Disaster Risk Reduction at UNESCO Global Geoparks and Biosphere Reserves

    Get PDF
UNESCO Global Geoparks and Biosphere Reserves are natural UNESCO designated sites that promote sustainable development and focus on the protection of natural and cultural heritage or the conservation and sustainable use of geological resources and biodiversity. More than 800 of these natural UNESCOdesignated sites may be partly or entirely exposed to natural hazards and extreme weather events which can potentially impact the communities living in or near the sites and their livelihoods. Because of their high cultural and symbolic value, the impact of the loss or damage of a natural UNESCO-designated site can resonate across the world. At the same time, these iconic sites have tremendous potential as platforms to share knowledge on Disaster Risk Reduction. Many UNESCO-designated sites have community and tourismoriented programmes to raise awareness about the source of natural hazards, associated risks, and ways to reduce their impact

The scientific article studies and analyzes words of the Russian old-timers’ dialects of Yakutia, whose lexical meaning is associated with their culture and traditional way of life. The above-mentioned words express culture-bound items that help survive in the harsh conditions of northeast Russia. It is relevant to consider word meanings since modern linguistics has got a second wind and currently examines language processes with due regard to the culture and history of native speakers and dialect users. Such scientific studies show a certain culture from a new perspective and fully reveal the connection between language and culture. The Russian old-timers’ dialects of Yakutia contain unique words evaluating a person (hardworking/lazy; good-natured/evil; smart/stupid) and denoting hunting methods and means (active/passive; means/tools, components/materials for producing hunting tools). The authors of the article have grouped the obtained data according to the frequency of use. This classification reflects the diversity and richness of the words used by Russian old-timers. The vocabulary related to person nominations and nominations of hunting methods and means represents a significant layer in the linguistic world image of Yakutian old-timers

In this article, the results of the development of the functional fish culinary product “Thorny Skate and Cod Pie” are presented. A traditional recipe was used for making the yeast dough for the pie. The pie filling recipe was designed using Fuzzy Logic in the Matlab software package.Optimized parametersfor the selected sensory evaluation of the pie were calculated. On the basis of a priori information, key components of the filling (including the fraction of the fish components and skate meat) were chosen as the factors of interest. According to the simulation results, the optimal values werea 50/50 percentage for the first and the second factor respectively, and this providedthe maximum organoleptic assessment (five points on a five-point scale). The simulation results were compared with the results of the organoleptic evaluation of the pie made according to the optimized recipe, and their sufficient convergence was shown. The indicators of mass fraction of amine nitrogen and nitrogen of volatile bases was studied, as well as the microbiological safety indicators of flour fish culinary products, in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union 040/2016 ”On the safety of fish products”. The results showed a high efficiency of the shock freezing of the semi-finished product, brought to semi-readiness, for long-term storage (120 days at a temperature no higher than minus 18 ∘C), without reducing the quality or safety of the pie. The product had a cholesterol content from 220 to 260 mg%, which allowed it to be classified as functional. The nutritional values of the product (mass fraction of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and amino acid composition) are presented. Keywords: thornyskate, functional product, pie with thornyskate and cod, shock freezin

Ways for Recycling of Quartz Waste in the Production of Silicate Materials

    Get PDF
The technological properties of quartz waste associated with the clay deposit are investigated by way of emission spectral analysis, petrography and X-ray phase analysis. This study considers the possibility of quartz waste utilization in the production of dry building mixtures as a filler, magnesia-quartz proppants as a raw material component, cement as a siliceous component, fine ceramics as a partially fluxing and exhausting component, silicate brick as the main raw material. In the production of glass and glassware it is possible to make use of the quartz waste as a glass-forming component including silicate blocks after refining for the Al2O3 and Fe2O3 content. Quartz waste can be recommended as molding sand after refining for the contents of Fe2O3, Na2O, K2O, MgO, CaO. Improvement of the properties of the quartz waste can be achieved by ways of elutriation to remove the clay component as well as magnetic separation to remove magnetic compounds of iron. Keywords: quartz waste, proppants, glass, cement, silicate brick, building mixtures, fine ceramics, molding sand, recyclin

Developing the Russian Index of Elderly Population Well-Being: Principles and Conceptual Framework

    Get PDF
As a multi-faceted process population aging generates various socio-economic and psycho-physiological challenges and significantly influences the government socio-economic policy. It requires the development and practical application of new assessment tools based on the economic and sociological data statistics to describe the current state of the society specifying variables and indicators relevant to the measurement and management of the main aspects of older people well-being. The article presents a comparative analysis of methods to assess such complex socio-economic and psycho-physiological phenomena as the elderly population's well-being. The study focuses on the research trends in the development of the elderly population well-being evaluation tools and composite indices as well-being of older people assessment techniques. The paper addresses the evolution of the concept “well-being of the elderly population” together with the evolution of the term “well-being” itself with the latter one closely connected to the concept of human development. The authors draw on the causes of interest for comparative assessment methodologies of the well-being of elderly generation against the backdrop of the global trends of demographic aging of the world population. As assessment tools joining a set of objective and subjective indicators in one evaluation scale, composite indices are researched as comparative methods for the purpose of well-being analysis. They are described in terms of their decomposition into domains and indicators. Finally, the paper formulates the principles of development of the Russian Elderly Well-being Index and analyses the possible domains for the elderly population well-being assessment

Population ageing is a natural process with irreversible consequences. Therefore, it has become an important agenda for economic and social policy. It requires the development and practical implementation of new tools for the integrated assessment of the main aspects of the elderly generation economic and social well-being. We account for over 50 years of active academic research work in the area of enhanced elderly population’s well-being assessment as a complex socio-economic phenomenon. The phenomenon may comprise a number of components for evaluation on the basis of both quantitative objective criteria and qualitative subjective criteria. The paper addresses the question of using composite indices such as the AgeWatch Index and the Active Ageing Index for assessing the well-being of the elderly generation in the Russian Federation. The authors also debate the issue of the availability and comparability of the existing data for the Active Ageing Index calculation for Russia. The scope of the analysis falls within national Russian statistical databases in order to determine the possibility of the correct choice of relevant indicators from the sources available for the AAI calculation according to its original methodology
