otwartych repozytoriów wiedzy, w których są gromadzone materiały z nauk ścisłych, zwłaszcza z fizyki. Pokazano, w jaki sposób naukowcy z Instytutu Fizyki UJ angażują się w ruch Open Access, podkreślając, że są oni zarówno twórcami, jak i użytkownikami otwartych zasobów edukacyjnych. Na podstawie obserwacji prowadzonych w Bibliotece Instytutu Fizyki UJ prześledzono, jak zmieniały się potrzeby informacyjne użytkowników, zwłaszcza studentów pierwszego i drugiego roku kierunków matematyczno-przyrodniczych, uczestniczących w zajęciach I Pracowni Fizycznej. Zwrócono uwagę na zmiany zachowań informacyjnych czytelników, które były spowodowane najpierw opracowaniem i wydaniem podręcznika I Pracownia fizyczna, pod redakcją A. Magiery, a później udostępnieniem treści tej publikacji na stronie internetowej I Pracowni Fizycznej UJ. Wykorzystując wyniki badań statystycznych i obserwacje prowadzone wśród rzeczywistych i potencjalnych użytkowników biblioteki, dokonano próby określenia relacji między tradycyjnymi formami publikowania a rozpowszechnianiem otwartych zasobów w sieci.A short presentation of some Polish and foreign open knowledge repositories which collect literature in science, first of all in physics. It shows the ways in which researchers from the Institute of Physics at the Jagiellonian University are involved in Open Access initiatives and emphasizes that researchers are both creators and users of open educational resources. Based on the observation made at the Library of Physics at the Jagiellonian University, changes of information needs of the library users, first of all students of the first and second year of study in mathematical sciences who participated in the First Workshop in Physics, has been discussed. A case study was conducted to observe changing patterns of use of the handbook I Pracownia fizyczna [The first workshop in physics] edited by A. Magiera. At first the handbook was published in print and afterwards it was made accessible on-line from the University home page. Observation and research into the use of that one document (in printed and e-version) by real and potential users of the library resulted in an attempt to determine relationships between traditional forms of publication and spreading of open network resources

Uzbrojenie i wyposażenie sił Irlandzkiej Armii Republikańskiej podczas wojny o niepodległość Irlandii w latach 1919–1921

W artykule analizowana jest kwestia logistyki oraz zaplecza wojny o nie-podległość Irlandii w latach 1919–1921. Badane kwestie to: stan finansów obu stron konfliktu oraz metody pozyskiwania funduszy na prowadzenie wojny, kwestia broni palnej, jej pozyskiwania, produkcji, a także zastosowanie środków wybuchowych. Zbadane zostały środki transportu używane przez obie strony oraz przeanalizowano ich wpływ na zmiany w taktyce walki. Opisano także problemy związane z pomocą medyczną, umundurowaniem i aprowizacją. Praca oparta jest na relacjach świadków wydarzeń zebranych przez Biuro Historii Militarnej Irlandii.The article presents an analysis of the logistics and the supply base of the Irish side of the conflict during the Tan War. The issues examined are: the state of the finances of both sides of the conflict and the methods of raising funds needed to wage war; the matter of firearms and acquiring them; production and use of the explosives. Means of transport used by both sides are also considered. as well as medical assistance, uniforms and provisioning. The article is based on witnesses’ testimonies gathered. by the Bureau of the Military History
