Risk and resilience in practice: Cultural heritage buildings

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] The recent occurrence of devastating natural and man-made hazardous events has raised the awareness ofnumerous international institutions connected to dis-aster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster risk manage-ment (DRM). The development of new risk assessmentand mitigation strategies is, therefore, internationallyencouraged, particularly by focussing on the identifica-tion of the most vulnerable elements to reduce theirvulnerability, while enhancing preparedness and recov-ery capacity. In the particular case of cultural heritage, international frameworks and programmes for DRR areincreasingly echoing concerns about its protection fromdisasters given its irreplaceable value for society.Coherent recommendations for assessing and mitigat-ing disaster risk in the built cultural heritage should, therefore, be considered a priority. Still, in order to beable to define more adequate mitigation strategies andoutline appropriate conservation and restoration inter-ventions that will reduce vulnerabilities and enhancethe overall resilience, the protection of cultural heritagebuildings should be based on a comprehensive knowl-edge of risks. Bacterial vaginosis has been associated with prematurity and other perinatal complications. However, the efficacy of the treatment for preventing such complications has not yet been well established. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of treatment for bacterial vaginosis on a low-risk population of Brazilian pregnant women, in order to prevent prematurity and other perinatal complications. Observational retrospective cohort study, at the Obstetric and Gynecology Department, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). Vaginal bacterioscopy results from 785 low-risk pregnant women were studied. Three different groups of women were identified: 580 without bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy, 134 with bacterial vaginosis treated using imidazoles (metronidazole, tinidazole, or secnidazole) during pregnancy, and 71 with bacterial vaginosis not treated during pregnancy. The diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis was based on Nugent's criteria, from the vaginal bacterioscopy performed during the first prenatal care visit. The frequency of prematurity was 5.5% among the women without bacterial vaginosis, 22.5% among those with untreated bacterial vaginosis and 3.7% among those with treated bacterial vaginosis. The risk ratios for perinatal complications were significantly higher in the group with untreated bacterial vaginosis: premature rupture of membranes, 7.5 (95% CI: 1.9-34.9); preterm labor, 3.4 (95% CI: 1.4-8.1); preterm birth, 6.0 (95% CI: 1.9-19.7); and low birth weight, 4.2 (95% CI: 1.2-14.3). The treatment of bacterial vaginosis significantly reduced the rates of prematurity and other perinatal complications among these low-risk Brazilian pregnant women, regardless of the history of previous preterm delivery.123108-1

ABSTRACT Objective: patient satisfaction is a complex and multifactorial concept that has gained much importance in the last decades, through the accreditation processes. In addition, patient satisfaction influences the relationship with the multidisciplinary team and, even, adherence to the proposed treatment. The patient's perception of the quality of postoperative recovery is one of the components that influence this satisfaction. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the factors related to the anesthetic and surgical procedure that interfere in the patient's perception of the quality of postoperative recovery. Method: during the period between March 1 and July 31, 2018, this integrative review researched the descriptors in the databases and found 52,000 citations of articles published between January 2011 and July 2018. Through the Boolean operators, the search terms were combined and the duplicate articles were deleted; 256 articles were evaluated and 51 were selected for this review. Conclusion: the use of drugs and techniques that minimize hospital stay or prevent side effects such as pain, nausea and vomiting, improves the patient's perception of the quality of recovery

Characterising mitochondrial capture in an Iberian Shrew

Mitochondrial introgression raises questions of biogeography and of the extent of reproductive isolation and natural selection. Previous phylogenetic work on the Sorex araneus complex revealed apparent mitonuclear discordance in Iberian shrews, indicating past hybridisation of S. granari-us and the Carlit chromosomal race of S. araneus, enabling introgression of the S. araneus mitochondrial genome into S. granarius. To further study this, we genetically typed 61 S. arane-us/coronatus/granarius from localities in Portugal, Spain, France, and Andorra at mitochondrial, autosomal, and sex-linked loci and combined our data with the previously published sequences. Our data are consistent with earlier data indicating that S. coronatus and S. granarius are the most closely related of the three species, confirming that S. granarius from the Central System mountain range in Spain captured the mitochondrial genome from a population of S. araneus. This mito-chondrial capture event can be explained by invoking a biogeographical scenario whereby S. araneus was in contact with S. granarius during the Younger Dryas in central Iberia, despite the two species currently having disjunct distributions. We discuss whether selection favoured S. granarius with an introgressed mitochondrial genome. Our data also suggest recent hybridisation and in-trogression between S. coronatus and S. granarius, as well as between S. araneus and S. coronatus

The InBIO barcoding initiative database: DNA barcodes of Iberian Trichoptera, documenting biodiversity for freshwater biomonitoring in a Mediterranean hotspot

    Get PDF
The Trichoptera are an important component of freshwater ecosystems. In the Iberian Peninsula, 380 taxa of caddisflies are known, with nearly 1/3 of the total species being endemic in the region. A reference collection of morphologically identified Trichoptera specimens, representing 142 Iberian taxa, was constructed. The InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI) Trichoptera 01 dataset contains records of 438 sequenced specimens. The species of this dataset correspond to about 37% of Iberian Trichoptera species diversity. Specimens were collected between 1975 and 2018 and are deposited in the IBI collection at the CIBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, Portugal) or in the collection Marcos A. González at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain).Twenty-nine species, from nine different families, were new additions to the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD). A success identification rate of over 80% was achieved when comparing morphological identifications and DNA barcodes for the species analysed. This encouraging step advances incorporation of informed Environmental DNA tools in biomonitoring schemes, given the shortcomings of morphological identifications of larvae and adult Caddisflies in such studies. DNA barcoding was not successful in identifying species in six Trichoptera genera: Hydropsyche (Hydropsychidae), Athripsodes (Leptoceridae), Wormaldia (Philopotamidae), Polycentropus (Polycentropodidae) Rhyacophila (Rhyacophilidae) and Sericostoma (Sericostomatidae). The high levels of intraspecific genetic variability found, combined with a lack of a barcode gap and a challenging morphological identification, rendered these species as needing additional studies to resolve their taxonomy
