Bargaining Dreams and Myths: The Relationship between the Literacy Myth, the American Dream, and the Immigrant Bargain

    Get PDF
The following research thesis explores the ideologies surrounding the literacy myth, the American Dream, and the immigrant bargain and how these terms affect the lives and literacy practices of American immigrants and their pursuit of higher education. Research from the field of rhetoric and composition and social and political sciences is surveyed as a means to define the relationship between all three terms and trace how their ideologies affect those from immigrant backgrounds. This thesis uncovers capitalistic ideologies present in the myth, the Dream, and the bargain that romanticize the role of schooling and labor in attaining upward mobility and have become inherent in the lives of American immigrants and those from immigrant backgrounds

    SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 at VLBI: a compact radio galaxy in a narrow-line Seyfert 1

We present VLBI observations, carried out with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (EVN), of SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3, a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RLNLS1) characterized by a steep radio spectrum. The source, compact at Very Large Array (VLA) resolution, is resolved on the milliarcsec scale, showing a central region plus two extended structures. The relatively high brightness temperature of all components (5x10^6-1.3x10^8 K) supports the hypothesis that the radio emission is non-thermal and likely produced by a relativistic jet and/or small radio lobes. The observed radio morphology, the lack of a significant core and the presence of a low frequency (230 MHz) spectral turnover are reminiscent of the Compact Steep Spectrum sources (CSS). However, the linear size of the source (~0.5kpc) measured from the EVN map is lower than the value predicted using the turnover/size relation valid for CSS sources (~6kpc). This discrepancy can be explained by an additional component not detected in our observations, accounting for about a quarter of the total source flux density, combined to projection effects. The low core-dominance of the source (CD<0.29) confirms that SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 is not a blazar, i.e. the relativistic jet is not pointing towards the observer. This supports the idea that SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 may belong to the "parent population" of flat-spectrum RLNLS1 and favours the hypothesis of a direct link between RLNLS1 and compact, possibly young, radio galaxies.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Macromineral requirements by beef cattle under pasture supplementation.

The objective of this work was to determine macromineral requirements by Zebu steers grazing Brachiaria decumbens supplemented with concentrate. It was used 24 non-castrated steers, at an average age of 7 months and at initial average weight 180 kg. Eight control animals were slaughtered for determining initial body composition. The 16 remaining animals were divided in four four-animal plots, in a complete random design. Each plot received mineral mixture or supplements at the levels 0.75; 1.50 or 2.25 kg/animal/day. The right half-carcass of eight animals, two per group, was dissected in muscle, fat and bones and all body constituents were weighted for determination of empty body weight and body composition. Net requirements of calcium and phosphorus for an animal at 400 kg body weight were 11.13 g and 5.40 g, respectively. To estimate dietary requirements of maintenance and after, sum them to dietary requirements for gain in order to obtain total dietary requirements, it was adopted endogenous losses and bioavailability present in literature for each mineral macroelement. Total dietary requirement for calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium for a 400-kg BW animal with 1.0-kg daily weight gain were 34.59; 17.36; 7.82; 5.19 and 41.11 g/day, respectively. Macromineral requirements by beef cattle under pasture supplementation are similar to those recommended by BR-Corte for beef cattle in feedlots

New simple digital self-calibration technique for pipeline ADCs using the internal thermal noise

IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, pp. 232 – 235, Seattle, EUAThis paper describes a new digital-domain selfcalibration technique for high-speed pipeline A/D converters using the internal thermal noise as input stimulus. This lowamplitude noise is amplified and recycled by the ADC itself and, due to the successive foldings, it is naturally converted into uniform noise. This noise is then used to calculate the required calibrating-codes. As an example, the calibration of a 13-bit pipeline ADC shows that the overall linearity can be significantly improved using this technique

Emotion as a human experience: the psychotherapist’s perspective

Observer-based controller design with disturbance feedforward framework for formation control of satellites

    Get PDF
Copyright © 2015 The Institution of Engineering and TechnologyIn this study, a bespoke sliding mode non-linear observer and a linear controller framework is proposed for achieving robust formation control of a cluster of satellites in the case of a circular reference orbit. Exploiting the structure of the satellite dynamics, a non-linear observer is proposed based on super-twist sliding mode ideas. The observer estimates the states and any unknown bounded disturbances in ‘finite time’. The stability properties of the observers are demonstrated using Lyapunov techniques. A distributed controller, based on the estimated states and the relative position output information, depending on the underlying communication topology, is proposed. A polytopic representation of the collective dynamics which depends on the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix associated with the communication topology is used to synthesise the gains of the proposed control laws. A simulation example is used to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach

Verifying compliance with ballast water standards : a decision-theoretic approach

    Get PDF
We construct credible intervals to estimate the mean organism (zooplankton and phytoplankton) concentration in ballast water via a decision-theoretic approach. To obtain the required optimal sample size, we use a total cost minimization criterion defined as the sum of the sampling cost and the Bayes risk either under a Poisson or a negative binomial model for organism counts, both with a gamma prior distribution. Such credible intervals may be employed to verify whether the ballast water discharged from a ship is in compliance with international standards. We also conduct a simulation study to evaluate the credible interval lengths associated with the proposed optimal sample sizes
