    R&D results on a CsI-TTGEM based photodetector

    The very high momentum particle identification detector proposed for the ALICE upgrade is a focusing RICH using a C4F10 gaseous radiator. For the detection of Cherenkov photons, one of the options currently under investigation is to use a CsI coated Triple-Thick-GEM (CsI-TTGEM) with metallic or resistive electrodes. We will present results from the laboratory studies as well as preliminary results of beam tests of a RICH detector prototype consisting of a CaF2 radiator coupled to a 10x10 cm2 CsI-TTGEM equipped with a pad readout and GASSIPLEX-based front-end electronics. With such a prototype the detection of Cherenkov photons simultaneously with minimum ionizing particles has been achieved for the first time in a stable operation mode

    Negative refractivity assisted optical power limiting

    We propose an approach for achieving optical power limiting (OPL) using planar multilayered media. The approach involves the use of multiple bilayer structures that consist of a negative index (NIM) layer followed by a nonlinear two-photon absorbing (TPA) layer. The NIM layers refocus light in the TPA layers to increase intensity and nonlinear absorption. We perform parametric two-dimensional finite difference time domain simulations and compute the power transmittance of the media as a function of the incident light intensity, the number of layers, the layer thickness, and the material properties. Our analysis demonstrates proof-of-concept and indicates that the TPA-based OPL can be enhanced and optimized using NIM focusing.This work was in part supported by a grant from the office of Vice-President for Research at the University at Buffalo and in part by the Chemistry and Life Sciences Directorate of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research

    CFD Modelling of Hydrodynamics and Heat Transfer in Channels of a PHE

    Plate Heat Exchangers (PHEs) are one of the most efficient types of contemporary heat exchangers with intensified heat transfer. They are commonly used in process industries due to their compactness, lower weight and cost, smaller space for installation and servicing compared to conventional shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Heat transfer in PHEs takes place in channels of complex geometry formed by corrugated plates placed abutting. The flow in such channels can be very complicated due to breakup and reattachment of the boundary layer, secondary flows and the small hydraulic diameter of the flow passages. The aim of this work is to compare a well-established and validated CFD code both with results obtained from an experimental PHE model using a corrugated plate commonly used in industrial applications and with existing correlations. The results show that CFD simulation can predict heat transfer rate and fluid flow behaviour in a range of Re numbers (8,900 to 27,650), with discrepancies up to 1 % and 6 % in terms of outlet temperature and pressure drop respectively. Modelling of the flow inside a single corrugation also allows for computation of the wall shear stress distribution which can be very useful in PHE applications where fouling is of particular importance

    Non-Biodegradable substances produce the greenhouse gasses, methane and carbon dioxide. Growing plants and trees on top of a landfill, a process known as ‘Phyto capping\u27, could reduce the production and release of these gasses. In certain parts of the world, it remains the most economical and simplest method of waste disposal. Biodegradation of organic matter in a landfill site occurs most rapidly when water comes into contact with the buried waste. An important step in the drive is to remove environmentally harmful materials from waste streams and drinking water. A synthetic clay known as swelling mica has the ability to separate ions of radium, a radioactive metal, from the water. The finding could have implications for radioactive and hazardous waste disposal, particularly in the cleanup of mill tailings left over from the processing of uranium for the nation\u27s nuclear industry.     In India, the status of the girl child has been a subject of much discussion, contro­versy, and debate. From the start, girl children are seen as burdens rather than blessings, bearers of exorbitant dowries, who will eventually move into the homes of their husbands. There are some overwhelming cultural and economic reasons why female children are not receiving the same medical, emotional, and educational attention as their male counterparts. The result is a low literacy rate among women in rural areas. There has been an increasing proportion of women, who are literate in just 20 years. Despite the improvements, there continues to be a large gap between the educational levels of men and women in rural India. The present study is focused on status, causes, and recommendations for rural women education

    Survey on Electrical Activity in Earth’s Atmosphere

    Lightning discharge is a spectacular, luminous and one of the most dangerous short lived phenomenon which occurs in the Earth’s atmosphere ranging from troposphere to the lower ionosphere. Lightning in troposphere is mainly classified as cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning, intra-cloud lightning and inter-cloud lightning discharges. It is assumed that these discharges are caused by the electrically charged thunderclouds. CG lightning has been studied more and is further categorized as positive CG and negative CG lightning. Positive CG lightning is more powerful and accounts only (5-10) percent of the total global lightning and may carry a peak current of >300 kA. An entire family of other electrical discharges also has been reported by the scientific community. They are called “Transient’s Luminous Events (TLE’s)”. TLEs occur from top of the thunderclouds up to the lower ionospheric altitudes. Their first visual evidence was documented in 1989. TLE’s are included as blue starters, blue jets, gigantic jets, red sprites, halos, and elves. They are named according to their optical properties, terminal altitudes and different shapes. It has been observed that TLE’s are associated with underlying thunderstorm activity and strong CG lightning. The exact physical mechanism of lightning and TLE’s and their association with the underlying thunderstorms is still unknown and the research is going on. In this paper, we will study the possible mechanisms of these electrical discharges, their inter-connection and impacts on the atmosphere. This papers is aimed at the readers generally are unfamiliar with the lightning characteristics. We hope that this article will increase the interest among the researchers
