    Event structures for Petri nets with persistence

    Event structures are a well-accepted model of concurrency. In a seminal paper by Nielsen, Plotkin and Winskel, they are used to establish a bridge between the theory of domains and the approach to concurrency proposed by Petri. A basic role is played by an unfolding construction that maps (safe) Petri nets into a subclass of event structures, called prime event structures, where each event has a uniquely determined set of causes. Prime event structures, in turn, can be identified with their domain of configurations. At a categorical level, this is nicely formalised by Winskel as a chain of coreflections. Contrary to prime event structures, general event structures allow for the presence of disjunctive causes, i.e., events can be enabled by distinct minimal sets of events. In this paper, we extend the connection between Petri nets and event structures in order to include disjunctive causes. In particular, we show that, at the level of nets, disjunctive causes are well accounted for by persistent places. These are places where tokens, once generated, can be used several times without being consumed and where multiple tokens are interpreted collectively, i.e., their histories are inessential. Generalising the work on ordinary nets, Petri nets with persistence are related to a new subclass of general event structures, called locally connected, by means of a chain of coreflections relying on an unfolding construction

    This paper introduces techniques for partial discharge, PD, recognition under DC, both in steady state and in transient condition, during which the field in insulation varies slowly from a permittivity-driven to a conductivity-driven profile. This transient can be significantly long, depending on insulating material characteristics, and condition PD phenomenology and impact of PD on insulation life. Focusing mainly on the behavior of PD repetition rate as a function of time, after insulation energization by a DC voltage step, PD triggered by transient field can be separated from those relevant to steady state, which may indicate a criterion to estimate the partial discharge inception voltage, PDIV, under DC supply

    Investigating Energization Transients and the Potentiality of Partial Discharge Inception and Damage in Nanofilled Polypropylene Insulation for DC Cables and Capacitors

    New nanostructured insulating materials are investigated, within the European project GRIDABLE, to be used for DC cable and capacitors. Besides electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, and life behavior, work is being done to evaluate their capability to endure highly stressing conditions as those cause by the inception of partial discharges, PD. This paper, in particular, analyzes what happens during energization of a DC cable or capacitors, when voltage goes from zero to the nominal value in a few seconds, while the internal electrical field takes longer time to reach the DC steady state configuration. During an energization transient, indeed, electrical field in insulation, and insulation defects (as cavities), is driven by permittivity, not conductivity as in steady state. Hence, PD might occur with high repetition rate, which would not occur, or at much lower repetition rate, in steady state. The way to evaluate the time constant of the transient, that is, through charging current measurement, is described and successfully fitted to the results of PD measurements performed on two types of polypropylene, PP: neat and nanostructured, and a cross-linked polyethylene, XLPE, having significantly different electrical characteristics

    Numerical determination of the exponents controlling the relationship between time, length and temperature in glass-forming liquids

    There is a certain consensus that the very fast growth of the relaxation time τ\tau occurring in glass-forming liquids on lowering the temperature must be due to the thermally activated rearrangement of correlated regions of growing size. Even though measuring the size of these regions has defied scientists for a while, there is indeed recent evidence of a growing correlation length ξ\xi in glass-formers. If we use Arrhenius law and make the mild assumption that the free-energy barrier to rearrangement scales as some power ψ\psi of the size of the correlated regions, we obtain a relationship between time and length, TlogτξψT\log\tau \sim \xi^\psi. According to both the Adam-Gibbs and the Random First Order theory the correlation length grows as ξ(TTk)1/(dθ)\xi \sim (T-T_k)^{-1/(d-\theta)}, even though the two theories disagree on the value of θ\theta. Therefore, the super-Arrhenius growth of the relaxation time with the temperature is regulated by the two exponents ψ\psi and θ\theta through the relationship Tlogτ(TTk)ψ/(dθ)T\log\tau \sim (T-T_k)^{-\psi/(d-\theta)}. Despite a few theoretical speculations, up to now there has been no experimental determination of these two exponents. Here we measure them numerically in a model glass-former, finding ψ=1\psi=1 and θ=2\theta=2. Surprisingly, even though the values we found disagree with most previous theoretical suggestions, they give back the well-known VFT law for the relaxation time, Tlogτ(TTk)1T\log\tau \sim (T-T_k)^{-1}.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    The static evolution of the new Italian code of medical ethics

    Eight years since the last revision, in May 2014 the Italian code of medical ethics has been updated. Here, the Authors examine the reform in the light of the increasing difficulties of the medical profession arising from the severity of the Italian law Courts. The most significant aspects of this new code are firstly, the patient's freedom of self-determination and secondly, risk prevention through the disclosure of errors and adverse events. However, in both areas the reform seems to be less effective if we compare the ethical codes of France, the United Kingdom and the United States. In particular, the non-taking into consideration of the said code quality standards and scientific evidence which should guide doctors in their clinical practice is to say the least questionable. Since these are the most significant changes in the new code, it seems inevitable to conclude that the 2014 edition is essentially in line with previous versions. Now more than ever it is necessary that medical ethics acknowledges that medicine, society and medical jurisprudence have changed and doctors must be given new rules in order to protect both patients' rights and dignity of the profession. The physician's right to refuse to perform treatment at odds with his own clinical beliefs cannot be the only mean to safeguard the dignity of the profession. A clear boundary must also be established between medicine and professionalism as well as the criteria in determining the scientific evidences that physicians must follow. This has not been done in the Italian code of ethics, despite all the controversy caused by the Stamina case

    Part II Farmers’ Experiences of the Farm Assessment: Interviews with Farmers

    The objective of work package 463 was to test the implementation of the WQ assessment Scheme on regular broiler farms. We assessed the perception and attitudes of farmers towards animal welfare and on-farm assessment, the experience and evaluation of the assessment itself and the relevance and applicability of the results. at the same time animal scientists assessed the welfare of the animals by WQ monitoring instruments. In addition they scored foot pad lesions at the slaughterhouse by way of video imaging. Both studies proceeded in parallel; farmers told, hence, about their real-life experience. It is to be noted that the WQ monitoring instruments were not at their final state, and experiences and comments of the farmers are to be interpreted as reflection and discussion on work in progress. A team of sociologists carried out the study on farmers’ experiences, perception and attitude whereas the assessment of animal welfare was done by animal scientists. the study took place in three countries – Netherlands, Italy and the UK. We choose to focus on broilers for two main reasons. First of all the production cycle of broilers is relatively short and so it is possible to assess the welfare of different flocks within a short time-span and to check more easily any improvement of animal welfare as a result of farmers’ interventions. a second reason for focusing on broilers is that it allows us to link this project to another project where a new way of checking for foot-pad lesions is developed. this is, moreover, a relatively easy manner of checking animal welfare that allows us to lower the burden of three on-farm assessments considerably. In the following we report on the results of the welfare assessment (Part I) and the interviews with farmers about their perception and experience of animal welfare and the welfare assessment (Part II). In both parts we compare the results across the participating countries (Netherlands, Italy and United Kingdom). More in detail information on the national results of welfare assessment and interviews with farmers can be found in the deliverables 4.31.a (farmers’ interviews) and D4.31b (assessment results). as appendixes, we provide the technical and sociological questionnaires and the assessment reports that were sent to the farmers in the different countries.     Is HERV-K and HERV-W Expression Regulated by miR-155 in Kidney Transplant Patients with Human Cytomegalovirus Infection?

    According to the latest update, 2,578 unique mature micro­RNAs (miRNAs) are currently annotated in the human genome and participate in the regulation of multiple events, such as cellular proliferation or apoptosis. A previous study analyzing global miRNA expression patterns in GH cells (high human endogenous retrovirus, HERV, K vs. low) showed that 2 miRNAs (miR-663 and miR-638) are differentially regulated and exhibit expression parallel to that of HERV-K. The aim of this study was to evaluate HERV-K and -W pol gene and miR-155 expression in kidney transplant recipients and the possible relationship between them. The comparison between kidney transplant patients negative for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection and positive patients showed a significant difference in terms of miR-155 expression (p = 0.0111). We demonstrated that HERV-K and -W pol gene expression was significantly higher in CMV-infected kidney transplant recipients versus those not infected as previously reported by our groups. Our correlation data suggest that miR-155 are not directly involved in regulating the HERV notwithstanding that we together observed increased expression of HERV-K and -W and diminished expression of miR-155 in HCMV-infected human kidney transplant recipients

    Nanocomposite Polypropylene For DC Cables And Capacitors: A New European Project

    This paper presents the scientific background of a new European project, GRIDABLE, which was launched at the beginning of 2017 and has to deliver results in manufacturing and characterization of LV-MV capacitors and MV-HV cables for DC application. The innovation is in the development of nanostructured materials based on polypropylene and silica, and the relevant capacitor and cable manufacturing procedures. The initial results regarding the electrical properties of PP-SiO2 materials, which have brought to the proposal of this project, are presented in this paper, focusing on breakdown strength and space charge measurements performed on nanofilled PP films for capacitors

    Crowdsourced Reconstruction of Cellular Networks to Serve Outdoor Positioning: Modeling, Validation and Analysis

    Positioning via outdoor fingerprinting, which exploits the radio signals emitted by cellular towers, is fundamental in many applications. In most cases, the localization performance is affected by the availability of information about the emitters, such as their coverage. While several projects aim at collecting cellular network data via crowdsourcing observations, none focuses on information about the structure of the networks, which is paramount to correctly model their topology. The difficulty of such a modeling is exacerbated by the inherent differences among cellular technologies, the strong spatio-temporal nature of positioning, and the continuously evolving configuration of the networks. In this paper, we first show how to synthesize a detailed conceptual schema of cellular networks on the basis of the signal fingerprints collected by devices. We turned it into a logical one, and we exploited that to build a relational spatio-temporal database capable of supporting a crowdsourced collection of data. Next, we populated the database with heterogeneous cellular observations originating from multiple sources. In addition, we illustrate how the developed system allows us to properly deal with the evolution of the network configuration, e.g., by detecting cell renaming phenomena and by making it possible to correct inconsistent measurements coming from mobile devices, fostering positioning tasks. Finally, we provide a wide range of basic, spatial, and temporal analyses about the arrangement of the cellular network and its evolution over time, demonstrating how the developed system can be used to reconstruct and maintain a deep knowledge of the cellular network, possibly starting from crowdsourced information only
