The Importance of Positive Factors in Protecting Adverse Mental Health Outcomes and Suicidal Behavior among Citizens of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries
This dissertation is presented in a scientific article format, in which we aimed to assess
the importance of social support, self-esteem and resilience in protecting and
predicting mental health outcomes and suicidal behavior in a sample of 1006 citizens of
the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLC). When it comes to mental
health, traditional research has been revolving around risk factors and their
repercussions on mental health. On the other hand, understanding positive factors
underlies prevention strategies of self-improvement of these skills and social and
clinical interventions necessary to maintain good health and well-being. Social support,
self-esteem and resilience have been the focus of several studies of this scope, having
been associated with better mental health outcomes and lower suicidal behaviors. Our
results showed statistically significant differences between the CPLC countries for
social support, self-esteem, resilience, mental health, and suicidal behavior. The
positive factors were negatively correlated with mental health and suicidal behavior.
When added to sociodemographic variables, social support, self-esteem, and resilience
are good predictors of both mental health and suicidal behavior. We concluded that, as
previously shown in other studies, social support, self-esteem, and resilience all
constitute protective factors for mental health and suicidal behaviors. Self-esteem took
on an especially relevant role, possibly due to its moderating effect in positive life
outcomes, less prevalence of psychological symptomatology and general mental wellbeing, since a strong sense of self-esteem is also linked to better locus of control and
higher personal psychological resources to handle adversity.
a importância do suporte social, autoestima e resiliência enquanto fatores protetores e
a nível mundial (Botega, 2014; World Health Organization [WHO], n.d., 2021a). No
desigualdades estruturais intergeracionais.
positivo nessas populações (Botha & van den Berg, 2016; Dass-Brailsford, 2005;
Theron, 2020).
disponibilidade, acesso e qualidade dos serviços de saúde mental (Blay et al., 2018;
Botega, 2014; Mangolini et al., 2019; Ramos-Oliveira et al., 2017; D. F. Silva & Santana,
No entanto é necessário
The pathogen of tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. One of its main
characteristics is related to the ability of survival within macrophages. Although the drugs
currently available are relatively well tolerated and effective, the development of resistance
and difficulty in reaching the target cells (alveolar macrophages) is increasingly worrying.
The current treatment extends over long periods of time and requires the continuous and
repeated administration of high doses of drugs. Furthermore, the toxic side effects related to
the systemic administration also promote a non-adherence of patients to therapy. It is urgent
to develop new drugs or to develop systems that allow the modified release of same. Lipid
nanoparticles (nsLp) are one of the systems under development with a high potential to
increase and maintain the local concentration of drugs in target tissues, thus reducing its
systemic effects in the blended drugs.
The aim of this work is the development of a lipid-colloidal (nsLp) as a carrier of a protein
(LysB) that has proved being effective in inhibiting the growth of bacterial cultures of
Mycobacterium smegmatis. Thus, testing is carried out in cultures of Mycobacterium
smegmatis and in macrophages infected with the same bacterial agent in order to check
whether the effect of the free protein remained with the application of the nsLp_LysB system.
The results showed that the nsLp_LysB system is equally or more effective than the protein in
its free form for the inhibition of bacterial growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis, which could
be related with the easy cellular internalization of the endocytic particles. Therefore the
nsLp_LysB system is a good carrier of this protein to phagocytic cells.
The use of phagic proteins with lipolitic properties as therapeutic agents of tuberculosis
appears to be an interesting hypothesis. However it is necessary to ensure the targeting of biomolecules to their target organ. The use of nsLp with this therapy appears to be a
technological innovation of success, as these have been described as excellent carriers of
drugs via inhalation for the treatment of lung diseases
The moderating role of strategy and environment on the relationship between corporate liquidity and investment: evidence from panel data
In order to test the moderating role of corporate strategy and industry environment in the effect of liquidity on investment for Portuguese manufacturing firms, we developed a multiple linear regression model for panel data. It is a static model with three types of variables: financial; strategic/environmental; and interactive. The estimated model was validated through the Breusch-Pagan/Cook-Weisberg and Wald Modified tests (heteroscedasticity tests), Lagrange Multiplier (industry random effects test, using the two-digit National Classification of Economic Activities), Hausman robust test (fixed effects model vs. random effects model test) and likelihood-ratio test (joint effect of industry and time test). The statistical processing of the data revealed that a company’s strategy (diversification and innovation) and the industry environment (growth) moderate the effect of liquidity on investment, which can be explained by the effect of these factors on the cost of asymmetric information
Energy and Environmental Impacts of Potential Application of Fully or Partially Electric Propulsion Vehicles: Application to Lisbon and São Miguel, Portugal
AbstractThe transportation sector has been one of the fastest growing sectors resulting in a high final energy consumption in Portugal (40% in 2011), with road transportation sector being responsible for 82% of that energy consumption. As a result, alternative vehicle technologies such as electric vehicles are becoming increasingly important since they may contribute to greater energy efficiency. However, their electric autonomy limitations influence the mobility paradigm, making their acceptance dependent on the location and context of driving. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize mobility patterns and compare the potential application of fully or partially electric propulsion vehicles in two different Portuguese contexts: the Lisbon region (city pattern) and the Island of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal (rural pattern). This characterization was performed by on road monitoring of 9 drivers in Lisbon and 17 drivers in Sao Miguel. São Miguel drivers are those which have a more suitable pattern for using alternative vehicles comparably to the Lisbon region, since they travel about 47% less than the Lisbon population (33 km daily compared to 62 km per day) and, consequently, having a charging time availability about 30% higher. The São Miguel population also has greater presence in lower vehicle specific power (VSP) modes, with an average speed 25% lower than the Lisbon population. São Miguel drivers present greater efficiency in electricity consumption per kilometer (25% more efficient) than the Lisbon sample. Finally, the impacts of using alternative vehicles were quantified, concluding that the alternative technologies would reduce the Well-to-Wheel (WTW) energy consumption per kilometer between 37% and 68%
Evaluation of efficient metabolic engineering strategies for accelerated co-utilisation of lactose by Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Cheese whey is the by-product of cheese production in the dairy industry and its disposal represents an environmental concern. Considering the need to implement circular bioeconomy systems, cheese whey surplus can be reused as a substrate to generate value-added compounds. Due to its high lactose content, whey is successfully integrated in multiwaste biovalorisation approaches, increasing sugar content of lignocellulose substrates[1]. In this context, the ability of cometabolization of glucose and lactose, together with yeast robustness and inhibitor tolerance, will be pivotal to develop and implement such sustainable bioprocesses. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an attractive industrial cell factory reported to produce several chemicals of interest, from biofuels to high-value bioproducts, but it is not able to utilize lactose as carbon source. To surpass this hindrance, strategies like cloning LAC4 (-galactosidase) and LAC12 genes
(lactose permease) from Kluyveromyces sp. have been applied, but complete lactose metabolization by recombinant
strains is known to be an issue[2]. Since then, several different approaches have been studied for an efficient lactose
utilisation, as increasing the copy number of lactose-metabolization genes. However, to ensure genomic stability, it would
be preferable to limit the copy number and regulate differentially the expression of both genes. This work spans the
valorisation of cheese whey effluent using yeasts as metabolic factories. A host able to co-metabolise glucose and
galactose was used, as the choice of the yeast chassis is determinant in metabolic engineering outcomes[3]. Through the
CRISPR/Cas9 system, an industrial S. cerevisiae strain was successfully engineered with the LAC4 and LAC12 genes under
the control of different promoters. The effects of its combination were considered and the better ratio between -
galactosidase and lactose permease was evaluated. Physiological characterization of the strains constructed was
performed and optimal conditions for lactose metabolization were determined. All strains studied were capable of
consuming all lactose in the media, with the top-producing strains achieving yields near the theoretical maximum in both synthetic media and cheese whey fermentations. This study constitutes an important basis for the insertion of other metabolic pathways allowing the production of value-added compounds using cheese whey by-product as substrate and/or co-substrate.This study was developed at CEB – Centre of Biological Engineering and supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) - UID/BIO/04469/2020 unit; PEst UIDB/04469/2020 - Strategic Funding FCT 2020-2023; Ph.D. grant SFRH/BD/130739/2017 to Carlos E. Assessing the economic value of academic libraries: a case study in the University of Lisbon
The assessment of academic libraries is an important management issue of the services and of Library Advocacy. Determining the monetary value of the services may be an interesting element at a time when there are constraints on the budgets of the institutions. The main aim of this paper is to calculate the tangible value in monetary terms of certain services of two libraries of the University of Lisbon. In this task we use six statistical indicators: document loans, accesses to the Internet; accesses to computers, accesses to journals, training, and interlibrary loans. The method to calculate the monetary value for specialized quality service is to verify the current market value of the service, ie., the current price of the service that can be bought or sold in the free market (ISO16439:2014). According to this investigation, we calculate the monetary values for these indicators. The cost-benefit value is also calculated, that is, the return on investment, the relationship between the total economic benefit of these indicators and the total resources invested in the library according to these indicators.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
