The cognitive shift in terminology and specialized translation

This article offers a critical analysis and overview of terminology theories with special reference to scientific and technical translation. The study of specialized language is undergoing a cognitive shift, which is conducive to a greater emphasis on meaning as well as conceptual structures underlying texts and language in general. Terminology theory seems to be evolving from prescriptive to descriptive with a growing focus on the study of specialized language units from a social, linguistic and cognitive perspective. In consonance with this, new voices are beginning to be heard, which offer different and complementary perspectives on specialized language and translation.Este artículo propone un análisis crítico y una visión global de las teorías terminológicas con especial atención a la traducción científica y técnica. El estudio de los tecnolectos está sometido en la actualidad a un cambio hacia el cognitivismo, que a su vez conduce a un énfasis mucho mayor tanto en el significado como en las estructuras conceptuales que subyacen en los textos y en la lengua en general. La terminología parece estar pasando del prescriptivismo al descriptivismo, con un interés creciente por enfocar el estudio de las unidades de los tecnolectos desde una perspectiva social, lingüística y cognitiva. En esta misma línea, comienzan a oírse nuevas voces que ofrecen perspectivas diferentes y complementarias en torno a los tecnolectos y la traducción

Framing Terminology: A Process-Oriented Approach

The frame notion used in Frame Semantics can be traced to case frames, which were said to characterize a small abstract situation in such a way that if one wished to understand the semantic structure of a verb it was necessary to understand the properties of the entire scene that it activated. A frame has been more broadly defined as any system of concepts related in such a way that one concept evokes the entire system. In this sense, it bears an obvious affinity with terminology, which is also based on such conceptual organization. However, despite the fact that Frame Semantics has been usefully applied to lexicology and syntax, so far it has not been systematically applied to terminology.This paper argues for a frame-based organization of specialized fields in which a dynamic process-oriented frame provides the conceptual underpinnings for the location of sub-hierarchies of concepts within a specialized domain event, and the elaboration of a definition template, thus opening the door to a more adequate representation of specialized fields as well as supplying a better way of linking terms to concepts. The domain of coastal engineering is used as an example because the entities in play take part in processes that are difficult to describe only by means of conceptual trees. Through the use of corpus data we demonstrate how it is possible to represent such an event and create a dynamic frame which enriches and enhances the understanding of specialized field concepts.La notion de schéma utilisée dans la Sémantique des schémas est dérivée des grammaires des cas, qui étaient censées caractériser une petite situation abstraite de telle sorte que, si on souhaitait comprendre la structure sémantique d’un verbe, il était nécessaire de comprendre les propriétés de la scène entière qu’il activait. Un schéma a été défini plus amplement comme tout système de concepts mis en rapport de telle sorte qu’un concept évoque le système entier. Dans ce sens, il a une affinité évidente avec la terminologie, qui est également basée sur cette organisation conceptuelle. Néanmoins, bien que la Sémantique des schémas ait été appliquée à la lexicologie et à la syntaxe, jusqu’ici elle n’a pas été systématiquement appliquée à la terminologie.Ce document présente des arguments en faveur d’une organisation de domaines spécialisés s’appuyant sur des schémas, où un schéma dynamique et orienté sur les processus fournit le soutien conceptuel pour la localisation de sous-hiérarchies de concepts dans un événement de domaine spécialisé; l’élaboration d’un modèle de définition, permettant une représentation plus appropriée des domaines spécialisés et fournissant une meilleure façon de lier les termes avec les concepts. Le domaine de l’ingénierie côtière est utilisé comme exemple parce que les entités en jeu participent dans des processus qui sont difficiles à décrire au seul moyen des arbres conceptuels. Par l’utilisation des données de corpus nous démontrons comment il est possible de représenter cet événement et de créer un cadre dynamique qui enrichit et améliore le sens de la compréhension des concepts des domaines spécialisés

Methodology for knowledge structuring in a discipline: the PuertoTerm case

The PuertoTerm research project reports the steps taken to formalize and structure the knowledge developed within the field of coastal and ports engineering. The process used to obtain the associated terminology is described and the way in which the terminology was structured and processed is analysed. Finally, development and implementation are described, with special attention to the design of a two-dimensional information visualization interface

The pragmatics of specialized communication

This paper aims to emphasize the importance of pragmatics in connection with specialized communication. The structure, content, and terminology of specialized texts are constrained by factors such as the communicative situation itself and the previous knowledge, intentions, expectations, and beliefs of the text sender. The transmission of such meaning is problematic even in one language. When it is a question of two languages, as is the case in any act of translation, the difficulties are multiplied. For this reason, it is imperative for translators to be aware of how pragmatics, perhaps more than any other part of language, can dramatically affect their professional activity.El presente artículo pretende poner de manifiesto la importancia de la pragmática en relación con la comunicación especializada. La estructura, el contenido y la terminología de los textos especializados se ven afectados por factores como la propia situación comunicativa y el conocimiento, intenciones, expectativas y creencias previos del emisor del texto. La transmisión de tal significado es difícil incluso en una sola lengua. Cuando la transmisión se produce entre dos lenguas, como es el caso de cualquier acto de traducción, las dificultades se multiplican. Por esta razón, es fundamental que los traductores sean conscientes de cómo la pragmática, más que ningún otro componente del lenguaje, puede afectar de forma decisiva a su actividad profesional

The paradigmatic and syntagmatic structure of the lexical field of feeling

En este artículo se analiza la estructura interna del dominio léxico de SENTIMIENTO, en cuanto a la interfaz entre su jerarquía semántica y los patrones de complementación de sus miembros. De esta manera, puede decirse que semántica y sintaxis convergen en una representación del conocimiento. Se utiliza la naturaleza jerárquica de esquemas cognitivos a nivel de dimensión para mostrar cómo la gradación implícita en ellos refleja niveles de prominencia conceptual.
