    Experimental Tests of Non-Perturbative Pion Wave Functions

    We use the transverse-momentum dependence of the cross section for diffractive dissociation of high energy pions to two jets to study some non-perturbative Light-Cone wave functions of the pion. We compare the predictions for this distribution by Gaussian and Coulomb wave functions as well as the wave function derived from solution of the Light-Cone Hamiltonian in the Singlet Model. We conclude that this experimentally measured information provides a powerful tool for these studies.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Causal Interactive Links Between Presence and Fear in Virtual Reality Height Exposure

    Virtual reality plays an increasingly important role in research and therapy of pathological fear. However, the mechanisms how virtual environments elicit and modify fear responses are not yet fully understood. Presence, a psychological construct referring to the ‘sense of being there’ in a virtual environment, is widely assumed to crucially influence the strength of the elicited fear responses, however, causality is still under debate. The present study is the first that experimentally manipulated both variables to unravel the causal link between presence and fear responses. Height-fearful participants (N = 49) were immersed into a virtual height situation and a neutral control situation (fear manipulation) with either high versus low sensory realism (presence manipulation). Ratings of presence and verbal and physiological (skin conductance, heart rate) fear responses were recorded. Results revealed an effect of the fear manipulation on presence, i.e., higher presence ratings in the height situation compared to the neutral control situation, but no effect of the presence manipulation on fear responses. However, the presence ratings during the first exposure to the high quality neutral environment were predictive of later fear responses in the height situation. Our findings support the hypothesis that experiencing emotional responses in a virtual environment leads to a stronger feeling of being there, i.e., increase presence. In contrast, the effects of presence on fear seem to be more complex: on the one hand, increased presence due to the quality of the virtual environment did not influence fear; on the other hand, presence variability that likely stemmed from differences in user characteristics did predict later fear responses.     Transcriptional activity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa fhp promoter is dependent on two regulators in addition to FhpR

    The regulation of flavohemoglobin expression is complex and depending on its host organism requires a wide variety of different transcriptional regulators. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the flavohemoglobin (Fhp) and its cognate regulator FhpR form an NO-sensing and detoxifying system regulated by their common bidirectional promoter P fhp/P fhpR. The intergenic fhp-fhpR region of P. aeruginosa PAO1 was used as a bait to isolate proteins affecting the transcription of fhp and fhpR. In addition to the FhpR, we identified two previously uncharacterized P. aeruginosa proteins, PA0779 and PA3697. Both PA0779 and PA3697 were found to be essential for NO3 − and NO2 − induced P fhp activity under aerobic and low-oxygen conditions, and needed for the full function of P fhp/P fhpR as NO responsive regulatory circuit under aerobic conditions. In addition, we show that the transcriptional activity of P fhpR is highly inducible upon addition of SNP under aerobic conditions, but not by NO3 −, NO2 − or under low-oxygen conditions, supporting the findings that FhpR is not the only factor affecting flavohemoglobin expression in P. aeruginos

    The evolving landscape of software development increasingly prioritizes functionality, maintainability, and developer productivity. This typically comes hand in hand with the shortcoming that less focus is invested on optimizing for runtime performance of programs. However, optimizing for performance is an important task in time-critical domains. Additionally, optimizing for performance can be an important way of reducing actual hardware requirements and achieving a better ecological footprint. So, why not bringing program optimization closer to the software engineer and reducing the disconnect between profiling results and their interpretability? This poster presents a GPU-focused in-situ profiling approach that visualizes memory profiling metrics directly inside the source code and gives the software engineer an direct hint for identifying inefficient parts during development.     NKX3.1 immunohistochemistry and methylome profiling in mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: additional diagnostic value for a well-defined disease?

    Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare and highly aggressive tumour of soft tissue and bone that is defined by an underlying and highly specific fusion transcript involving HEY1 and NCOA2. Histologically, the tumours show a biphasic appearance consisting of an undifferentiated blue and round cell component as well as islands of highly differentiated cartilage. Particularly in core needle biopsies, the chondromatous component can be missed and the non-specific morphology and immunophenotype of the round cell component can cause diagnostic challenges. We applied NKX3.1 immunohistochemistry which was recently reported as a highly specific marker as well as methylome and copy number profiling to a set of 45 well characterised MCS cases to evaluate their potential diagnostic value. Methylome profiling revealed a highly distinct cluster for MCS. Notably, the findings were reproducible also when analysing the round cell and cartilaginous component separately. Furthermore, four outliers were identified by methylome profiling for which the diagnosis had to be revised. NKX3.1 immunohistochemistry showed positivity in 36% of tumours, the majority of which was rather focal and weak. Taken together, NKX3.1 expression showed a low sensitivity but a high specificity in our analysis. Methylome profiling on the other hand represents a sensitive, specific and reliable tool to support the diagnosis of MCS, particularly if only the round cell component is obtained in a biopsy and the diagnosis is not suspected. Furthermore, it can aid in confirming the diagnosis in case RNA sequencing for the HEY1::NCOA2 fusion transcript is not available

    Does Personality Affect the Probability That Piute Ground Squrriels (\u3cem\u3eUrocitellus Mollis\u3c/em\u3e) Will Be Shot by Recreational Hunters?

    Recreational shooting of Piute ground squirrels (Urocitellus mollis) in southern Idaho is an activity growing in popularity. One factor that may influence shooting success is the personality of individuals within a population. We hypothesized that bold individual ground squirrels would be more/less likely to be targeted by a hunter and would be more/less disturbed by gun fire. To test these hypotheses, we simulated recreational shooting to identify which personalities are more susceptible hunters and more responsive to gun fire. We preformed simulations in March of 2015 on a population of Piute ground squirrels with known personalities. Bold and shy individuals were coded by dying the fur of squirrels in a way distinguishable by observers during simulations which took place at three sites with varying vegetative cover. We recorded the frequency of detection of each personality type through a hunting scope. In addition, we observed the behavioral response (e.g. flee, vigilance, alarm call) of ground squirrels to a recording of a .22 caliber fire. We also identified whether raptors were attracted to the simulated shooting area for scavenging in response to the sound of the gun fire. We calculated whether the detection and behavioral responses of squirrel personalities in shooting simulations was disproportionate to that of the marked population. This information can lead to a greater understanding of the role of behavioral factors in the survival of Piute ground squirrels and provide insight into how recreational shooting could influence the personality landscape of a dominant prey species

    Habitat Features Predict the Distribution of Recreational Shooters in the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area

    The Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA) is a popular destination of many Treasure Valley residents. There, recreationists participate in various pastimes such as target shooting, recreational shooting/hunting, and wildlife viewing. However, these activities have the potential to interfere with one another. Recreational shooting of Piute ground squirrels (Urocitellus mollis) could affect prey availability and scavenging opportunities for associated raptor species, most notably local golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) populations. To assess possible interactions among shooters, prey and raptors, the spatial density and habitat preference of human shooters must be determined. We hypothesized that higher shooter density would be correlated with proximity to high-use roads and habitat with high visibility. To test this hypothesis, the spatial density and habitat preference of human shooters was determined. First, three routes of approximately 16 km each were established throughout the northwest section of the NCA through “hunter hotspots” of various habitat types. Routes were driven on weekends, starting in the morning, from February 28 to March 21, 2015. Data was collected opportunistically on all shooters observed including group size, demographics, location, and the habitat characteristics (e.g. proximity to roads and visibility) of shooting sites. These data were used to determine which habitat features best predicted shooting locations. This study may directly inform future research on golden eagle scavenging ecology, competition between hunters and eagles, and the potential for lead entry into the ecosystem through use of lead ammunition

    U7 snRNAs induce correction of mutated dystrophin pre-mRNA by exon skipping.

    Most cases of Duchenne muscular dystrophy are caused by dystrophin gene mutations that disrupt the mRNA reading frame. Artificial exclusion (skipping) of a single exon would often restore the reading frame, giving rise to a shorter, but still functional dystrophin protein. Here, we analyzed the ability of antisense U7 small nuclear (sn)RNA derivatives to alter dystrophin pre-mRNA splicing. As a proof of principle, we first targeted the splice sites flanking exon 23 of dystrophin pre-mRNA in the wild-type muscle cell line C2C12 and showed precise exon 23 skipping. The same strategy was then successfully adapted to dystrophic immortalized mdx muscle cells where exon-23-skipped dystrophin mRNA rescued dystrophin protein synthesis. Moreover, we observed a stimulation of antisense U7 snRNA expression by the murine muscle creatine kinase enhancer. These results demonstrate that alteration of dystrophin pre-mRNA splicing could correct dystrophin gene mutations by expression of specific U7 snRNA constructs

    Mejora del SGSST, para reducir el índice de riesgos laborales en la empresa SEMMAR MANUFACTURING SAC, Chimbote 2022

    El presente trabajo titulado “Mejora del SG-SST, para reducir el índice de riesgos laborales en SEMMAR MANUFACTURING S.A.C.”, busco reducir el índice de riesgos laborales mediante la mejora del SG-SST, aplicando la ley 29783 y aportando con la ISO 45001, fue de diseño: pre experimental de tipo aplicada con enfoque cuantitativo, se tomó muestras durante 6 meses, 3 meses antes y después. Se realizó la línea base y se pudo verificar que documentos hacían falta mejorar en la empresa, es por ello que se mejoró e implementó nuevos formatos en el caso de la ISO 45001. Se mejoró la IPER-C por área de trabajo y nueva línea base. Para el procesamiento de datos y la prueba de hipótesis se usó el software SPSS 27. En conclusión, se pudo determinar que la mejora del SG-SST basado en la ley 29783 y con aportación de la ISO 45001, sí redujo los riesgos laborales en un 78.1% en SEMMAR MANUFACTURING S.A.C
