Monsters don\u27t eat broccoli--a pilot and feasibility study on play and food acceptance in preschoolers
It is common for preschool children to demonstrate neophobia, the fear of trying new foods, which can make them more reluctant to accept fruits and vegetables. As a result, many parents struggle to find adequate solutions to promote healthy eating. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of using pretend play in preschool children to improve food acceptance. Children from the UNF preschool were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: the control group with no pretend play (n= 15), and the experimental group with pretend play (n=12). Each group first participated in a play session where they were exposed to their assigned conditions. Children were then offered broccoli. Their acceptance of the broccoli was evaluated by the amount eaten (by weight), behavior coding, and self-report. Preliminary results will be presented, and the feasibility of this work will be discussed. Data from this pilot study will be used to refine the pretend play manipulations and to design larger-scale studies. The goal of this line of research is to help parents establish healthy eating habits with their children through positive experiences in accepting new foods
Chiral probe development for circularly polarised luminescence: comparative study of structural factors determining the degree of induced CPL with four heptacoordinate europium(III) complexes
A series of bright, europium(III) complexes has been prepared based on an achiral heptadentate triazacyclononane ligand bearing two strongly absorbing, coordinated aralkynyl pyridyl moieties. The binding of chiral carboxylates, including α-hydroxy acids such as lactate and mandelate, has been monitored by emission spectroscopy and is signalled by the switching on of strong circularly polarised emission. In each case, an R-chiral carboxylate gave rise to emission typical of a Δ complex, most clearly shown in the form of the ΔJ = 4 transition manifold around 700 nm. Variations in the sign and magnitude of the CPL allow the enantiomeric purity and absolute configuration of the acid to be assessed in a sample. Analysis of the relative energies of the parent aqua complexes and their stereoisomeric adducts has been aided by lifetime measurements and density functional theory calculations
Condensate cosmology -- dark energy from dark matter
Imagine a scenario in which the dark energy forms via the condensation of
dark matter at some low redshift. The Compton wavelength therefore changes from
small to very large at the transition, unlike quintessence or metamorphosis. We
study CMB, large scale structure, supernova and radio galaxy constraints on
condensation by performing a 4 parameter likelihood analysis over the Hubble
constant and the three parameters associated with Q, the condensate field:
Omega_Q, w_f and z_t (energy density and equation of state today, and redshift
of transition). Condensation roughly interpolates between Lambda CDM (for large
z_t) and sCDM (low z_t) and provides a slightly better fit to the data than
Lambda CDM. We confirm that there is no degeneracy in the CMB between H and z_t
and discuss the implications of late-time transitions for the Lyman-alpha
forest. Finally we discuss the nonlinear phase of both condensation and
metamorphosis, which is much more interesting than in standard quintessence

An integrated model for predicting KRAS dependency
The clinical approvals of KRAS G12C inhibitors have been a revolutionary advance in precision oncology, but response rates are often modest. To improve patient selection, we developed an integrated model to predict KRAS dependency. By integrating molecular profiles of a large panel of cell lines from the DEMETER2 dataset, we built a binary classifier to predict a tumor's KRAS dependency. Monte Carlo cross validation via ElasticNet within the training set was used to compare model performance and to tune parameters α and λ. The final model was then applied to the validation set. We validated the model with genetic depletion assays and an external dataset of lung cancer cells treated with a G12C inhibitor. We then applied the model to several Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets. The final "K20" model contains 20 features, including expression of 19 genes and KRAS mutation status. In the validation cohort, K20 had an AUC of 0.94 and accurately predicted KRAS dependency in both mutant and KRAS wild-type cell lines following genetic depletion. It was also highly predictive across an external dataset of lung cancer lines treated with KRAS G12C inhibition. When applied to TCGA datasets, specific subpopulations such as the invasive subtype in colorectal cancer and copy number high pancreatic adenocarcinoma were predicted to have higher KRAS dependency. The K20 model has simple yet robust predictive capabilities that may provide a useful tool to select patients with KRAS mutant tumors that are most likely to respond to direct KRAS inhibitors
Explicit asymptotic modelling of transient Love waves propagated along a thin coating
The official published version can be obtained from the link below.An explicit asymptotic model for transient Love waves is derived from the exact equations of anti-plane elasticity. The perturbation procedure relies upon the slow decay of low-frequency Love waves to approximate the displacement field in the substrate by a power series in the depth coordinate. When appropriate decay conditions are imposed on the series, one obtains a model equation governing the displacement at the interface between the coating and the substrate. Unusually, the model equation contains a term with a pseudo-differential operator. This result is confirmed and interpreted by analysing the exact solution obtained by integral transforms. Genetic determinants of cellular addiction to DNA polymerase theta
Polymerase theta (Pol θ, gene name Polq) is a widely conserved DNA polymerase that mediates a microhomology-mediated, error-prone, double strand break (DSB) repair pathway, referred to as Theta Mediated End Joining (TMEJ). Cells with homologous recombination deficiency are reliant on TMEJ for DSB repair. It is unknown whether deficiencies in other components of the DNA damage response (DDR) also result in Pol θ addiction. Here we use a CRISPR genetic screen to uncover 140 Polq synthetic lethal (PolqSL) genes, the majority of which were previously unknown. Functional analyses indicate that Pol θ/TMEJ addiction is associated with increased levels of replication-associated DSBs, regardless of the initial source of damage. We further demonstrate that approximately 30% of TCGA breast cancers have genetic alterations in PolqSL genes and exhibit genomic scars of Pol θ/TMEJ hyperactivity, thereby substantially expanding the subset of human cancers for which Pol θ inhibition represents a promising therapeutic strategy
Coulomb displacement energy and the low-energy astrophysical S factor for the Be7(p,gamma)B8 reaction
The relationship between the Coulomb displacement energy for the A=8, J=2+,
T=1 state and the low-energy astrophysical S factor for the Be7(p,gamma)B8
reaction is discussed. The displacement energy is interpreted in a
particle-hole model. The dependence of the particle displacement energy on the
potential well geometry is investigated and is used to relate the particle
displacement energy to the rms radius and the asymptotic normalization of the
valence proton wave function in B8. The asymptotic normalization is used to
calculate the astrophysical S factor for the Be7(p,gamma)B8 reaction. The
relationship to the Li7(n,gamma) reaction, the B8 quadrupole moment, radial

Dynamics of trapped bright solitons in the presence of localized inhomogeneities
We examine the dynamics of a bright solitary wave in the presence of a
repulsive or attractive localized ``impurity'' in Bose-Einstein condensates
(BECs). We study the generation and stability of a pair of steady states in the
vicinity of the impurity as the impurity strength is varied. These two new
steady states, one stable and one unstable, disappear through a saddle-node
bifurcation as the strength of the impurity is decreased. The dynamics of the
soliton is also examined in all the cases (including cases where the soliton is
offset from one of the relevant fixed points). The numerical results are
corroborated by theoretical calculations which are in very good agreement with

Surface and electronic structure of MOCVD-grown Ga(0.92)In(0.08)N investigated by UV and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies
The surface and electronic structure of MOCVD-grown layers of
Ga(0.92)In(0.08)N have been investigated by means of photoemission. An
additional feature at the valence band edge, which can be ascribed to the
presence of In in the layer, has been revealed. A clean (0001)-(1x1) surface
was prepared by argon ion sputtering and annealing. Stability of chemical
composition of the investigated surface subjected to similar ion etching was
proven by means of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
The European Union, borders and conflict transformation: the case of Cyprus
Much of the existing literature on the European Union (EU), conflict transformation and border dynamics has been premised on the assumption that the nature of the border determines EU intervention and the consequences that flow from this in terms of EU impact. The article aims to transcend this literature through assessing how domestic interpretations influence EU border transformation in conflict situations, taking Cyprus as a case study. Moreover, the objective is to fuse the literature on EU bordering impact and perceptions of the EU’s normative projection in conflict resolution. Pursuing this line of inquiry is an attempt to depart from the notion of borders being constructed solely by unidirectional EU logics of engagement or bordering practices to a conceptualization of the border as co-constituted space, where the interpretations of the EU’s normative projections by conflict parties, and the strategies that they pursue, can determine the relative openness of the EU border
