Propagation Path Loss Models for 5G Urban Micro- and Macro-Cellular Scenarios
This paper presents and compares two candidate large-scale propagation path
loss models, the alpha-beta-gamma (ABG) model and the close-in (CI) free space
reference distance model, for the design of fifth generation (5G) wireless
communication systems in urban micro- and macro-cellular scenarios. Comparisons
are made using the data obtained from 20 propagation measurement campaigns or
ray-tracing studies from 2 GHz to 73.5 GHz over distances ranging from 5 m to
1429 m. The results show that the one-parameter CI model has a very similar
goodness of fit (i.e., the shadow fading standard deviation) in both
line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight environments, while offering substantial
simplicity and more stable behavior across frequencies and distances, as
compared to the three-parameter ABG model. Additionally, the CI model needs
only one very subtle and simple modification to the existing 3GPP
floating-intercept path loss model (replacing a constant with a close-in free
space reference value) in order to provide greater simulation accuracy, more
simplicity, better repeatability across experiments, and higher stability
across a vast range of frequencies.Comment: in 2016 IEEE 83rd Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2016-Spring),

Genetic variants in transforming growth factor-β gene (TGFB1) affect susceptibility to schizophrenia
Immense body of evidence indicates that dysfunction of immune system is implicated in the etiology of schizophrenia. The immune theory of schizophrenia is supported by alterations in cytokine profile in the brain and peripheral blood. Given the strong genetic background of schizophrenia, it might be assumed that aberrant production of cytokines might be the consequence of genetic factors. This study aimed at investigating the association between schizophrenia susceptibility and selected functional polymorphisms in genes encoding cytokines including: interleukin-2 (IL2 −330T>G, rs2069756), interleukin-6 (IL-6 −174G>C, rs1800795), interferon-γ (IFNG +874T>A, rs2430561) as well as for the first time transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFB1 +869T>C, rs1800470 and +916G>C, rs1800471). We recruited 151 subjects with schizophrenia and 279 controls. There was a significant difference in the genotype distribution and allelic frequency of the TGFB1 +869T>C between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls (p < 0.05). The risk of schizophrenia was more than two-fold higher in carriers of T allele (CT+TT genotypes) than individuals with CC genotype. Given documented gender differences in incidence of schizophrenia, we conducted separate analyses of male and female participants. We have shown that the association was significant in females, while in males it reached a trend toward statistical significance. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report showing the association between TGFB1 +869T>C polymorphism and schizophrenia
Tętniaki mózgu - współczesne metody leczenia wewnątrznaczyniowego
Tętniaki tętnic wewnątrzczaszkowych to najczęstszy rodzaj wad
naczyniowych mózgu. Pęknięcie tętniaka powoduje samoistny
krwotok podpajęczynówkowy. W piśmiennictwie są liczne
publikacje dotyczące patogenezy tętniaków. Przez wiele lat
jedynym sposobem leczenia tętniaków tętnic mózgowych było
postępowanie operacyjne. Jedną z metod leczenia wewnątrznaczyniowego
wykorzystywaną przez radiologów zabiegowych
jest embolizacja za pomocą spiral (terapia wewnątrznaczyniowa).
Wielkim krokiem, który zrewolucjonizował wewnątrznaczyniowe
leczenie tętniaków mózgu, było zastosowanie w styczniu 1991
roku przez Guido Guglielmi spiral odczepialnych. Metoda embolizowania
za pomocą spiral jest wciąż udoskonalana. Prowadzone

The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment: Exploring Fundamental Symmetries of the Universe
The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the
dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for
life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront
of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early
evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The
Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed
plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE
is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity
neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream
of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed
as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research
Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in
Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at
Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino
charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet
cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can
accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional
combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and
potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility
for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around
the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program
of exciting science. In this document we provide a comprehensive overview of
LBNE's scientific objectives, its place in the landscape of neutrino physics
worldwide, the technologies it will incorporate and the capabilities it will
possess.Comment: Major update of previous version. This is the reference document for

A filter-free blood-brain barrier model to quantitatively study transendothelial delivery of nanoparticles by fluorescence spectroscopy
The delivery of therapeutics to the brain is greatly hampered by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The use of nanoparticles that can cross the BBB via the process of receptor-mediated transcytosis at blood-brain barrier endothelial cells seems a promising strategy to transport therapeutics into the brain. To screen for suitable nanocarriers, and to study the process of transcytosis, a cultured polarized monolayer of brain microvascular endothelial cells on an extracellular matrix-coated porous membrane filter is widely used as an in vitro BBB model. However, due to the adhesion of numerous types of nanoparticles to the membrane filter and within the filter pores, such a model is unsuitable for the quantification of transendothelial delivery of nanoparticles. Hence, there is a pressing need for a filter-free in vitro BBB model. Ideally, the model is inexpensive and easy to use, in order to allow for its wide use in nanomedicine and biology laboratories around the world. Here, we developed a filter-free in vitro BBB model that consists of a collagen gel covered with a monolayer of brain microvascular endothelial (hCMEC/D3) cells. The paracellular leakage of differently sized dextrans and the transcellular transport of LDL were measured to demonstrate the validity of the filter-free model. Finally, the transendothelial delivery of fluorescently-labelled PEG-P(CL-g-TMC) polymersomes that were functionalized with GM1-targeting peptides was assessed by fluorescence spectroscopy measurement of the luminal, cellular, and abluminal parts of the filter-free BBB model. Our data confirm the effectiveness of the G23 peptide to mediate transport of polymersomes across the BBB and the suitability of this filter-free in vitro model for quantification of nanoparticle transcytosis
