A critical appraisal of phloem-mobile signals involved in tuber induction

    Get PDF
The identification of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) and several FT homologs as phloem-mobile proteins that regulate flowering has sparked the search for additional homologs involved in the long-distance regulation of other developmental processes. Given that flowering and tuber induction share regulatory pathways, the quest for long-distance tuberization signals has been further stimulated. Several tuberization regulators have been proposed as mobile molecules, including the FT family protein StSP6A, the plant growth regulators gibberellins and the microRNA miR172. Although some of these hypotheses are attractive and plausible, evidence that these molecules are transmissible in potato has yet to be obtained. Two mRNAs encoding transcription factors, StBEL5 and POTATO HOMEOBOX 1 (POTH1), are mobile and correlate with tuber induction. However, evidence that StBEL5 or POTH1 are required for tuberization is not available yet. Therefore, there are several good candidates for long-distance molecules in the tuberization process. Further research should test their role as systemic tuberization signals

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), visiting the coast of Ecuador from July to October to reproduce, have a very distinctive feature, their songs. These are repetitive sounds used for communication, reproduction and maintaining hierarchy among individuals. Only males perform appear to sing. These mammals are also very sensitive to sounds like sonar, boat noise or explosions in the deep sea, which results in avoidance or flight behavior. On July 10th 2017, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in Muisne, Esmeraldas, while humpback whale sounds were recorded nearby the epicenter. In order to analyze changes in song patterns a study of the structural changes of the songs before, immediately after and after the earthquake was conducted. For this analysis, a study of the communication measured by the significant units found in a minute of song and a statistical analysis was performed to observe changes in the peak frequency of the songs as well as to analyze the repetitions of each unit. Significant differences were found in terms of communication. Repetitions of units also varied, new units appeared after the earthquake and peak frequency increased when comparing between parameters. The results suggest that certain units can be associated to stress or chaos and the frequencies of the songs as well as the repetitions may help to preserve the communication while environmental noise is increasing.

    Get PDF
NOMAD Gallery

    Get PDF
NOMAD Gallery is a flash retailing business model that will seek to attract consumers with discretionary spending power but are unfamiliar with highly curated art experiences. Despite its size, the art market today is not easily accessible to younger generations, as it possesses several structural barriers to access (such as the need to know and develop relationships with Art galleries and curators). NOMAD Gallery’s value proposition is anchored on sharing culture and democratizing the access to art through playful and interactive pop-up galleries that exhibit artists from around the world in different seasonal settings and structured such that it provides a sustainable income for the artists and thegallery. Our proposal taps into each of our co-founder’s strengths in order to host two annual pop-ups experiences (one in the Hamptons in the summer, and one in Aspen in the winter) that will generate revenue through open-call tickets, event admission, artwork sale, and exclusive merchandise. Our pop-up events will seek to democratize the access to Art by adding interactive elements to the gallery setting, creating truly immersive experiences that bridge the gap between the physical and the online settings. Our business model will minimize our costs by employing temporary and seasonal employees, while tapping into “on-demand’ service providers for general administrative needs. We expect to break-even at year 1, achieving net revenues of ~$640,000. The ultimate goal for NOMAD Gallery is to demonstrate how innovation andexperimentation attuned to macro trends (intergenerational transfer of wealth) may help the art world to increase its connection with brands and consumers in the future

Effect of amaranth proteins on the RAS system: In vitro, in vivo and ex vivo assays

    Get PDF
The aim of this work was to analyse the hypotensive effect of amaranthprotein/peptides on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The mechanism of action of these peptides was studied in vivo and ex vivo. We also tested the effect of protection against gastrointestinal digestion (GID) exerted by an O:W emulsion on the integrity of the antihypertensive peptides. All samples tested produced a decrease in blood pressure (SBP). The animals treated with emulsion (GE) and emulsion+peptide (GE+VIKP) showed the most significant reduction in the SBP (42±2 mmHg and 35±2 mmHg, respectively). The results presented suggest that after GID, a variety of peptides with biological activities were released or were resistant to this process. These peptides play a role in the regulation of the SBP by acting on plasma ACE, plasma renin and the vascular system. These results support the use of amaranth protein/peptides in the elaboration of functional foods for hypertensive individuals.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The aim of the present research was to analyze the autonomic stress response of nursing students in a nursing Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE). We analyzed, in 41 s-year nursing degree students (20.1 ± 2.3 years), modifications in heart rate variability (HRV) to monitor the autonomic stress response before, during and after the 18 different scenarios of a complete OSCE. Heart rate mean response of nurse students was consistent with an anticipatory anxiety response at the beginning of the OSCE, showing a sympathetic nervous system activation, but HRV parameters show contradictory results. The most stressful OSCE station was the CPR maneuver, the stress response varying according to the station’s demands

The aim of the present research was to analyze those elements could influence on the learning process of the students, and the evaluation process of professors, during the development of clinical practices. For that, we analyze differences on the perception of difficulty, stress, and academic performance between students and teachers in a nursing Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). We analyze the different perceptions in 41 s-year nursing degree students (20.1 ± 2.3 years; 29 females and 12 males) and 21 nursing degree professors (39.1 ± 4.2 years) of the different scenarios that compose the OSCE, that were: BP+EKG, venipuncture, CPR, nutritional assessment, respiratory assessment, mobilization, and interprofessional scenario. After the statistical analysis we found that professors presented higher difficulty perceptions of venopunction, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and nutritional evaluation, as well as higher academic performance perception on all scenarios except nutritional evaluation than students. Students showed higher stress perceptions on venopunction, respiratory evaluation, mobility and interprofessional scenarios, as well as higher academic perception on nutritional evaluation than teachers. Professors presented higher difficulty and academic performance perceptions than students, and stress perception varies depending on the OSCE station between professors and students
