The baked clay “hornitos” (small furnaces) are pyric subterranean structures designed primarily to cook food.

Resveratrol and inflammatory bowel disease: the evidence so far

    Get PDF
Despite the fact that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has still no recognised therapy, treatments which have proven at least mildly successful in improving IBD symptoms include anti-inflammatory drugs and monoclonal antibodies targeting pro-inflammatory cytokines. Resveratrol, a natural (poly)phenol found in grapes, red wine, grape juice and several species of berries, has been shown to prevent and ameliorate intestinal inflammation. Here, we discuss the role of resveratrol in the improvement of inflammatory disorders involving the intestinal mucosa. The present review covers three specific aspects of resveratrol in the framework of inflammation: (i) its content in food; (ii) its intestinal absorption and metabolism; and (iii) its anti-inflammatory effects in the intestinal mucosa in vitro and in the very few in vivo studies present to date. Actually, if several studies have shown that resveratrol may down-regulate mediators of intestinal immunity in rodent models, only two groups have performed intervention studies in human subjects using resveratrol as an agent to improve IBD conditions. The effects of resveratrol should be further investigated by conducting well-designed clinical trials, also taking into account different formulations for the delivery of the bioactive compound

Measuring Population Transmission Potential for HIV: An Alternative Metric of Transmission Risk in Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) in the US

    Get PDF
Background Various metrics for HIV burden and treatment success [e.g. HIV prevalence, community viral load (CVL), population viral load (PVL), percent of HIV-positive persons with undetectable viral load] have important public health limitations for understanding disparities. Methods and Findings Using data from an ongoing HIV incidence cohort of black and white men who have sex with men (MSM), we propose a new metric to measure the prevalence of those at risk of transmitting HIV and illustrate its value. …See full text for complete abstract

The food contaminant deoxynivalenol, decreases intestinal barrier permeability and reduces claudin expression

The gastrointestinal tract represents the first barrier against food contaminants as well as the first target for these toxicants. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin that commonly contaminates cereals and causes various toxicological effects. Through consumption of contaminated cereals and cereal products, human and pigs are exposed to this mycotoxin. Using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo approaches, we investigated the effects of DON on the intestinal epithelium. We demonstrated that, in intestinal epithelial cell lines from porcine (IPEC-1) or human (Caco-2) origin, DON decreases trans-epithelial electric resistance (TEER) and increases in a time and dose-dependent manner the paracellular permeability to 4 kDa dextran and to pathogenic Escherichia Coli across intestinal cell monolayers. In pig explants treated with DON, we also observed an increased permeability of intestinal tissue. These alterations of barrier function were associated with a specific reduction in the expression of claudins, which was also seen in vivo in the jejunum of piglets exposed to DON-contaminated feed. In conclusion, DON alters claudin expression and decreases the barrier function of the intestinal epithelium. Considering that high levels of DON may be present in food or feed, consumption of DON-contaminated food/feed may induce intestinal damage and has consequences for human and animal health

JUMP-LANDING MECHANICS IN PATELLAR TENDINOPATHY IN ELITE JUNIOR BASKETBALL ATHLETES

The purpose of this study was to identify key modifiable jump-landing variables associated with patellar tendinopathy (PT). Thirty-six junior elite basketball players (18 men, 18 women) were recruited (8 PT, 11 controls, 17 excluded from statistical analysis). Three-dimensional (3D) landing technique during a stop-jump task and patellar tendon ultrasounds were recorded. A series of mixed-design factorial analyses of variance were used to determine any significant between-group differences. Athletes with PT utilised a lower ground reaction force (GRF) loading rate (LR) via increasing their time duration from initial foot-ground contact (IC) to peak vertical GRF (Fv). This strategy of a lower LR did not lead to those athletes with PT decreasing their peak GRF nor patellar tendon forces (FPT) in comparison to the controls

The Comparability of Men Who Have Sex With Men Recruited From Venue-Time-Space Sampling and Facebook: A Cohort Study

Background: Recruiting valid samples of men who have sex with men (MSM) is a key component of the US human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) surveillance and of research studies seeking to improve HIV prevention for MSM. Social media, such as Facebook, may present an opportunity to reach broad samples of MSM, but the extent to which those samples are comparable with men recruited from venue-based, time-space sampling (VBTS) is unknown. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the comparability of MSM recruited via VBTS and Facebook. Methods: HIV-negative and HIV-positive black and white MSM were recruited from June 2010 to December 2012 using VBTS and Facebook in Atlanta, GA. We compared the self-reported venue attendance, demographic characteristics, sexual and risk behaviors, history of HIV-testing, and HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence between Facebook- and VTBS-recruited MSM overall and by race. Multivariate logistic and negative binomial models estimated age/race adjusted ratios. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to assess 24-month retention. Results: We recruited 803 MSM, of whom 110 (34/110, 30.9% black MSM, 76/110, 69.1% white MSM) were recruited via Facebook and 693 (420/693, 60.6% black MSM, 273/693, 39.4% white MSM) were recruited through VTBS. Facebook recruits had high rates of venue attendance in the previous month (26/34, 77% among black and 71/76, 93% among white MSM; between-race P=.01). MSM recruited on Facebook were generally older, with significant age differences among black MSM (P=.02), but not white MSM (P=.14). … See full text for complete abstract

Copyright © 2006 Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia/SPP. Published by Elsevier España, S.L.Objectives: To determine the possibility of non-invasive estimation of central venous pressure (CVP) through inferior vena cava (IVC) analysis, using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Design: A prospective 3-year study. Setting: A 16-bed medical/surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: Patients admitted to the ICU were enrolled. CVP measurement and TTE (determining cardiac chambers dimension and left ventricular shortening fraction) with IVC analysis (maximum dimension and IVC index) were performed simultaneously. Parametric and non-parametric statistical analysis was performed to establish correlations between variables. Results: 560 patients were admitted to the study, including 477 in whom IVC was analysed, aging 62.2 ± 17.3 years, a mean ICU stay 11.9 ± 18.7 days, a APACHE II score 23.9 ± 8.9 and a SAPS II score 55.7 ± 20.4. Through linear regression analysis CVP was influenced by IVC index (p=0.001), IVC maximum dimension (p=0.013) and presence of mechanical ventilation (p=0.002). A statistically significant correlation was found between the following parameters: an IVC index13mmHg; an IVC index and a CVP 26%-50%; an IVC index >51% and CVP 20mm and a CVP >13mmHg; an IVC maximum dimension 7mmHg was observed, and in patients with chronic respiratory failure (who presented a high prevalence of right ventricular enlargement) a lack of agreement between IVC index >50% and CVP 13mmHg; índice da VCI entre 26 e 50% e PVC entre 8 e 12mmHg; índice da VCI> 51% e PVC> 7mmHg; dimensão máxima da VCI> 20mmHg e PVC> 13 mmHg; dimensão máxima da VCI> 10mm e PVC> 7mmHg.
