    Vectorizing Higher-Order Masking

    International audienceThe cost of higher-order masking as a countermeasure against side-channel attacks is often considered too high for practical scenarios, as protected implementations become very slow. At Eurocrypt 2017, the bounded moment leakage model was proposed to study the (theoretical) security of parallel implementations of masking schemes [5]. Work at CHES 2017 then brought this to practice by considering an implementation of AES with 32 shares [26], bitsliced inside 32-bit registers of ARM Cortex-M processors. In this paper we show how the NEON vector instructions of larger ARM Cortex-A processors can be exploited to build much faster masked implementations of AES. Specifically, we present AES with 4 and 8 shares, which in theory provide security against 3rd and 7th-order attacks, respectively. The software is publicly available and optimized for the ARM Cortex-A8. We use refreshing and multiplication algorithms that are proven to be secure in the bounded moment leakage model and to be strongly non-interfering. Additionally, we perform a concrete side-channel evaluation on a BeagleBone Black, using a combination of test vector leakage assessment (TVLA), leakage certification tools and information-theoretic bounds

    AbstractSquamous cell carcinoma of the lung is remarkable for the extent to which the same chromosomal abnormalities are detected in individual tumours. We have used next generation sequencing at low coverage to produce high resolution copy number karyograms of a series of 89 non-small cell lung tumours specifically of the squamous cell subtype. Because this methodology is able to create karyograms from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded material, we were able to use archival stored samples for which survival data were available and correlate frequently occurring copy number changes with disease outcome. No single region of genomic change showed significant correlation with survival. However, adopting a whole-genome approach, we devised an algorithm that relates to total genomic damage, specifically the relative ratios of copy number states across the genome. This algorithm generated a novel index, which is an independent prognostic indicator in early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the lung

    Laryngeal Paraganglioma with Chronic Cough: A Case Report

    Laryngeal paragangliomas are rare lesions originating from paraganglion cells within the supraglottis or subglottis. As per the latest review, only 76 such cases have been reported in the literature. Symptoms typically include dysphonia or dysphagia. We present, to the best of our knowledge, the first known case of laryngeal paraganglioma with chronic cough as the primary complaint. A 77-year-old male presented with chronic cough. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a supraglottic submucosal mass emanating from the region of the right false vocal cord and aryepiglottic fold. Postcontrast computed tomography scan showed a well-defined intensely enhancing mass arising from the right paraglottic space and bulging into the right pyriform sinus. Biopsies and immunohistochemical markers supported the diagnosis of paraganglioma. A complete submucosal excision of the mass via a right transcervical approach with tracheostomy was performed. Postoperatively, the patient’s cough resolved. Laryngeal paragangliomas are rare tumors that are known to present with dysphonia or dysphagia. This is the first case report of a patient presenting with chronic cough as the primary complaint

    Video-assisted mediastinoscopy (VAM) for surgical resection of ectopic parathyroid adenoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenomas or hyperplasia account for up to 25% of primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). Two percent of them are not accessible by standard cervical surgical approaches. Surgical resection has traditionally been performed via median sternotomy or thoracotomy and more recently, via video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). We present our experience with the novel use of Video-Assisted Mediastinoscopy (VAM) for resection of ectopic mediastinal parathyroid glands.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>4 patients underwent VAM for removal of an ectopic intramediastinal parathyroid gland. All of them had at least one previous unsuccessful neck exploration.</p> <p>In all cases histology confirmed complete resection of ectopic parathyroid glands (3 parathyroid adenomas and one parathyroid hyperplasia). Two of the patients required a partial sternal split to facilitate exploration.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The cervical approach for resection of ectopic parathyroid adenomas is frequently unsuccessful. Previously, the standard surgical approach in such cases was sternotomy and exploration of the mediastinum. Recently, a number of less invasive modalities have been introduced.</p> <p>We found that VAM has several advantages. It has a short theatre time does not require a complex anaesthetic and is performed with the patient in classic supine position utilising often a previous cervical scar with good cosmetic results. It offers a short hospital stay; it is cost effective with minimal use of fancy and pricy consumables with a comfortable incision and no violation of the pleural space.</p> <p>Additionally the use of digital Video imaging has increased the sensitivity of the mediastinoscopy and has added safety and confidence in performing a detailed mediastinal exploration with an additional great training value as well.</p

    Observing mineral dust in northern Africa, the middle east and Europe: current capabilities and challenges ahead for the development of dust services

    Mineral dust produced by wind erosion of arid and semi-arid surfaces is a major component of atmospheric aerosol that affects climate, weather, ecosystems, and socio-economic sectors such as human health, transportation, solar energy, and air quality. Understanding these effects and ultimately improving the resilience of affected countries requires a reliable, dense, and diverse set of dust observations, fundamental for the development and the provision of skillful dust forecasts tailored products. The last decade has seen a notable improvement of dust observational capabilities in terms of considered parameters, geographical coverage, and delivery times, as well as of tailored products of interest to both the scientific community and the various end-users. Given this progress, here we review the current state of observational capabilities including in-situ, ground-based and satellite remote sensing observations, in Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe for the provision of dust information considering the needs of various users. We also critically discuss observational gaps and related unresolved questions while providing suggestions for overcoming the current limitations. Our review aims to be a milestone for discussing dust observational gaps at a global level to address the needs of users, from research communities to nonscientific stakeholders

    The CCAAT-binding complex coordinates the oxidative stress response in eukaryotes

    The heterotrimeric CCAAT-binding complex is evolutionary conserved in eukaryotic organisms. The corresponding Aspergillus nidulans CCAAT- binding factor (AnCF) consists of the subunits HapB, HapC and HapE. All of the three subunits are necessary for DNA binding. Here, we demonstrate that AnCF senses the redox status of the cell via oxidative modification of thiol groups within the histone fold motif of HapC. Mutational and in vitro interaction analyses revealed that two of these cysteine residues are indispensable for stable HapC/HapE subcomplex formation and high-affinity DNA binding of AnCF. Oxidized HapC is unable to participate in AnCF assembly and localizes in the cytoplasm, but can be recycled by the thioredoxin system in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, deletion of the hapC gene led to an impaired oxidative stress response. Therefore, the central transcription factor AnCF is regulated at the post-transcriptional level by the redox status of the cell serving for a coordinated activation and deactivation of antioxidative defense mechanisms including the specific transcriptional activator NapA, production of enzymes such as catalase, thioredoxin or peroxiredoxin, and maintenance of a distinct glutathione homeostasis. The underlying fine-tuned mechanism very likely represents a general feature of the CCAAT-binding complexes in eukaryotes
